Starting to feel like we are being fattened for the slaughter. We have eaten so much. At least 3 to 4 courses each meal and yeah I know, you don't have to eat it but the food is so good it is hard to knock back. Anyhow, off to breakfast..... We have a cruising morning so quite a few take advantage of a sleep in. Lots sitting in the lounge watching our progress up the river, some reading, computing and sleeping. Very lazy morning. We do lunch then onto a bus for a quick trip to our next outing. A ride on the Ardeche steam train up into the hills. All herded into open carriages with vey hard seats then we start the climb up to a station with a very long name. Beautiful scenery on ... read more

Same same but different. Breakfast then onto another bus to visit a truffle farm. Oops, forgot our listening devices so had to bolt back to the ship to get them. Then we start and our tour guide has a distinct American twang. Explains she came to France as a young girl, met a Frenchman and married him, now 30 years later she is our French speaking American tour guide. She starts off by saying that we will have a lovely tour of the Lavendar farm (another option that we didn't choose). Oh oh, did we get the wrong bus somehow. Then in the next breath she tells us that the truffle farm is a fantastic place to visit. At the same time, one of the buses turns righ and we keep going. She then tells us ... read more

We arrived at Chateauneuf-du-Pape last night. Our mooring is 3km from the town and this morning we have free time. Some rode bikes but they also had a mini bus doing shuttle trips. Not a lot to see in town other than an old chateau on the hill (ruins) and lots and lots of wine dealers. This area grows and makes a very nice red which is tightly controlled in how it can be grow, picked and then bottled. We walked up to the chateau, which was rather steep but great views when you made it to the top. Looking down at the vineyards and crop fields it was very pretty. Back to the ship for lunch then off to our organised winery tour which also took us back into town and to the chateau again. ... read more

Not going to give food details today after last night's degustation.... Anyhow, wake up to another blue sky day, and high temperature prediction. We walk the city and papal palace today. Interesting old information that we hadn't heard before. Up stairs, down stairs, into old Rome, out of old Rome, getting the picture yet.... Finish off by going the light the book shop to get out and eventually back to reality.. Do the Pont D'Avignon (for all those Emma wiggle fans) and then back to the ship for more food. Today is special coz they have a baked leg of ham. Special....... Lunch with Rose done then Chris is off to the Pont Du Gard and I am off to the laundromat... it has to be done so I'm happy to take one for the team.. ... read more

New day, new things to see. Today we have a full day of visiting the Camargue where we will see Bulls doing what bulls do and special Camargue horses doing whatever they do. On the bus with our picnic lunch bags to an area we have just left. That is we go back past Arles to the Camargue region and the Mediterranean Sea. Hmm, how does that work you might ask, so did nearly everyone on the bus. Ahh, the joys of an organised tour. Any hoo, off we go. Get to the horses/bull farm and get ushered onto the back of trailers behind a John Deere tractor. Out into the paddocks with horse people following. Beautiful looking horses and the riders look well in control. Get to a paddock and they move the bulls into ... read more

Little bit of a sleep in today. Our first tour starts at 0900. Do food again then onto our bus to an olive farm and then to the asylum where Vincent Van Gogh spent a year just before he committed suicide. Olive farm had their own press which they then serviced all the locals as well as their trees come harvest. Interesting to see how they harvest and then press for oil. They also had a commercial kitchen where they produce jams, tapinades and other stuff. Very interesting visit. Onto St Remy to the asylum. Van Gogh spent a year here and painted over 200 paintings in that time. We saw places where he based his paintings from. Interesting to see that side of his works. Back to the ship for lunch theN free time to ... read more

A good sleep for our first night in the ship but we have an early start so that is a bit of a bugger. our tour to Marseille starts at 0800 so early breakfast and off. We are on the big red bus (groups broken up for ease of tour guides). Our guide speaks well so she has our attention, but as usual with tour guides, once they get the microphone in their hand they don't stop talking. Arrive in Marseille and start our walk. After about 20 steps all we get in our earpieces is heavy breathing. A bit off putting as at least 3 around us mention the fact she is almost putting the sky breathing on for us. But no, as we walk anywhere we get the huffing and puffing in our ear. ... read more

Woke and finished packing the bags. Went down to the market at the front door and got some prosciutto and salami along with fresh bread. This with some cheese we bought earlier was a nice way to start the day. Owner asked us when we were vacating the room, must have someone else booked in. Asked him if we could store our bags anywhere and he offered an apartment on the 3rd floor which was in the middle of being renovated. Interesting to see the old and compare to what we stayed in. What was a maze is being turned into an open space with obviously modern facilities. Wandered off to do some shopping then back to get our bags before catching the bus to the airport. Enough time to have one last drink looking out ... read more

Europe » Monaco June 23rd 2016

Well, into another country already. Up early, Sweden lost the soccer so we had mournful singing most of the night. Up early for a walk along the promenade by the sea. Lots of rubbish everywhere and lots of council workers cleaning it up. quite a few sleeping bodies on the beach as well. Bought some nice fresh fruit from the market outside our door. Then off to our boat to Monaco. Sea was like glass. And ever so clear. Cruised along the coast and arrived in the French harbour which is just beside the big port of Monaco. Short walk into the main town and found our way up the very steep hill to the Prince's palace. Disturbing thing is they have defribulators placed in strategic places on the way up...... Got there in plenty of ... read more

Quieter day today. Caught up on some sleep then had a face call with the family. Great to speak with Charlie and Pippa just before they went to bed. Charlie had problems working out why we had blue skies and sunshine when it was dark and cold in Melbourne. Left that one with his parents....... Out for a walk and through the backstreets passed a cafe where 2 people had a really nice looking Charcuterie plate. Back pedalled and had one of those with a cheese platter to follow as our lunch (with a cheeky little Rose). Great way to start the day. Found a restaurant that was recommended for dinner so booked a table for tonight (had been told it was hard to get a booking). No problems, in for the second sitting at 2100. ... read more
