On Friday, Ron & Lissa decided to venture off on their own, while Dan & I went to the Vatican. We decided to walk there from our hotel, and boy was it ever a walk. It took us about an hour to get there, but we walked through lots of small streets and saw some really neat shops. When you come upon the Vatican, it really is a site to see in person. The complex is absolutely enormous. We walked right through Saint Peter's square and it looked like they were getting ready to host an event there. We weren't sure what was happening, and there were hundreds of people around. With Dan being catholic, he wanted to attend a mass while we were there. The Vatican hosts about 4 masses a day and we were ... read more

We arrived in Rome on Wednesday afternoon. We're staying at the Hotel Sonya, near central Rome and the Opera House. After getting settled in, we decided to go for a walk. We went in and out of various streets, different piazzas, and then finally we stop for dinner at Bibo's. Great restaurant with home cooking. You must try the Calzone!!! After dinner we called it a night. Bottle 41.... Today is our full day in Rome and we woke up bright and early to head out for the Colliseum and the Forum. The Colliseum is amazing. We spent about 2 hours there wandering around. It's easy to see how life could have been way back then.... After that we walked over to the Forum and the Palenstine Hills. We ended up exploring the ruins for at ... read more

It's Tuesday and we're sitting here sipping on Lemoncello. We hired a driver to take us down the Amalfi coastline today. Just south of Sorrento, our first stop was the hillside town of Positano. Positano is the town where the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" with Diane Lane was filmed. I would have figured that the movie would have been made in Tuscany, but no, they decide to film in the south coast....wierd. Anyway, Positano is a cute little hillside town. Nothing too special to it, but I would figure in the summer months it would be hopping with a lot of beach activity. We walked around for a bit and then got back in the van. By the way, the van is a Mercedes..we have never seen one like it in Calgary. It was pretty ... read more

We arrived in Sorrento on Saturday from Montepulciano. The drive was about 4 hours long but was very scenic. However, Italians drive like crazy....NO RULES! Once we got to Sorrento, we settled into our B&B called Casa Asistrita. Another recommendation via the Rick Steves book. Great place. The rooms are very comfortable and they put on a great breakfast in the morning. Plus the cost is very reasonable. We had trouble dropping off the car since we couldn't find the lot to go to. Apparently the business moved a while back so the GPS (Bonnie) took us in the wrong direction. Traffic in Sorrento is CRAZY....to say the least. The scooters and motorcycles drive everywhere with no care in the world about other drivers or pedestrians for that matter. After freaking out for awhile, we ended ... read more

Well again we are behind on our blog. We have quite a few days to catch up, but we will finish with Tuscany and our travels there. On Wednesday in Tuscany, we decided to have a quiet day at the apartment in Montepulciano. Ron & Lissa went on to visit more hill top towns with the car. We had a great breakfast then went for a walk through the streets. The shops are open early morning until about 1:30 pm and then they close until about 4:30 pm. We have noticed that this is the norm in this country. Which is okay with us since it gives us ample time to have a nap in the afternoon. We walked and walked, up and down thoses streets until we were exhausted. After our afternoon snooze we went ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi October 31st 2007

Hi everyone,We are in Tuscany now, it has been really hard to find an internet cafe. So we need to catch up, I hope I don't forget stuff. It's Oct 31 (Happy Halloween!!) and we left Assisi last Saturday. Just to touch on Assisi, Dan & I really enjoy this town. It is absolutely gorgeous. On our last day in Assisi we went to one of the most moving churches, San Domineco. This is where Saint Clare spent her days. She devoted her life to God. It was a very charming place and very moving. The church is runned by the Friers now and they were very kind. Our final evening there, we had a wonderful meal and then we decided to stroll the town before going to bed. We came across a choir singing in one ... read more

We drove from Ravenna to San Marino, a hill top town overlooking the Umbria valley. Normally the town is very scenic and full of tourists, but today the weather was raining and the clouds hung low. We didn't see any views and most places were closed. However, we did manage to walk around and find a great place for lunch. After lunch and another bottle of wine, we decided to head out for the beautiful town of Assisi. After an hour drive we arrived in Assisi. This is a famous town due to Saint Francis of Assisi and the church he built. This town is full of nuns, monks, friers and priests. It is one of the prettiest town we have ever seen, and a must go to if you are ever in Italy. The church ... read more

We left Venice very early today (Oct 23) and went via water taxi to the train station. We took the train to Farerra where we switched trains to continue on to Ravenna. Ravenna is located on the Adriactic, south of Venice about 90 kms. We are only staying here the one night at the Hotel Bryon, which is located in central Ravenna. When we got to Ravenna, we walked to the hotel which is about 6 blocks away. We were pleasently surprised to see such a wonderful, quaint Italian town. This town is famous for its residents who ride around on bicycles. There is a white stone pathway that is for bikes only and if you accidentally walk on it, the bicyclist will ring his bell to warn you he's coming. We spent the whole day ... read more

Today is our last day in Venice (Oct 22). We were suppose to go to Verona, but decided not to go since Venice had so much to show us. We got up and hit the streets right away. One of the highlights of San Marco square close to our hotel are the thousand of pigeons (flying rats). Lissa loves birds and had to feed the darn things...to my dismay, I was conjouled into feed them to. All you do is buy the seed from a vendor and once you have that packet, the flying monsters swarm you, as you can see in the pictures. Dan was hilarious when one unfortunate bird happened to get his tail feathers under Dan's shoes. The poor thing scratched away to try and fly off, but Dan kept him under foot ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan October 22nd 2007

Well, we finally arrived in Italy. Our first stop is Milan. Once we got to our hotel, the Westin Palace, we had a snooze and then ventured out for the evening. We went to the main square and walked around. Then we came across this gorgeous, impressive church. The name escapes me at this time, but by the photos, this place must be a main attraction. We spent a few hours there and then our tummys started to grumble. We found this cool restaurant in the main Duome area, where we sat outside. The food was fantastic. We loved watching all the people mill around. There are some really beautiful people here...and some weird ones! Milan is a nice city given the time we were there, but its not very impressive. Its definitely an industrial city. ... read more
