I am in wind-down mode, since my trip is almost over. Getting up and motivated is becoming more of an effort. The sky was grey and overcast again. After a late breakfast, I headed out. I made my way to the Old Town and to the Bratislava City Museum, which is housed in the former Town Hall. The Old Town Hall building dates back to the 14th century and the tower was built around 1370. The Old Town Hall was originally three different buildings that were people's houses; Jacobus' house with a tower, Pawer's house, Unger's house and the Apponyi Palace. The museum is also the oldest in Bratislava and was founded in 1868. The entrance is through the courtyard and it was 5 euros to visit the museum. After ditching my coat, I made my ... read more

The grey skies and rain that I encountered when I woke up didn't not really motivate me to move much. It took me longer than I wanted to get myself sorted and out the door. I had decided to visit the Slavin Monument as it was only about a twenty minute walk from where I was staying. What I didn't realise until I started that walk was that it was pretty much all uphill and involved quite a lot of stairs. Also in the mix was quite a lot of ice on the paths, making the walk pretty slippery in places. However, I survived and made it to the Slavin Memorial Monument in one piece. There were few other people about and most looked like locals just out for a morning run or walk. the monument ... read more

The free walking tour didn't start until 11 am, which was nice and late. This meant that I could have a relatively lazy morning. I made my way to the Old Town for the start of the tour, but I managed to get lost, prominent street names are not Bratislava's forte, China has definitely spoilt me in this respect. I thought I was going to miss the tour as I wandered the streets trying to right myself and find the meeting place. I made it there, only about five minutes late, and saw quite a group of people. This part of Europe is definitely busier. My first impressions of the Old Town of Bratislava was that it was really cute and quite a lot busier than the places I had just been, which is understandable as ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna January 12th 2020

My overnight train arrived in Vienna around 8 am. I hadn't really slept much on the train and hadn't eaten, so my first port of call was McDonald's for breakfast. 4 euros for a McMuffin and a coffee and no hash brown was a shocking reminder that I was back in Western Europe. While eating my breakfast, I decided what to do. Since I couldn't check into my hostel in Bratislava until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, I had quite a lot of time to kill. I had been to Vienna many, many years ago when I lived in Germany. I can't really remember too much about it. All I can remember is going to the 'Bermuda Triangle' area for a drink, I think we were staying in that area, and the cashpoints dispensing 100 ... read more

10th Jan: The train from Brasov dropped me off at Sighisoara around 11 am. The journey had been uneventful. The station was small and dead. I headed straight to the ticket office to buy my ticket for the overnight train to Vienna for the following day. I had tried to buy the ticket online, but they had to post the actual ticket to you. I don't know why they can't just use e-tickets like for the domestic trains. Thank god there was no queue as the ticket proved to be a bit of a ballache to buy. The woman couldn't find a ticket for sale on the system, but seemed to think there should be tickets available and she ended up having to phone someone, but after about 10-15 minutes it was all sorted and I ... read more

After how long it took me to get breakfast the day before, I played it safe and headed to McDonald's to get something quick and easy. It wasn't that quick though, I ended up waiting about ten minutes for my food to be ready. Hash brown, muffin, and coffee were fine, and once finished I headed round to the bus station for my trip around some of the famous sights of the region. We left around 9 am. Another score for off peak travel as there were only three of us on the trip. We drove for about an hour. It was nice to drive through the valley basin seeing all the mountains around the edges. We passed through small towns and sleepy little villages. I really like all the brightly painted houses, just makes everything ... read more

The place I was staying didn't have a kitchen, which meant I needed to find somewhere to have breakfast. In a big tourist town like Brasov, I thought that would be easy. I was proven very wrong. I had found a place online that looked quite good, but I had forgotten the name by the time I got in the right vicinity of the restaurant/cafe. There were quite a few places that looked shut, another cafe that was completely dead, normally that wouldn't bother me, but for some reason it did here. So, I ended up at Starbucks on the main square. I had a coffee and some kind of cheese, pesto, and I think tomato focaccia/ciabatta thing. It was quite nice. I enjoyed relaxing in the cafe as it wasn't too busy. Now, I was ... read more

When I got to the train station in Sibiu, I found out that my train was delayed by 40 minutes. Great, 40 minutes longer that I could have had in bed. The station was pretty cold, but at least there was free wifi. I love that all the train stations in Romania have free wifi. The journey to Brasov took a couple of hours. Second class was very comfortable (I had previously taken first class on my journey to Sibiu), but absolutely freezing. I don't know why the train was so cold, but everyone was bundled up, trying to nap. I really don't like that they don't announce the train stations on Romanian trains. I had to do a bit of guesswork with my arrival time because of the delay. Luckily, most people seemed to be ... read more

5th Jan: The train journey to Sibiu took about about five hours. I had gone for first class since my credit card didn't seem to like it when I tried to book second class. The carriage was big and comfy, I would need to take a second class journey to see if it was worth the extra money (I did later in my trip, and second class was more than adequate). I had bought some snacks from the bakery to eat and I scoffed them pretty quite as they were delicious. The pretzel/bagel type thing, Covrigi, was particularly delicious and reminded me of those I'd had in Poland. I watched the scenery go by as the train made its way to its destination. Soon after leaving Bucharest, we entered places covered with snow. We stopped at ... read more

I only really had one day to explore Bucharest, so I decided to make the most of it and booked to do two different free walking tours, so that I would get a good oversight of the city. I was staying by the main train station, the Gare du Nord, so my walk to the Old Town, where the first tour began, took about 40 minutes. The area that I walked through wasn't really the nicest. It didn't feel unsafe, it was just a bit rundown. I really liked some of the street art that I came across. I don't know if it was just random or a set towards gentrification. I got a bit lost on my way to the meeting place and was worried that I was going to miss the tour, this seems ... read more
