We're driving to Ohio for the weekend for a family reunion. From Des Moines, our destination in Ohio is about an 11 hour drive. My parents and brother's family started out going westward into Illinois but then cut down southward. We went a different route. We decided to start the drive on Thursday and stop in the Chicago area to see my aunt and uncle (on the other side of the family, so they aren't attending the reunion). We met them for pizza at Palermo's on 95th. I love seeing them. We grew up very close with them, as their two kids are roughly the same age as my siblings and me. After dinner, I took the family to Haunted Trails. Haunted Trails is where we went for mini golf when I was a kid. Our ... read more

We checked out of our Hamilton Lake cabin at noon yesterday and said goodbye to the ducks. We thought we couldn't check into Hotel Hale until 4pm, but we learned later that they actually have a 3pm check-in time. We decided to go exploring for four hours. First, we took the drive up West Mountain Drive on the west side of the bath houses. Two locals recommended this drive to us, so we decided to give it a shot. It was short but beautiful with dense forest. We stopped at the roundabout, where there were parking spots, and took a look at the trail map. The trail was 10 miles long! We weren't dressed for a hike anyway, so we decided to take a stroll on the trail for about ten minutes and double back. It ... read more

We spent two nights at the historic Lake Hamilton cabins. The owners are so friendly and welcoming. Skip gave us a tour of our cabin and gave us information on the national park and some local attractions. They checked in on us during our stay to see if there was anything else we needed. It's really been a great stay. The property was owned by Skip's parents. Our cabin was built in 1948, I believe he said. There were four guest cabins built before ours. Ours is the only one with a cement slab, he said. It's two stories with the bedrooms on the main floor to keep them cool. At the time it was built, it had an attic fan, which he said was state of the art back then. Today, it has air conditioning. ... read more

We have a family reunion later this summer, so we told the kids our family vacation would be a road trip this year. I asked the kids if there was any place they were interested in going that was in driving distance. Joanna checked our map of national parks and declared that she wanted to go to Hot Springs National Park, located down in Arkansas. We knew nothing about Hot Springs National Park at the time. I imagined it was a place full of thermal activity and hot springs. I thought maybe we'd be able to hike to hot springs and soak in them. When I started researching it, I found out it's a very different place than I imagined! Hot Springs National Park is the second smallest national park. The only one that's smaller is ... read more

After breakfast at the YMCA Trout Lodge, we set out on our drive to Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas. The drive is roughly 6 hours. We had a lot of recommendations from friends on things to see during our drive. We decided to add one stop on our drive down and another stop on our drive back up. Today, we decided to stop at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park based on a recommendation from our friends Jay and Marjorie. Driving through Missouri is something else! First, it really is beautiful. Everything is green and lush, and we drove through rolling hills and up and down the Ozark "mountains." However, most of the highways are small, two-lane state highways with no mile markers or highway exits. These highways are often winding and close to trees on both ... read more

After a delicious breakfast, we got ready and headed out to the boathouse. Andrew wanted to take the kids out on the Jon boat again. It's free to rent, but there is only one, so he wanted to go as soon as they opened. We also thought it was a good idea to go early due to the heat, but the sun actually seemed the strongest at this hour of the morning! Andrew let Oliver drive, though we found out later that it's supposed to be for licensed driver's only. Oops. At least the lake was pretty much empty at that time! And Oliver did a great job. While they were off exploring the water, I decided to explore the shoreline. I hung out with the geese at the swim beach for awhile and then decided ... read more

We checked into the YMCA Trout Lodge last night. It's beautiful, and it's set in the perfect location for activities with a lot of forested areas and a lake. It's in a fairly secluded area of eastern Missouri. I found when I was looking for a camp experience for families. There is a family camp experience offered in Iowa through the Y that looks fun, but it's really expensive. I found this experience in Missouri, and it's also expensive, but looked like it might be worth it with all of the activities offered. The cost of our loft room is $367/night, but it includes three meals a day. We decided to try it as part of our family vacation! We arrived yesterday at 4pm. Our room is very spacious and offers incredible views of the lake. ... read more

We left Jellystone at 7:30am and set out for the Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis. We had plenty of time before our tram ride up the arch, so we decided to swing by Louisiana, Missouri, on our way to St. Louis. Andrew's paternal grandmother grew up in Louisiana, Missouri, right on the Mississippi River. In fact, their home overlooked the river! Today, there's an empty lot where the home stood, but it was still nice getting to see where she grew up. The town is cute and very small. It was the front of their house that overlooked the river, but they could also walk a couple blocks away from the river into town. It was probably a great place to grow up! After our stop in Louisiana, we continued our drive to St. ... read more

Years ago, we traveled through Hannibal and tried to tour the Mark Twain Cave. There was extensive flooding, and the area was underwater. This year, on our drive to Arkansas, we decided to stay near Hannibal and finally get to the cave! Many roads and highways are under construction near Des Moines right now. We ended up traveling east first, and our route took us through Pella and down near Keokuk. We listened to a dramatized audiobook on the way, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I thought I downloaded an edited version for children, but that was not the case. We ended up having a conversation about language and slurs. Anyway, we made it to our destination! The drive was scenic and beautiful. It was mostly a two-lane highway the whole way, and we drove through ... read more

I got up at 2am. Although activities at Aulani start up fairly early in the day, they don't start up that early! I enjoy a bit of quiet time in the mornings, though, and get a chance to work on my puzzles. Joanna has been stirring around sunrise, so she and I have been sipping on our pineapple-orange-guava (POG) juice out on the balcony while watching the sunrise. We got a standard view but lucked out. Although we can see the air conditioning units off to one side of our balcony, we also see a bit of the gardens, the rolling hills, and the sunrise! At 7:30, I went down to Rainbow Reef. I was first in line. By the time they opened at 8am, there was quite a line behind me that was at least ... read more
