We crossed over the Malaysian border on the East coast and moved quickly up the country via several trains including an overnight train. This was an overnight train with a difference though. We got on at a place called Hat Yai (after being informed that we were on the wrong platform by a drunk Aussie) only to find that a Monk was sat in our seat. After the hostess asked him to move we sat down for a long journey. We were instantly offered food which was really tasty and we spent a nice half hour trying to decide if the hostess was indeed a hostess or a host. Steph still maintains that 'she' was a she whereas I think 'she' was in fact a he!! Much to our amusement/ horror after our meal 'she' sat ... read more

We left the National Park via the train that runs up through the jungle. As such the scenery out the window was beautiful. We passed through miles upon miles oflush green rain forest, crossed over wide curving rivers and trundled alongside towering white cliffs covered in foliage. We then made our way to Kota Bharu, a small town with not all that much to do, where we stayed for the night before travelling to the Perhentian Islands. These were absolute paradise with white long beaches, waving palm trees and crystal clear sea that was as warm as a bath...sometimes too warm to be as cooling and refreshing as you needed after lying baking on the beach (even under the sun umbrella it was too hot!) We enjoyed three days on the island relaxing and reading. I ... read more

We took a bus from Jeruntut to the small village in the middle of nowhere that had the jetty for the boat to the national park - and essential part of the park experience according to the lonely planet! so after an early start and some good organisation we arrived at 8.30 to be told that there was no official boat until 2pm, not a good start! but a local boatman for about 2 pounds extra agreed to take us, so we had a long boat all to ourselves! it was a beautiful (but bum-numbing) 3 hour boat ride into the park, we passed fisherman and local children in the river which was really cool, we also passed lots of other long boats that unlike ours were full, we got waves and a few smiles alongside ... read more

Our first stop in Malaysia was on an Island off the South East Coast. We got there by first crossing the border by bus from Singapore to a town called Mersing. Our first border crossing didn't go well as I'd misplaced my departure card into my file that was stored away in the coach hold. Without this I had to get taken into the Customs office where I was asked who I was and had to prove that I was the holder of the passport...This was quite difficult as the photo on it was a hideous one taken in 2004, I'd like to think that I look rather different now!! Meanwhile Steph was frantically pacing in the foyer hoping our bus hadn't left without us! We made it though and were soon on the boat to ... read more

We landed late afternoon to Singapore and were instantly dazzled by the airport, took one look around and knew our fortunes had changed after India! The place was spotless (no touts!) and linked by an underground system (MRT) to the city. We instantly loved the place. We found the hostel with ease, perfectly situated in the Bugis Area (the previous red light district until the government buldozed them out to completely renovate the area) which was close to all the major sights. On our first night we eagerly set off in search of some good food - no more curries for us! We found perfection in an extravagant Japanese Buffet which was holding a seafood special (and a chocolate fountain). We tried everything from peppered crab, prawns, sushi, sashima (raw fish) and to chocolate dipped Marshmallows ... read more

We spent a day traveling to Shimla on a supposedly deluxe bus, but it was more comfortable than our previous bus experience. One funny moment of the trip was when the bus had emptied for a refreshment break, but I, faffing was still when it drove around the corner with me asking the driver where we were going!! I made it out though and met a lost looking Steph who was wondering where I'd gone! When we got off the bus at Shimla we were quickly surrounded by Touts, they didn't seem to respond to Steph's 'Back Off!' We managed to jump in a taxi though who took us to our hotel. Here our room was below ground and strangely full of mirrors, it's most disconcerting being able to see yourself 5 different times when you're ... read more

When we got into the bus station we got a tuk tuk with a couple from Durham that were on the bus with us to a small guest house in Old Manali, a quieter part of town. Our guest house ended up being up a winding dirt track set behind a small row of shops. But for 200 rupees (Less than 3 pounds) a night we weren't going to complain! After a sleep to recover from our hellish journey we ventured into town. We went into a tourist Adventure company but sadly due to it being out of season here most of the mountain passes were closed due to snow. We booked instead onto a day trip to the Rohtang Pass and to Solang Valley for the following day. That evening I tried the special trout ... read more

The journey from Varanasi to Haridwar was a long one. We arrived in the city of pilgrims and festivals at 3am. After a short attempt to find the Bus Station we gave up and opted for a taxi to Rishikesh, town of white water rafting, hippies and yoga! The driver dropped us early at a different bridge than we asked for, then tried to say that we hadn't paid enough. To this we said, 'yes we have, stop trying to cheat us' and slammed the door. After a 22 hour train journey, limited sleep and the prospect of trying to find a hotel we were a force to be reckoned with! Don't mess with us! We walked for ages trying to find a place to stay, carrying our far too heavy bags with us, crossing bridges ... read more

Our first overnight train trip went fairly smoothly although it was pretty crowded but it was really fun, people were passing through the carriage all the time saying 'chai chai' or 'coffee coffee' so it was always quite lively! we arrived into varanasi early in the morning and on time pretty much and were met by our hotel pickup who bundles us into a tuk tuk bags and all and we were zoomed across the city! it was manic and noisy, like all the other cities really but it was a big wake up call that early!! due to the narrow streets near the river and the ghats where our hotel was we had to get out and walk the last 10 minuites - we passed open urinals, cows, lots of rubbish and a dead dog! ... read more

We've had little time to write our blog...hence telling you about 3 places at once after we've already left them! Here goes! We left Jaisalmer with Steph feeling a bit better and looking forward to an ice cream from a shop we found in the Lonely Planet guide book. Hopes were dashed when we continued zooming out of the town. When we asked our driver, 'No ice cream then?!' he screeched to a halt with his head in his hands apologising profusely! We assured him that it was ok whilst mentally knocking a hundred rupees off his tip! Forgetting ice cream is not forgiven lightly!! The journey took around 6 hours but we finally made it to our next destination, the Blue City of Jodphur. The hotel here was the best so far, simply because it ... read more
