Jessie and Nate, we met Feb 5th on the shuttle between San Pedro and Antigua. I'm glad you have written this up. Though you talked about it that day, there was so much more in this account. Hard to know just what to learn from it, but clearly the police in Xela think it wise to hike around there only with them as escorts. Glad you two came out ok and continued on with your travels. Christine

Confined to the room, unable to get off the toilet...
You must be really looking forward to India then...

India
We're pretty pumped for the food, and not so much for the toilet adventures :)

New Blogger
Hey guys, We'd love to know who the blogger is so we can read their blog and send them a message. We forgot to add to our Semuc Champey blog that someone who follows our blog recognized us. It was super random! I wonder if that happens to other bloggers a lot. Thanks for letting us know! Nate and Jessie

All I could think of is "MY JESSIE" and cryed. We are so glad that you are both ok and unharmed. Since the age of 16 I heard of you wanting to travel. This is your dream coming alive so don't let any thieves distroy it for you. Love to you both, Uncle Chuck & Aunt Judy

Hi Aunt Judy and Uncle Chuck
Thanks for sending us the comment and thinking of us. You know that unless something really serious happened, nothing will get in the way of fulfilling our dream of finishing this trip. There is still so much out there to see, do and experience. Love and miss you both! xo

Keep on going!
Dear Nate and Jessie, we have been very sorry to hear what happened to you! This must have been a really hard time. We have experienced something similar. It is true - these things happen when you do not expect it and when you take all precautions. We were robbed in Australia (the "safest" country on our 1 year trip). Well, they did not attack us with a pistol, thank god. But as we were on the move they took everything we had: backpacks, passports, computer..... - we were left with just the clothes we were wearing. In the beginning we wanted to stop our trip - but we decided to leave the country. We went to Africa instead and continued our trip. This was the best we could have done. The first week is horrible but you will see - in a new country a lot goes back to normal. I think you will still be more careful for a long time. But it is true, this is part of the experience. We wish you safe travels and hope the fun will be back very soon for you. Keep on going! Nina and Markus

Hi Nina and Markus
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. We are so sorry that happened to you as well. It's just not fun at all. We can't even imagine losing our bags and everything! How horrible. We are feeling better and better as time goes by. We both are still a little on edge at night but other than that are back to enjoying our trip. And even though the robbery happened in Guatemala it is still one of our favorite countries in Central America. That being said, we will definitely be recommending it to other travelers just with a warning as well. :) Take care! Nate and Jessie

Great blog - Very well handled
Sorry to hear that you guys were robbed, really glad to hear you handled it so well with such maturity. Keep on travelling. Glad to see you have not lost faith in people or yourselves. Happier times down the road.

Hi Cindy
Thanks for the comment. We definitely haven't lost faith in people, we still consider Guatemala one of our favorite countries. As with anywhere, a few people can make a bad name for an entire place. We met the most wonderful people and will always recommend Guatemala as a place to travel, but we'll make sure to atach a little word of warning. Nate and Jessie

Robbery
So glad to hear that you guys and your group are ok. This will always be a part of you but like you said "getting back on the horse" is the best one can do. You are correct in the fact that every traveler has their robbery story and our's happened in Hue, Vietnam at knife point.

Hi Elyse and Pete
Thanks for letting us know you are part of the robbery club as well. The longer we travel in Central America the more stories we hear, many of which are worse than our own. We have been trying to tell as many people as possible, not to scare them but just to make sure they are cautious and aware of their surroundings at all times. Take care! Nate and Jessie

OMG!
Hi you guys! I am so, so sorry to hear of your robbery! I can't even begin to imagine how truly scary that must have been! But as you clearly already know, the only thing those animals (that carelessly refer to themselves as humans) got were material things that can be replaced. The most important thing is that you weren't harmed in any way. I hope you're feeling a little settled now from all that craziness, and back to enjoying your travels. Take good care of each other, keep the blogs coming, and have safe travels! xoxo, Karen

Stay on the road
So very sorry that this has happened to both of you - an absolutely terrifying experience, but you are both alive and physically unharmed, so you can be very thankful for that. You are correct to keep travelling as you need to rebuild that worldly confidence you had prior to the incident - heading home now will remove any chance of doing that, plus as you correctly said, it means the thieving bastards have won. A wise person once told me, "he who angers you, controls you", and this can be modified to "the person you fear controls you." Keep on the road and regain that control of your life, which I am sure you will achieve. My warmest thoughts are with you both.

Hi Shane
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement. We have been keeping on by doing what we normally would be doing, taking public transport and even hiking to look out points on our own. Although the experience was tramatic, we've moved past the fear and now are just slightly more cautious. We're not about to let what happened ruin, what has been and will continue to be, the best years of our lives. Thanks again! Nate and Jessie

Glad to hear that you are safe and that Jess didn't lose a valuable ring...
but that's no reason for Nate not to pop the question. You two are so meant for each other!

Hi Bob and Linda
I'm sure Nate will still pop the question at some point, maybe not until we are somewhere safer so the ring isn't taken. As I keep telling my family and friends, it is out of my hands :) We'll be sure to let everyone know when it does happen though. Jessie
