**Our apologies for the photos not matching the chronology of the text. So begins the end of our journey. We returned to Bangkok's airport around one in the morning Monday night, and took a taxi to Khao San Road, the backpacker mecca in Bangkok. After the success in Ko Lanta, we decided that shared bathrooms and fanned rooms for $6 a night were worth the savings. Though we had been told we could wander down the road asking for rooms, we had bought one of these budget places online to avoid schlepping while lost at two or three in the morning. At two am we were dropped off with a ton of bags in a dark, quiet, shady Bangkok neighborhood (the one Hangover ll takes place in) with instructions that we only needed to walk a ... read more

Curiosity got the best of us, and we said farewell to our island paradise to take a boat to check out another (less popular) island. Ko Lanta is significantly larger than Ko Phi Phi and has more local Thais than tourists. It's very chill, so things shut down around 10PM and nothing's crowded. Our 1.5 day stay was the perfect amount of time to soak up this island. We lucked out by finding a cheap and very cool guesthouse (with our own personal lizard) just steps away from where our boat docked as the sun set. Bags down, it was time to explore. We walked past an art gallery and both stopped at a giant, beautiful abstract painting. How much? $75 and our first art purchase was made! We expect offers of $2000 or more for ... read more

Sa-wat-dee-ka (Hello)! We have not strayed far from where we last left off, but have lots to tell you about since our last post! First off, using the money we had saved with our new seaside accommodations, we took a 6 hour snorkel excursion to Phi Phi Ley, a nearby island of lagoons and limestone cliffs shooting out of the water. Our snorkeling excusion included stops at a monkey beach (literally a beach full of monkeys where you could feed the monkeys bread and bananas), snorkeling and swimming in a few lagoons, playing on Maya Beach (where "The Beach" was filmed), and watching sunset from the boat. All awesome! The funny part was how many of us they managed to cram into this small longtail boat. Most of the boat is covered by a canopy with ... read more

Day 3: Bangkok Extremes When you last left our heros (us), we were in Bangkok, having been led around for a night by our ex-pat friend Ruthie. Next, on day 3, we wandered around the modern Bangkok neighborhoods, taking in the mix of quaint and cosmopolitan. Our lunch was an assortment of items requested on the street via gestures and pointing. First was pad-thai with a side of iced-tap-water. How many locals do you need to see drink it before you decide to ignore everything you've been told about Thai tap water, and take a sip yourself? Keep in mind you are hot and the food is spicy. Second was dumplings sold off the back of a motorcycle. For dessert, we had some unspecified funnel-cake-esque corn-balls doused in sweetened condensed milk. In Bangkok, anything that isn't ... read more

Day 2 (2/8/12): Urban Hiking Happy Birthday to Andrew's Mom! Day 2 was exhausting and quite the adventure. We rose at 6:30 to run in a public park at dawn. The jog to get there, through crowded rush-hour streets and smells, was harder than the actual park run. As expected, the park was chock-full of older folks doing Tai-Chi in groups. Very cool. On the way back we picked up some breakfast-curry (read: normal curry, eaten at breakfast), onion & noodle soup of some kind, and pomegranate juice. Though Julia has been trying all the food here, her preferred diet consists of fruit, more fruit, fruit juice, coffee, and ice cream. Next up was massages again, of course. It had been over twelve hours since our last ones, so we were ready. The massage tends to ... read more

THAILAND: Day 1ish (2/7/12) Well, we did it: We reached the other side of the world. Didn't even have to dig a hole to get here! Just a 2 hour flight to Chicago, a 13 hour flight to Tokyo, and a 7 hour flight to Bangkok! Weird airplane food, a guide book, several movies, and a few naps, and we were there in no time! We got to our hotel at 2am and were soo impressed by the luxuries that come with budget traveling here. Our hotel, The Atlanta, is this quirky historic hotel just a side street off all the action. It has a big pool, tropical gardens, a large turtle, free wifi, and an eclectic restaurant attached with great deals for guests of the hotel. Not to forget, our basic room has three full ... read more
