Labour Day holiday! Four days off work! I had booked an early flight to take me south to Guangzhou. However, when I turned up the airport my flight had been cancelled. Cheers Air China. I am seriously contemplating about whether I will use them again in the future as they also messed up my flight at the National Day holiday. I headed to the ticketing desk and was rebooked onto a flight 5 hours later, so much for getting to spend the day in Guangzhou. Instead I spent most of it in Beijing airport, which is a pretty boring place. At least, I got to try a chain noodle place that I have been meaning to try for while. Ajisen Ramen was quite nice, not the worst Japanese style noodles I've ever had, but not the ... read more

After checking out of my hotel, I went on the search for breakfast and coffee. I ended up at Starbucks, where I had a coffee and some kind of breakfast crossiant. Starbucks really is a mecca for foreigners as I saw more in there than I had at the different places I had visited the day before. My breakfast wasn't really substantial enough, so I wandered back up Furong Ancient Street looking at the food options. I ended up at a stall selling duck wraps. It was 18 RMB, not too cheap, but it hit the spot and filled me up nicely. Yesterday had been a nice sunny day albeit a bit windy. Today was overcast and definitely a lot chillier. I headed to the Five Dragon Head Pools Scenic Area. It is really close to ... read more

The train from Beijing to Jinan was quick, only about 90 minutes. Jinan West Station, where the high speed rail stops is quite far out of the city. The local bus stops in the small bus station just across from the train station. There were a few signs and I just followed some people, who I hoped were heading in the right direction. Jinan is famous for Its mineral springs that are all over the city. I had decided to head to Baotu Springs, which is the most famous. The K109 bus goes there from the west train station. The bus journey took about 40-50 minutes and as the bus progressed it filled up with people. It was also really hot and sunny, and I felt like I was being roasted alive in my seat. The ... read more

When I first visited China many, many years ago, one of the places I really enjoyed in Beijing was the Summer Palace. It was definitely somewhere I wanted to revisit and finally the opportunity arose. I took the subway to Beigongmen Station. That was a bit of a novelty as when I'd visited previously there had been no subway and we'd been at the mercy of taxi drivers, who weren't exactly legit. I headed out if the exit and there were no useful signs here, like there were at the Temple of Heaven, to tell you which way to go. You have to turn back on yourself and walk for about 5 minutes to get to the ticket office. There were several different options for tickets and I went for the through ticket which covered admission ... read more

A rainy day in Beijing was a good excuse to visit a museum. A quick online search came up with the National Art Museum of China, so I headed there. It is really easy to get to and even has its own subway station with an exit right in front of the museum. The museum is free to enter but you must show your passport at the ticket office. I was hoping that I would get a ticket like at the Capital Museum, but not so. Probably for the best as it is a bit of a waste of paper. Since it was raining, I had expected the museum to be really busy, but there weren't too many people. After security, I headed to the entrance, but first I stopped at some sculptures outside. The first ... read more

Food is for me an important part of travelling and living in other cultures. So I generally tend to look for cookery classes and food tours to participate in. In a large city like Beijing there are plenty of options. I attended a few sessions at the Beijing Cooking School, which was formerly known as the Hutong Cuisine Cooking School. It's located in Dengcao Hutong in eastern part of central Beijing. I really like wandering the hutongs and I was happy the cookery school was in a traditional neighbourhood. The building the school is in is nice and it's nice to get a peek around the inside of a house in the hutong. I loved the courtyard and it was a great place to sit and relax and eat all the deliciousness we had created. 5th ... read more

A few months ago, I had done a breakfast eats tour in Beijing. I had really enjoyed it, so vowed to do the evening food tour ran by the same company. It took a while to get round to it, but I eventually did. The group met by the subway station so it was easy to find. I think there were about 11 of us on the tour and we had two guides with us. The guides were lovely, super friendly and knowledgeable. It was great to hear their stories as well as the information about the food, restaurants, and China in general. We headed off into the hutongs to our first stop. Hutongs are the old traditional neighbourhoods in Beijing, but the word actually come from Mongolian, when Kublai Khan invaded China. The original word ... read more

I used to love Cherry Blossom Season in Korea, so when a coworker told me that Beijing has lots of cherry blossoms and Yumyuantan Park, in particular, is famous for them, I knew I would have to make a visit. I had a bit of a walk from the subway station, there might be others closer. I did manage to get lost once before getting on the right track. It took me about 15 minutes to reach the park and I made my way to the ticket office. The park looked quite busy, but there was no queue at the ticket office. I got a lovely surprise when I bought the ticket as it was only 10 RMB. What a cheap day out! The ticket was also rather beautiful as it a special cherry blossom one ... read more

The subway leading to the Temple of Heaven was packed. I took exit A2 from Tiantan Dongmen station and it was a short walk to the entrance gate. I queued up to buy my ticket to find out that they only accepted cash, WTF, everywhere usually accepts mobile payment and some places don't even accept cash. Annoyed, I headed off to find an ATM. Then made my way back to the ticket office. I bought the through ticket which covers entry to the park and the three main attractions: the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, The Imperial Vault of Heaven and the Circular Mound Altar. The ticket cost 28 RMB, as it is off season so cheaper, I don't know how much it would be in the high season, but probably not too much more. ... read more

I'd had a good night's sleep, but didn't want to get out of the nice warm bed. Eventually, I got myself sorted and made my way down to the hostel's bar/restaurant for some breakfast. That took a bit of doing as the aiyi spoke no English and I speak no Chinese and everything I wanted on the menu seemed to be unavailable. Eventually, I settled for some black tea and a ham and egg French toast. The aiyi was lovely a brought me a big flask of water so that I could keep topping up my tea. I read while waiting for my breakfast and read and read. I think it took an hour for my food to come. I don't know why it took so long, in hindsight I probably should have ordered Chinese food ... read more
