Well that is with the exception of me showing up on time for a flight. I really had the best of intentions this time of being at the airport a full 2hrs ahead of the flight as recommended. The key word is recommended and I think subconsciously my brain interprets that as "I'm sure they won't let the flight leave without me." Donald, my brother, stressfully drove me to the airport, where I arrived to claim the prize of last person to check in. I thought that was a good omen, however that was short lived when I arrived at the gate and found out the flight was delayed 1.5 hrs. That wouldn't have bothered me except for the fact that the flight I was suppose to connect to in Washington DC going to South America ... read more

Anyone like a glass of wine? We were not in South Africa too long before we were at a winery tasting the nectar of the Gods. Our second night was spent camping at a small vineyard (Highlanders) where we sampled some of the local wines - sensory sensational. The last day of our 42 day overland trip saw us passing through beautiful wine growing regions before we saw our first glimpse of Table Mountain, signaling our arrival to the Mother City - Cape Town. Cape Town is an alluring city that although is very cosmopolitan still has a wild African flavor running through it. It also is a city that still has the scars of apartheid to try heal from. Located at the bottom of Africa, Cape Town is stunningly beautiful, especially when viewed from Table ... read more

Namibia is an amazing country - plain and simple. From the wildlife in Etosha National Park in the North to the incredible natural wonders of the land in the south, this country has it all. Entering Nimibia in the north we headed first to Estosha National Park. We spent two nights there. Etosha means "Great White Place" because about 25% of the park is a massive mineral pan that was formerly a lake thousands of years ago. It is now a large depression of salt and dusty clay. Although the game was not as plentiful as in the Mara, I did get to see animals that I did not get to see a lot of before, including quite a few Oryx (one of the largest of the antelope species), thousands of flamingos and we had an ... read more

After Leaving the natural wonder of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, we headed west into Botswana where the highlights were camping out in Chobe National Park and then two nights in the Okavango Delta. More animals and natural beauty abounds in this small country. Only about 1.6 million people; there seems to be more wildlife than humans. Chobe is a large national park that is famous for its large elephant herds. Whether it was driving through in 4x4s or floating down the Chober River, you quickly understand why. Huge elephants everywhere. The Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. After driving for 2 hrs in the back of a big 3 ton truck we were transported another 1 hr further in the delta on Mokoros, which are dug out canoes that are propelled by a ... read more

What a Rush! That sums up Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls are the largest waterfalls in the world and one of the natural wonders of the world. The last 2.5 days has been spent viewing the rush of the falls and experiencing the rush of adrenaline from whitewater rafting and bungi jumping. We arrived on October 16 in Victoria Falls, a small town just on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Saturday was an incredible day of whitewater rafting down the raging Zambezi River. Whitewater rafting was something that I had no intention or interest in doing; however, since 13 others were rafting I felt the peer pressure to try it. I am thankful I did. We started at the base of the falls and rafted 27 km through 21 rapids, including the largest commercial rapid ... read more

The next leg of my adventure started when I met my fellow Overlanding travelers in Nairobi on Sept 26. This started the largest part of my trip. I will be Overlanding with 24 other people driving through Eastern and Southern Africa in a large truck for the next 42 days. Not all will be going to Cape Town. Some will be getting off along the way and others will be joining us. If you can imagine a troop carrier that has been converted to a bus, that is what the truck that I will be traveling in for the next 42 days looks like. Besides touring in a big truck through the wilds of Africa, I will be sleeping for the most part in a tent. Now, I haven't slept in a tent in about 25+ ... read more

My second leg of the adventure started when I bid farewell to Edgar on the evening of the 22nd and flew into Masai Mara the following morning. No words can really describe the Masai Mara. It is one of the most beautiful, out of this world places I have ever been. And I don't say that lightly. From the moment you arrive you know this is a special place. It is romantically intoxicating, from the landscape to the literally millions of animals that live there. You get the immediate sense that you have left the human world and entered the animal kingdom. From the smells of the wild, like as though you are on a massive farm, to the smells of fresh and not so fresh kills that litter the plains. You are told to stay ... read more

Talk about a walk in the clouds! Edgar and I arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on September 11 and took a shuttle to Moshi, Tanzania, a small town at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The shuttle ride there was wild. It took 7+ hrs and had to be on some of the worst roads I have ever been on. At some points we were literally bouncing out of or seats. However, it was worth it as we saw the country side and the people who live there. A lot of Masai tribesmen and women who were herding there flock along the road, including goats and cattle. The colorful clothes and jewelry they wear as they watch their flock is quite something to see. What struck me was the amount of small children who were out in the middle ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City September 10th 2009

My first day of the adventure started by boarding a plane in Halifax bound for London last night. Edgar Samson and myself had a few drinks at his brother's to toast our adventure and then we were chaufuured to the airport by Michel. Five hours after we took off we landed in London Heathrow. We decided to spend the day in London as our flight to Nairobi only left that evening. London is a great city, we walked along the Thames and visited many of the sights, including Big Ben, the Parliament Buildings, and West Minister Abbey to name a few. Our afternoon ended at Piccadily Circus where we enjoyed a great meal and some good British Ale. Then were off to the airport to catch our flight. So far no problems.:)... read more

Dec 11, 2001 Hi everyone, this is my last official e-mail about the trip. I thought I would let everyone know that I finished uploading and sorting through the last of my online pictures. I added the last pictures form Nepal and cleaned them up some. I reorganized them into albums for each place I went. There are now 130 pictures in total on the site; however, I still have over 1,000 pictures to be developed! I literally have a world of pictures. Around the World and Back, Joel... read more
