Hi! So, Wellington was really nice, and I had lots of fun. I started off staying with the Scotts, old family friends, just outside of the city in Churton Park. I spent lots of time crawling around the city, exploring all the cool stuff that Wellington has to offer. I'd go in in the morning when Gemma and her mom would go in for work, and have a coffee and start my day. My first Monday in the city, I met up with a couple of girls that I'd met in Napier, and who were also in the city to go to the zoo. Wellington zoo is a really hilly, confusing place. We spent most of the day trying to figure out the map, and walking up and down hills that we'd already walked up and ... read more
So I really haven't blogged in forever. I guess i've been having too much fun to sit down and write it all down. So i'll try to get everything in now. Arriving in New Zealand was great. I stayed with my friend Sarv who was also another volunteer in the Philippines while I was there. She and her family were absolutely wonderful. I had the best tour guide I could have hoped for. We went to tons of beaches all around Auckland, both north and south of the city. We went to a place called Goat Island marine reserve, but the waves were massive, and I was too chicken to go snorkeling, so I didn't get to see any cool stuff that day. I think I made the right choice though, because Sarv's friend who came ... read more
So since I last blogged, i've had a pretty eventful week. New Years Eve on Koh Phangan was really sweet, altho i wasn't feeling well, so i only lasted until about 1:30 before i headed home for the evening. The next day we all just hung out and relaxed, the weather wasn't very good, so there wasn't much opportunity for beaching. On the 2nd, I said goodbye to Shannon and Jaclyn as they headed off to malaysia, and also to Jen, Court, and Holly as i was heading up to Bangkok to meet my friend Kelsy. There were THOUSANDS of people on Koh Phangan for new years, and so naturally everyone wanted off the island at the same time, so i was very lucky to get a booking for the 2nd. I got to the pier ... read more
Happy New Years Eve!!! I'm approaching two weeks in thailand and it feels like it's been 2 days. The time here is really flying by, but i am having so much fun, that's probably why. After we left Koh Samui, Jac, shannon and I went to Koh Phi Phi on the 22nd. It doesn't look very far on a map, but the trip was about 12 hours, and 2 ferry's and 2 busses long. Mostly we just slept, so it wasn't too bad. But we arrived in Phi Phi and fell in love. It's a small island, and the town is so amazing. It's just brick streets with shops and restaurants on either side. There are no cars on the island, but you dont need them because it's so small, and everything is well in walking ... read more
So I left the Philippines at 6pm on wednesday evening, and 3 airplanes and 1 night in hong kong airport later, arrived in Koh Samui! Shannon and Jaclyn picked me up at the airport, and it was amazing!! I was so happy to see them both!! Airport reunions are the best, especially after 24 hours of traveling, and when you're going to thailand. I am so happy that i decided to come to thailand. It's so amazing here, and i've only been here 3 days. Right now we are on the island of Koh Samui, and it's a huge change from what i've been doing for the past 7 weeks. It is quite touristy; lots of resorts, tons of restaurants, and even families strolling up and down the beach. From what shannon and Jaclyn say, this ... read more
Today is my last full day in the Philippines! I can't believe how fast 6 weeks has gone by! This whole chapter is done now, and tomorrow i'm on to the next part of my adventure. Thailand!! hooray!! Being here has definitely opened my eyes to new perspectives. Life here has (obviously) been very different than at home, and took some adjusting to. I realized a lot of things that we have at home that we for sure take for granted. Some examples: - electricity all the time, whenever you want it. Here, not so much. The brownouts can make life very frustrating and a flashlight is an essential part of life. I am grateful for mine almost daily. - Adequate Plumbing!!!!!!!!!!!!! nuff said. - We dont have cockroaches in our houses, or spiders that could ... read more
Since my last entry, lots has happened. The last week and a half in San Agustin was not all that busy. The weather was pretty bad, so we didn't get to do a whole lot of painting, which is too bad. Definitely did not feel very productive my last week there. We were in the middle of painting the roof, so when it was raining working was not an option. We did a lot of waiting for the rain to stop. Anyways, it was still good, and after boracay, the time just flew by. The last night on the island, Breken's host family had a big going away feast for him/kinda me cause i was leaving too... i claimed it as half mine. Whenever someone goes away, we always have so much food. it's amazing, and ... read more
i'm an idiot, and thought that i put this up on december 6th,... but apparently i didn't put it up, so i am officially an idiot. So i'm posting it now. This is what had happened up to december 6th! Enjoy! Okay, so as mr. farrell so lovingly pointed out, i haven't blogged in a while... sorry!! It's been busy around here. We said goodbye to three volunteers here who had been here for 2.5 and 3 months, respectively. It was quite sad to see them go, but they'd been here for quite a while, and were probably ready to move on. We still miss them tho. Thinking that it might be strange for the three remaining volunteers (us), we decided that it was time to have a little getaway. So Breken, Kathryn and myself went ... read more
Hi! It's been forever since i've written on this, sorry. The internet is quite slow, and sometimes i just dont want to have to deal with it! But everything is really good. I'm settling into life here, and i'm enjoying myself. Lots has happened in the past two weeks, and i'm not really quite sure where i should even begin! First of all, i have officially switched programs. I am no longer working at the daycare. I just didn't feel that what i was doing there was really contributing, and it just really wasn't for me. I spent two weeks there giving it a fair shake, and i just didn't feel like i should be putting my time and efforts in that particular place. So, i have now switched to painting, and today was my first ... read more
Yup. I have made it to Romblon, and things are definitely very different here. We got here via a small ferry (about 200-300) or so people. It left Batangas at 5pm on Saturday, and we arrived in San Agustin roughly 5am the next day. It was filled with bunk beds, and was definitely a crazy new experience for me. I slept on and off using my purse as a pillow, which was not all that comfortable, seeing as it had my running shoes and snorkel in it. But regardless, i made it and have been settling into my host families house. They are very nice so far, and my room is good. I have a double bed(!!) and a table and mirror, and that's about it. I dont need much else really. And i also have ... read more
