November 10th 2006

Spent 3 days in Mui Ne, a seriously chilled out tiny beach town (there's hardly a town here really, just a single road) a few hours north of Saigon. No traffic, hardly any cars and just 22km of sandy beach - perfect! It's really windy so it's a haven for kite surfers and windsurfers, which means the sea isn't great for swimming, but we were literally just doing nothing - staying in cute little wooden bungalows right on the beach, and rolling out of bed to sit on deck chairs on the beach, drink fruit shakes, watch the amazing kite surfers and by night, eat seafood and drink cocktails - bliss! Didn't realise how exhausted I was from travelling as have been constantly on the go for at least the last month and desperately needed a ... read more

The muddy Mekong Delta

Spent 2 days on the Mekong Delta - took little boats along the small canals of the Mekong River, being paddled along by tiny local women wearing cone hats, passing all the locals living in little wooden huts along the way. It involved lots of 'tourist trips' such as visiting a coconut candy factory, seeing how they made rice paper and being made to listen to people play 'local music', although I don't even think they could play instruments as it was the most hideous noise I've ever heard! So some of the trip was a bit cringeworthy, but was really cool to see the floating markets - locals selling anything and everything from little wooden boats, and the locals were so friendly - always waving at us as we passed by on the boat, plus ... read more

On a busy street of Saigon, a local old man stops dead in his tracks - his jaw drops and he is staring, wide-eyed at someone. In his overwhelmed state, he manages to stutter "V-v-vic-toria A-a-adams..." He starts to shout and walk towards her, pointing, "VICTORIA ADAMS! VICTORIA ADAMS! POSH SPICE!!" People on the street start to turn, and I look around to see who he is pointing at. It's.......Alex. Oh my god, hilaaarious. ... read more

After a crazy 11 hour journey to cross the border (which was supposed to take 6), vehicles pushing and shoving to cross the river, people packed into vans, onto the roof and everwhere - manic! Made it to Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon) to meet my best friend Alex who has flown out to travel Vietnam with me - been so great to have chats and giggles again and the best thing - she brought me cheese, Guylian chocolates and choc digestives from mum at home and English magazines!! What a treat! This city is MANIC. Motorcyles motorcyles motorcyles absolutely EVERYWHERE, its crazy noisy and polluted - crossing the road is terrifying! Have got the hang of it now - you just have to walk slowly out into the wall of traffic and they will gradually ... read more

The amazing temples of Angkor

Despite the unfortunate incident with my camera, I set off in my tuk tuk, plastic disposable camera in hand, to see the temples of Angkor, the most famous sight in Cambodia and probably all of S-E Asia. Angkor was once a great empire, built in 200 AD and is now a lost city, surrounded by forest and lakes. Angkor Wat is the most famous one, and is the largest religious building in the world, but all the temples were amazing in their own way - the Bayon: hundreds of huge buddha faces built into the stone, Ta Prohm: completely swallowed by the jungle - huge trees growing onto and into the huge temple, and also peaceful magical smaller temples surrounded by moats, temples with intricate beautiful carvings, and walls depicting ancient stories. Would probably take a ... read more

People in Phnom Penh messed up my visa (wrong dates, so now have less time in Vietnam than I wanted), my camera got stolen on the bus to Siem Reap, arrived in Siem Reap to literally about 50 touts surrounding the bus like wolves, all pushing and shoving me and pulling on my arms really hard, and then went to the tourist police to get a report for my stolen camera, only for them to spend over an hour being unhelpful, writing a report but refusing to give me one so now not sure whether will be able to claim on insurance. Now have to waste time going back tomorrow to try and get it. Make it to Ankor Wat temples, for sunset, hoping for something beautiful to cheer me up...was cloudy, couldn't see a thing. ... read more

Arrived in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, after struggling to get on and off 2 flights with my still very-much-in-pain legs! Phnom Penh is a crazy hectic place, motorbikes, cars and tuk tuks everywhere, no road markings, everyone just driving wherever and whichever side of the road they feel like - mad! Is a big sprawling and dusty city, and the signs of the war are obvious everywhere as much of the city is still being built or in poverty. Yet as you pass people sitting on the roadside in the dirt, a few metres along will be the most beautiful ornate pagoda, covered in gold - so surreal. Phnom Penh (and Cambodia in general) has had a rough past - they suffered under the maoist regime of the Khmer Rouge, who from 1975-79 committed ... read more

Mel and I are just back from our 2-day climb of Mount Kinabalu - the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, 4,100m high. SO SO hard, oh my god. All I can say is that I am in absolute AGONY. I have never experienced bodily pain like this and it was the most physically challenging thing I have ever done in my life, and I honestly struggled every single step of the way. The first day began at 8am, and involved a 6-hour uphill climb to a resthouse up the mountain. 6-hours may not seem long but it was literally steep uphill ALL the way - it was unrelenting and the altitudes meant we were contantly out of breath and lightheaded and every step was a massive effort for me. Luckily we had a great guide who ... read more

After cleverly choosing to leave Semporna on Hari Raya, the holiday equivalent of Christmas Day, we managed to get out to Sepilok after lots of negotiating with rickety minivans and arrived hot, sweaty and tired in the lush jungle surroundings of Sepilok, staying at the little hostel lodge where we were the only guests! Was like our own private jungle retreat (complete with mosquitos and red ants), which was cool. Spent an evening relaxing, enjoying the jungle sounds and getting eaten alive by mosquitos then the next day went to the Sepilok Orang Utan sanctuary to see the adorable animals. Unfortunately, the main part of the sanctuary had blown down in strong winds a few days before, so most of the viewing areas and jungle walks were closed, so we could only see the baby orang ... read more

Diving still incredible! Dived at different islands of Mabul and Kapalai yesterday, which was macro muck diving - very different from the pretty corals of Sipadan - lots of sand, wrecks, and random large objects and rocks to look under which was very fun. Saw completely different types of fish - crocodile fish, HUGE cuttlefish, massive groupers (literally twice the size of me) and the weird looking stonefish, frogfish, leaf fish and pipefish - very cool! Today was my last day of diving at Sipadan - was a fantastic day and one of the dives was the BEST dive I've done here so far - more sharks than I've ever seen in my life, they were literally everywhere! And turtles gliding around every direction you look, and even saw a big school of squid mating - ... read more
