I am going to start by typing exactly what is in my journal. However, this was a very long and full day and I only had time to write a few paragraphs. At some point I will come back and write more in retrospect. At Breakfast Slept very well again but still not quite long enough. Each night I hope for eight hours but experiencing the day and night seems so much more important than sleeping. This morning's yoga practice was much better -- the stiffness from 24 hours of airport/airplane time is finally receding. Midnight What a day! No time, sadly, to journal -- will have to carve out some time tomorrow for reflection. In short: Walking tour of Cape Town with Diane, covering many center city landmarks and encompassing 500 years of history. Midway ... read more

The forecast is for today to be the best weather of our three days in Cape Town, so Jessy has rearranged our itinerary a bit. Instead of city activities today, we have been driving along the coast. It is a gorgeous day -- blue skies, some white fluffy clouds, warm and breezy. We are driving alongside the Atlantic, which is crashing powerfully onto rock and sand beaches. We have just stopped at the "end of the world", billed as the southwestern most point of Africa (which actually doesn't make a lot of sense to me when I look at a map, as it is neither the most southern nor the most western, but I guess if you stretch logic it is the most southwestern...) -- Cape Point. We got up at 8 this morning, relatively well-rested ... read more

We are flying over desert -- it looks as if we are over the surface of another planet. We left home about 13 hours ago, flew through Amsterdam (three hour layover) and have 8 hours left of this flight. Today's destination: Cape Town, South Africa. I have never been this far from home. However, flying is a bit like suspended animation -- a slightly annoying and very cramped pause, after which you happily disembark in a new location. So I don't feel very far from home, until I look out the window and feel as if I am on Mars. Counting travel time we will be gone for two weeks; the longest vacation (other than maternity leave) that I have taken as an adult. Being away from the kids for so long (rather than being so ... read more

"By reading we learn what we did not know; by reflection we retain what we have learned." -- Isidore of Seville (apparently the patron saint of computer technicians; computer users; computers; the Internet; ) If you replace "reading" with "experiencing", that describes why it was so wonderful to travel together with Linda, Leslie, and Carrie. We experienced many things together, but each from our own point of view. We also went our separate ways to do our "own thing" on a number of occassions. Either way we came back together over breakfast, lunch, drinks, dinner . . . and "reflected" . . . discussed our experiences and our perspectives. And that is how we truly absorb the benefit that we get from the experiences. This is true whatever and wherever those experiences might be; from the ... read more

My Day in Florence I am on autobus linea 571 and will cambio a linea 75 at the fermata dei Colleseo. I am on my way to the train station. The bus just stopped at Area Sacre, which is where Julius Caesar died; and there are cats living there now, well-fed cats cared for by a below ground cat sanctuary; I can see a fat black and white cat sitting atop a column! Editorial note: I later saw that Linda and Leslie have a picture from the day before, of the same exact cat. We have been walking around enough that I can tell my way around; the bus is going past familiar sites. We are now going over very bumpy cobblestone exactly where we spent some time lost two days ago . . . we ... read more

Sunday night was a late one, so Monday started a bit slowly for me. I woke up as Linda was heading down to breakfast. I did my yoga routine, took a shower, and headed down to breakfast at 9:45. Separate Ways We had planned the night before that we would split up in the morning and meet at an agreed upon location at 3PM. Leslie and Linda got an early start to the Sistine Chapel. Carrie was heading out on a pilgrimage of sorts to Isola Tiberina, where there is a church that has special meaning to her. Carrie has a special affinity for St Bart's church in London. The church and its associated hospital were championed by a man named Rahere. He had been inspired to build the church and hospital in honor of St. ... read more

November 12, 2006 When we woke up this morning it was raining lightly. I could not find my yoga clothes (later discovered that the maid had put them into a hotel bag as dirty laundry, can’t really blame her) so I did my yoga routine in my PJs, substituting balance poses for the more strenuous sun salutations (so that I can wear the PJs again); I later blamed the lack of Surya Namaskar for the prodigious amount of rain. The Coliseum We took a cab to the Coliseum, and it was striking as we crossed from central Rome into the area of ancient Rome. Even in the pouring rain, the sudden appearance of the regal Pine trees (Alex calls them “Umbrella trees”) and the structures of the Forum and the Coliseum. . . Amazing! Our self-guided ... read more

Europe » Vatican City November 11th 2006

11 de Novembre Sono le nove e mezzo We are just finishing colazione (breakfast); we are sitting here at the hotel restaurant, drinking not-very-good coffee, waiting for Carrie. Today is "Vatican Day". We'll start with St. Peter’s Basilica, then go to the Vatican museum, visit the Sistine Chapel, and at 2:30 we have a reservation for an archeological tour of the excavation of the necropolis below St. Peter’s. Our hotel is in the Vaticano area, so it is a very short passeggiata. St Peter’s Basilica - -We just completed a visit to the cupola of St Peter’s Basilica. 320 steps (plus many more to get to the rooftop piazza where the counting started) and all well worth it. Just before the 320 step climb began, we had a fabulous view of the interior of the basilica ... read more

Nov 10th 10am (London time) We are about to land at Heathrow airport, about one hour late but since we have a 4 hour layover, it does not affect our arrival in Rome. I slept but not soundly, and only about 4 hours, so I am bound to be tired later. I dreamt in Italian! “Qualcosa de bere?” - guess I’m thirsty. Can’t wait to get to Rome, but I am even looking forward to the layover at Heathrow. 2:15 (London time) We just boarded the flight to Rome. It is a two hour flight and there is a one hour time change, so we will arrive at 5:30pm. The three hours at Heathrow went quickly - lunch at Pret’s sandwich shop, and I spent 10 minutes on the Internet; sent the kids an email. I ... read more
