The first 135km of the Outback Way, from Alice Springs to Gemtree, were boringly uneventful. “Australia’s Longest Shortcut” runs for a total of 4,615km (2,868 miles) across Australia all the way from Kalgoorlie in WA to Cairns in Queensland, the vast majority of which is unsealed, bumpy dirt track. Our great Outback Adventure consisted of 1,179km (732 miles) of it and we had taken all due precautions this time - two jerry cans full of diesel, a full water tank, tool box, UHF radio, sand boards etc. But, for the first hour or so we were beginning to wonder if we had overdone it...
