Serendipity: Bangkok to Isan: Having originally planned to head up North out of Bangkok, to Laos via Chiang Mai, the October floods changed our plans - and led us to experience a truly unique part of the country known as Isan, or the kingdom's Northeast. Staying at Gecko Villa near Udon Thani:: We arrived in Udon Thani by train after a night trip up. At the station, "Khun Ten" from Gecko Villa was waiting to collect us and drive us to his Thailand holiday villa , set among rice paddies in the countryside out of town.
