We left Langkawi on the organised transport we had booked to take us over the Thai border to Satun the nearest entry point to Thailand for us. While we were in Langkawi we learnt about the new regulations concerning the Thai visa which messed up our plans a little.. because we were doing a land border crossing you can now only get a 15 day visa instead of the previous 30 days. This meant that we would only be able to do a fraction of what we had planned so we set our sights on the Krabi area and decided to spend our 15 days soaking up the sun on the many beaches in this province. The border crossing went fine, the ferry trip there was very painless with The Mummy video to keep us amused ... read more

From the Cameron Highlands we got back to our original route to Pulau Pangkor, an island just off the west coast town of Lumut. After a bus-bus-ferry-taxi ride taking nearly the whole day we pulled up in Pangkor along with a million other Malay & Chinese holidaymakers and were surprised to see a million also leaving the island presumably after just coming for a day trip. We'd planned this part of our trip quite badly in our eagerness to come here and had arrived on Chinese New Year Day, not a good time to go anywhere it seems. As soon as we'd got dumped by one of the cool pink minibuses in Teluk Nipan, the main town on the island, our first attempts at finding a room where in vain. Everywhere seemed either full or those ... read more

Off we set at 8am in the morning bound for the alternative destination (to the one we'd hoped for anyway) of the Cameron Highlands. As we said we had planned to go here at some point anyway, it's just we'd planned it for when we returned in a few months so no harm done by doing it now instead. The coach journey was very painless and we arrived in the beautiful Cameron Highlands mid afternoon, instantly grateful of the temperature when we stepped off the bus as it was much cooler than we'd been used to in KL. Another bonus was that the hostel we'd intended in staying at had sent down a minibus to collect any new arrivals so we headed on up the hill to Father's Guest House and checked into one of their ... read more

Our flight from Melbourne went without a hitch.. well almost, if you don't count the lady in front of us on the escalator to the plane getting her sari stuck in the mechanics, falling over then causing a backlog as everyone else on the escalator behind her (including us) fell on top of each other in a heap at the bottom.. quite funny and thankfully noone was hurt! The flight was probably our best yet, we enjoyed great views of Australia as we flew over it, a beautiful sunset and Quantas have to be the top airline for their service and what you get .... at the beginning of the flight we all got a little card which listed the timetable of events during the flight plus the food we would receive for our 2 meals! ... read more

Sad to have left the luxury of the Lees fabulous house we set off on a 7 hour bus ride to Noosa. The bus ride was actually fine but we were confused that we had driven past Noosa on our way to the Australia Zoo a week before and the total journey had only taken 3 hours so it just goes to show how much longer the bus rides are than a straight run in a car. Noosa is a lovely but a touristy beach resort which is dripping with money. There are fabulous beaches here but by far the most spectacular things are the multi million dollar houses that line the riverbeds along the town. These houses are just jaw dropping and the sort of place we could really see ourselves aiming for if we ... read more

Sophie had last been to Bundaberg on her previous visit to Australia in 2004 when Debbie & Rich had just moved into their new house. Since then Debbie (Sophie's friend from the UK) had been keeping Sophie up to date with the 'rennos' on the house and we were both looking forward to seeing what had been done, catching up with the new family member and swimming in that pool that had been promised to be in situ for the next visit! Debbie picked us up from the coach station on the 23rd December after our 16 hour journey from Mission Beach and we were very excited at the prospect of spending a few weeks in the luxury of a 'proper' house. From the moment we got into the house we were made to feel right ... read more

We arrived in Cairns mid evening and were immediately hit by the heat and humidity of the city which was quite welcome after the rain in Alice. We checked into our hostel and set straight off to the city centre to 'enjoy' our first free meal at the Woolshed where where we were to have many more meals during our stay... The Woolshed is a dubious pub/restaurant where many hostels offer either a free meal or an upgrade for a cheap price. If we were 18 years old then this place would probably seem like heaven on earth with wet t-shirt nights, jock nights and other such fun and frovility but, (sadly) we are now 30 and haven't come travelling for all night binge sessions in Australia's answer to Ibiza so we set ourselves into the ... read more

We arrived in Alice Springs and were a bit disappointed that we'd left Sydney in glorious sunshine and arrived in the Red Centre where it was pouring down with rain.. we thought it wasn't supposed to rain in the desert! We had our 3 day Uluru trip booked for the following day so spent the afternoon sheltering from the rain, exploring Alice Springs town centre (not really that much to explore) and preparing ourselves for a very early start of 5am the next day. We got up with no problem the next morning and were very excited to be going to explore the centre of Australia along with the other 22 people in our group and Mark our guide. Off we headed to Kings Canyon, the first stop for our journey into the red desert. On ... read more

We were more than a bit sad to be leaving New Zealand, especially when the weather had just turned into gorgeous sunshine, but after a good flight we landed in sunny Sydney and were immediately happy that we would no longer need all the alpaca jumpers we'd been lugging around with us for months! As a 30th birthday present to us both Sophie's family had booked us into a posh hotel for 3 nights which was such luxury after 2 months in the campervan and to make it even better we both got the surprise of our lives when we arrived at the hotel and none other than Sophie's sister was sitting in reception waiting for us to arrive! It was just so exciting to see her and Sophie immediately tried to catch up on 6 ... read more

Keen to do some more walking after our experiences in Abel Tasman we headed from the very West of the South Island at Greymouth then to the centre and Arthurs Pass National Park. The drive there yet again was a very scenic one especially when you travel through the actual pass itself and the enormous viaduct that was built to make access across the island much easier. At the viewpoint overlooking the viaduct we had our first Kea experience, these are large parrots that live in the snowy higher ground around the South Island. They are very inquisitive and cheeky and as soon as you turn your back on them they will be on your car trying to pull over whatever they can lay their beaks on... aerials, window rubber surrounds, windscreen wipers etc so you ... read more
