One of the main reasons behind my trip to the US, San Diego Comic Con is the biggest pop culture convention in the world. SDCC started back in the early 70’s and runs for four days (I only had tickets to two of the four days). It features everything that falls under the pop culture label - comics, movies, TV, anime, computer games, action figures etc. I was told by one of the artists at Supanova Perth in June that SDCC was going to be huge. My initial expectations were blown away after seeing the line for ticket collection - it was about a kilometre long and snaked around the convention centre and back down to the nearest marina. I thought that I’d be able to get a decent spot in line if I went down ... read more

The weather in Vegas was worse than Phoenix. I think temperatures went well past 44 degrees on all of the days I was there. The dry heat really does take the wind out of your sails and the desert breeze doesn’t provide much relief during the afternoon. I think a hobo’s booze burp would be more refreshing than that blasted desert breeze. The endless asphalt and lack of shade forces you to leapfrog between hotels and casino. Of course once you enter a casino it’s impossible to get out. I spent most of the second day down by the pool working on my George Hamilton tan. The pool at the Excalibur isn’t very deep so you tend to spend most of your time walking around on your knees. Rich brought up the idea of trying to ... read more

Apologies for the lack of updates. Here is a quick rundown of what I’ve done since flying out of Colorado: Phoenix * Conditions were very toasty in Phoenix. * After collecting the rental car, it was a quick drive to the motel for a couple minutes of rest before grabbing a bit to eat at Heart Attack Grill. Heart Attack Grill is a themed burger joint were the waitresses are dressed as nurses and the cooks are dressed as doctors - I’m sure there was a disclaimer somewhere in the store declaring that staff aren’t trained nurses etc. * Customers weighing over 350 pounds get to eat for free! * 500ml bottles of Coca Cola are sold and the burgers are gigantic! Everything is cooked in lard; the fries, the patties and even the hamburger buns, ... read more

We made the trek down to the Royal Gorge (near Cañon City) for a half-day of whitewater rafting. While I have done the odd bit of rowing, canoeing and kayaking, the thought of going down some rapids was a tad daunting. While listening to the safety talks, I kept telling myself “Don’t forget this bit. Commit to memory you idiot, commit to memory”. Unfortunately for me it all went in one ear and out the other. All I could remember were the cheesy jokes. After meeting our guide and running through some specific commands, we launched and made our way down the river. It all went well until we hit a rapid by the name of “Sunshine Falls”. Immediately after going through, all I heard was a girlish scream (no it wasn’t me). One of the ... read more

Went to Coors Field to watch some baseball - the Rockies versus the Padres. I don’t follow baseball that closely back home. To be honest I’d be lucky if I’ve actually watched an entire game from start to finish. We grabbed a pre-game pint and watched a couple minutes of the World Cup final - go Espana - before heading into the stadium. Due to the popularity of the home team and their recent success, we were only able to get tickets in the upper deck. I was expecting plenty of sunshine and a limited supply of air. Our seats ended up being quite good and nowhere near the nose bleed category. The game was pretty close with the home team leading up until a bases-loaded throwing error changed the game in San Diego’s favour - ... read more

We drove down to Buena Vista - we’ll Jon did since I basically sat in the back and did nothing. The town of Buena Vista is located in central Colorado roughly midway between Salida and Leadville . The area between Buena Vista and Salida is often referred to as the "Banana Belt", due to its relatively mild winters - I’m thankful that it’s not referred to as the “Banana Hammock Belt”. The town lies at the base of the 14,000+ peaks of the Collegiate Peaks of the Sawatch Range. In summer, Buena Vista is a popular location for outdoor activities - whitewater rafting, fly fishing, mountain climbing etc. The town itself is pretty small. On the way up to our camping spot near Cottonwood Lake, it isn’t hard to take notice of the surrounding properties. I ... read more

Arrived at San Francisco airport a couple hours early since I was unsure as to how fast the train trip from Oakland would be. I could have grabbed a cab but the train was a much cheaper option - $10 versus $40+ ... I don't want my booze funds to take a hit. After checking in and making it past security - this time without the obligatory frisking which kind of made feel unwanted - I people watched for the next two hours. Yeah it's creepy but it's free. The flight across to Denver wasn't too bad. My friends Heather and Jon have been very generous and are providing me with a place to stay while in Denver. We will be heading down to Buena Vista for a couple days of camping.... read more

Starting from the Financial District, I caught a streetcar (tram) up to the Castro district. Known simply as "The Castro", the area was originally an Irish working class neighbourhood that has been transformed over the past 35 years into a large gay and lesbian community. The area is obviously filled with many stores that cater towards the GLBT community ... not that there's anything wrong with that. At times it can be quite funny to see another tourist's reaction to the contents of a store's window display - "Mommy, mommy! Why are the mannequins hugging?” If you are the sort of person that is easily offended, then I suggest that you walk through with blinkers on. From The Castro I made my way over to the Haight-Ashbury district. Commonly called "The Haight" (pronounced like "hate"), the ... read more

Made the trek from Oakland over to downtown San Francisco via BART rail. The impressive part of the trip is via the Transbay Tube - a 6km long tube that runs under San Francisco Bay. Pity this section isn't done through transparent tubing like Futurama. Starting from the San Francisco Ferry Building, the plan was to walk around and make my way over to the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. The 9.5km stroll along the waterfront seemed like a good way to shake off any residual jet lag. Stopped at Pier 39 to have a look at the basking sea lions. There can be as many as 900 sea lions lounging here during the winter months. Most tend to migrate during summer but there is always a steady population all year round. It's obviously a ... read more

This isn't going to be an interesting post. Worse still, the post doesn't feature a photo of me trying take a bite out of something larger than my head *sigh* so sad. Just updating the travel journal to say that I arrived in San Francisco this afternoon after flying in from Perth (via Singapore and South Korea). All flights were crammed full of hyperactive kids, a number of them Twilight fans *ugh*. The Perth to Singapore trek was the toughest out of the lot. Stuck between a bodybuilder that wasn't familiar with proper armrest protocol and another fella who thought that wearing headphones with speakers pointing outwards results in better sound quality. Yeah, I heard you listening to Michael Bolton at 3 in the morning. Spent most of this afternoon trying to stay awake. Did some ... read more
