Hola from Quito….again We are back from some more adventures, and preparing for our next. So here we are writing another couple of entries about our latest exploits. First things first I suppose. We both got a little sick when we were spending time around Cotopaxi at Hosteria Papagayo. No offence to the Hosteria, but, we ate and drank nothing but food and drink provided by them for 4 days, and both got sick. The place was very beautiful, our room was amazing, and the staff was extremely helpful, the manager even gave us a free ride into Quito because he was driving in, but we both got ill. Take it for what it is worth I suppose. But, we took a little Cipro, and we are both better. Yippie. Now, onto the latest adventure. Yesterday ... read more

Hey all, So after taking off from Santa Lucia a week early we left Quito to go to a hostal about an hour away called Hosteria Papagayo. We were dropped off at the side of the highway and had to walk a bit, but it was well worth the walk as the hostal was beautiful. It is an old farm house surrounded by miles and miles of farmland. The staff were very welcoming and we were given a huge room overlooking a lush garden. After all the rain that we experienced at Santa Lucia, the weather was great...lots of sun and warm air.....and no mud....woohoo! In our first few hours there we were given a map of the surrounding areas and we took what we thought was going to be a little walk, that ended up ... read more

Hello all, So our final week at Santa Lucia is now over. While we enjoyed our time there and will miss all the great people that we met, we are excited to move on and continue exploring Ecuador. Santa Lucia has been a wonderful experience for both Jack and I. After spending three weeks in a cloud forest we both better understand what it means to protect our environment and live sustainably. From the compos toliets we used to the local food we ate at every meal, to the techniques used in an organic garden, Jack and I have gained valuable insights iknto how to have a happy and healthy future. we had an awesome time assisting the staff at the lodge with ensuring that the lodge and the cloud forest become a place where people ... read more

Today we road the Teleferiqo. It was fun. We initally didn´t think we would be able to becuase it was very cloudy on the mountain from the moment we woke until about 10am or so when we resolved to go back into the old town, and possibly have a picnic. On our walk into the old town, the skies clear, the sun shines, and we can see the top of the mountain and the teleferiqo cars acending to the top of Cruz Loma. We had to go. We turned around, got a cab, and were at the base of the Teleferiqo in less than 20 minutes. By the time we got there, it clouded over again. We thought to ourselves, it is just our perspective: it was clear on the ride over, we just can´t see ... read more

We are back. It has been a while, 2 weeks, but we are back. We hope you all didn´t miss us too much during this dry spell. Just hold on tight, and keep your pants on: here comes the goodness. So, we have been at the Santa Lucia Cloud Forest for the last 2 weeks. We have been working hard to make one small piece of the world a better place. Changing the world ain´t easy. Anyways. Santa Lucia in near the town cum village of Nanegal, which is a two hour bus ride from Quito. The trip began with a 15 minute walk, a 20 minute city bus ride, and then the 2 hours down into the cloud forests on the western slopes of the Andes. The ride was intense...as they all are. Winding down ... read more

Hello all, So our third day and final full day in Quito have been filled with exciting bus adventures that have had us nervous at times, but we are still safe and are here to tell you all the stories. On our third day here we went to the famous equator by bus. We walked to the metro bus stop and took it all the way to the end of the line and got on a bus for the Mitad del Mundo which took us away from the New Town and gave us an opportunity to see a different view of Quito. It took us about an hour to get there and we were dropped off in the middle of the road. In front of us was the huge monument which we paid 2 dollars to ... read more

Holy cow, it is finally here. It has been so long coming; so much thought, so much planning, so much excitement, so much worry. And here we are. In the blink of an eye it came. And it is basically the end of our third day (or second if you don't count the day we arrived at midnight.) Anyways, here is our story so far, with pictures for your viewing pleasure. Our trip down was alright. No major hassels, althought the 7:05am departure was a little early, the 4 hour layover in Cleveland was a little long, the landing in Houston was hella bumpy, the one hour taxi on the runways of Houston was a little long, and the constant minor turbulence the whole way to Quito was complete nerve wracking, we arrived a-ok, and the ... read more

This is our first post. It's really just a test, but also a bit about our preparations. We have most of our gear, and our itinerary is pretty much done. Jackie still needs a pack (Christmas?....;) we both need a few pairs of nice socks, a pack towel for Jackie, a few books for reading, a few things coming on Christmas. But, we are most of the way there. We need to get our music together on our MP3 players. We have an appointment with a travel doctor this Friday. We just need a yellow fever shot, and some malaria meds. We'll also get some Ciprofloxacin, if the cost isn't so bad, as a just in case measure for stomach problems. We've both given notice to our respective employers, and we gave notice on our apartment ... read more
