We woke up early to walk down to the beach and watch sun rise. We walked along north beach and found a few people camping under the stars on the beach. We settled down to watch the sunrise on the beach and the group who had been camping out on the beach called us over to a nest of green turtles hatching. The sand was alive with baby turtles as 50 or so baby turtles hatched out of their eggs and scrambled over the sand and into high tide. We had to be careful not to tread on them as there were so many and we were doing our best to protect them from the hungry birds on the journey into sea. But a few were picked off from the sea once the sea gulls realised ... read more

After our relatively comfortable trip on the Greyhound we arrived at the Gladstone bus stop a couple of hours before we needed to checkin on our ferry, so decided to walk the 2km to the terminal which turned out to be relatively straight forward. Once we were checked in it wasn't long before our ferry transfer to Heron Island departed in the bright sunshine, and as there were 20 guests aboard there was loads of space. During the two hour cruise we got to see a couple of infommercials on the island telling us all about the wildlife and the islands luxurious facilities that includes private secluded island you can glamp (posh camping) on for $1000 a night with your own chief. When we arrived at the Island the first thing you come to is the ... read more

We didn't have to give the Moke back til 9am this morning so we got up early and made the most of having transport, making our way over to the IGA at Nelly bay to pick up a couple of provisions and stopping at the Harbour to take a few photos. Will also thought he would re-live his mini racing days and put the little Moke to the test up the hills and around the bends whilst Jo held on so as not to be thrown out the side of the car. It was then time to fill up with petrol and head back to our hostel in Nelly Bay to hand in the keys. With the Moke safely returned we made breakfast in the camp kitchen - a treat of bacon and egg sandwiches. We ... read more

Due to a combination of the birds calling and the German campers having breakfast near our hut we were up early this morning, so with the whole Island to explore we hired a Mini Moke and set off after breakfast. Jo initially drove, although after Kangarooing down to Horseshoe Bay Will took over with his more gentler approach! Quickly getting our bearings we'd located the supermarket and the petrol station to fill up. We soon found ourselves in Picnic Bay looking at the wreck of the George Rennie; a boat initially built in 1885 and used in a variety of capacities including coal shipment before it was used as a break wall for smaller vessels. Nearby was a walk to Hawkings Point so we set off to take in the views of Nelly Bay, Mount Stuart, ... read more

The journey down the east coast started today and we were up early to catch our Greyhound bus to Townsville. Fortunately we'd walked the route the night before as Jo was still half asleep and suggested walking in the wrong direction! Once aboard it was a case of getting comfortable and trying to sleep, although a young kid did initially threaten to spoil the journey with a few screams albeit he fortunately settled down. Stopping at Cardwell our 5 hour drive passed by quickly with the highlight for Will being a brief drive along the V8 Supercup track coming into Townsillve before getting to the ferry terminal conveniently next to the bus stop! Fortunately we were soon boarding the ferry although we had to listen to a lady adamantly telling another passenger for the whole journey ... read more

It was a rushed start to the day as Will's alarm didn't work, so we woke up at 7.20 and had to be on board the boat by 7.40! After a very quick brushing of the teeth and grabbing our swimmers we made a dash for the boat. Luckily we made it although we were one of the last to board. Once on board we helped ourselves to tea and Milo (hot chocolate) and cookies to help us wake up a bit. The Skipper then introduced the rest of the crew who would be helping us throughout the day and we went through the usual safety talks. It was then time to get our wet suits, snorkels and booties for our fins fitted before heading up to the top deck to enjoy the ride out to ... read more

After sleeping at Darwin to catch our early morning flight to Cairns we arrived at our Hostel Gilligan's before we could check in, so we grabbed the essentials for a day relaxing in the sun and took the short walk to the man made lagoon. We were soon laying our sarongs under a shady palm tree snoozing the day away. Since coming off our tour regime of having three meals a day Will has been suffering so Jo decided to wake him up with a double cheese burger from McDonald's which he was very pleased with, and he surprisingly savoured in more than 3 mouthfuls! Soon it was time to head back to the hostel and enjoy the free dinner they provided, and we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the turkey escalopes, mash and ... read more

With all of our bags packed for Cairns we checked out of our hostel and headed to Darwin's waterfront before our afternoon of fishing. The waterfront was reminiscent of the restaurants around the friendship gardens in darling harbour, although a little smaller and they have the added features of a wave pool and a man made lagoon with a shark/croc net. After a couple of quick pictures we headed to Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal to pick up our afternoons fishing charter. Lochy the skipper soon had us crushing out to sea to catch the tide as it turned as this would probably provide the best chances of catching anything. With Amy giving us a quick run through on what to do we baited our hooks and cast our lines in. Straight away Jo was in on ... read more

Having woken up feeling a little under the weather we took advantage of our empty dormitory and had a lay in ahead of our trip booked for the afternoon. Soon it was lunch time so we got ourselves organised and headed into town to buy some cheap sacrificial clothes for Sundays fishing trip. With some bargains bagged it was time to head to the transit centre for pick up. Fortunately there were only 4 of us booked in for the Crocodile Express today so Ron our driver picked us up in the company 4x4. Pointing out local sights such as the Humptydo Hotel the journey soon passed by and we headed out to some wetlands where there was a huge array of wildlife Ron told us the road which we were driving along was actually a ... read more

We spent most of this morning in our hostel sorting out blogs and doing our washing. Around lunchtime we walked down to the other end of the town to go to the tourist info centre. We were planning a crocodile jumping cruise and a fishing trip for the next 2 days and we managed to get them both sorted with a little help from the locals at the tourist information centre. Next we called into Coles on our way back from to the hostel and bought some basic backpacker rations which meant we had cereal for lunch! And we then caught the bus down towards Mindil Beach to take a look at the Museum which had been recommended by our tour guide Nick. The museum had an exhibition in Cyclone Tracy which pretty much wiped out ... read more
