Comments Hi everyone,
Thanks for the comments so far, its been lovely getting them and I apologize for not having the time to respond to you all.
In answer to the only specific question I've had; Lake Baikal is about 4200km east of moscow, it was 77 hours on an express train but I think some do it in 70.
Anyway, I'm off to china tomorrow, will hopefully get a blog entry about my trip to the gobi done today but just to warn you, posts may be sporadic for the next few months- I'm not sure about travelblog access in the PRC.
Best Wishes
Tamarax
Thank You! for all your lovely, interesting accounts and photographs. I'm following your journey avidly and enjoying everything. I have an ancient recording of a Siberian girl's choir - first heard it at school in a Russian lesson and was so overwhelmed by it that I begged my teacher to copy it for me. Wonderfully haunting stuff - and now you've seen the landscape that it came from! Amazing!
I enjoyed your Mongolia post. I have always wanted to go there. My blog is looking for travel photos. If you have time, email us some at dirtyhippiesblog@gmail.com or check us out at dirty-hippies.blogspot.com
Continued fun on your travels,
Eric
border crossings The friendly Mongolian border police remind me of arriving in Amritsar in the Punjab on a flight from Kabul to be met by a troop of Sikh soldiers who marched us across the tarmac into a hut and fed us ladhu (indian sweets) while sorting out our passports. US immigration should learn some lessons. Meanwhile here asparagus are rising from the allotment while Brown blunders, Cameron clings and Clegg charges toward the election.
no pictures of the little people? where are the very small people who live in the houses on stilts and drive the very small cars shown with the locals? Love your icy pictures of Baikal - hope you wee polite to Grandfather Frost!
Tamrooni is travelling Wow Tamara, Im really enjoying your blog. So impressed with you for going to these places by yourself. Way to go girl. I look forward to the next instalments :)
All is well here, Meshkeen is now 17 months- almost 1 1/2 can you believe it. where does the time fly to???
Take care , love holly
time differences see you are shrtly leaving russia - trains no longer on Moscow time - hope you catch your Mongolian connection OK! wonder if you saw Baikal seals? xx
hellooooo! Glad the german came in handy - lol!!! again your blog sounds amazing - always wanted to go to russia - had the next set of scans - they actually look like a baby this time (rather than an alien). I'm getting rather routund as well - not amused by having to buy size 14s lol!!! the churches sound amazing i never quite understand why ours look so depressing when I was in austria they were beautiful too - although funnily enough there are a few lovely ones in north wales - which is a bit random. Take care and enjoy exploring xxx Hannah
Hi from Aunt So sorry Tamara I have not been in touch, have been folloowing your advtres but the end of the ason herehas ben manic - last day today so will write more soon xx
shortness of bunks May all your bunks get longer or both your legs get shorter as you journey on. And may your photos and descriptions keep coming. Still awaiting the musical overlay but will be patient. Here the three party leaders are about to go head to head to head shrouded in volcanic ash from Iceland.
things not always what they seem When Granny Dida was in a Russian church she was just about to make a disparaging comment about a rather gaudy statue lying there when she realised it was an embalmed corpse attracting mourners not tourists in search of art! I have been enjoyng your blog before breakfast - Is russian ice cream still good?
Hey Tamara,
We loved your photos. Moscow looks awesome.

what is real, what is fake? I don't see what the concern is. Do you not consider yourself to still be yourself once every cell in your body has died and been replaced (excluding technicalities about bone marrow and such like that doesn't regenerate)? Similar arguments have been made for Ulysses' ship, and my bicycle.
Thinking of you Your last post seemed so near and now you seem so far from home, so glad you are enjoying the wolrld, so jealous, well done, keep safe xx Thea
An early spring must be probably the most depressing time to pay Spb a visit. Snow melts up into the depressing mess and so are people around. It's much much better these days in Moscow and I hope you already figured out this difference :)
Russians aren't grumpy and non-friendly at all, they just don't show it on any occasion as other westerners do. Just ask yourself what you did come to Russia for? To have a good time exploring a country or smiling at others waiting for an answer? If you plan to keep on with judging others' cultural values with your own yardstick you better not go further into the East. :)
Go Tamara! From the first time I saw 'Wings of Desire' I've always wanted to visit Berlin. You've only made the need deeper and more urgent! It looks like you're getting on really well with traveling. Keep taking good photos... M

It has changed a bit since '69! like magic to get your comments hot off the press - mine took weeks to get home but I did see the first moonwalk (on TV) and went to an anniversary reunion of relatives of those involved in plot to assassinate Hitler - I must see how many of my old letters survive..I feel like I am redoing my trip, very strange! lots of love, your delightfully fussy mummy xx
