| 19th July 2006 Colin | Interesting Bruce... - From: Pearl Harbour I also felt a little 'out of phase' at the Arizona. It's an emotional tour, but through my historical retrospectoscope maybe not as moving as for someone who was alive on Dec 7th. I felt quite differently during a visit to Ground Zero in NYC this past May. Having been to the top of the WTC before and now looking at the big hole in the ground, I thought about what had happened there and the lives lost, knowing that those events resulted in me spending 18 months in Iraq and A'stan - it was all I could do to not break down in public. No disrespect to the people who lost their lives at PH, but most were military, on a military base or ship at a time when much of the world had been at war for a year and a half. At the WTC, those civilians were at their everyday jobs and completely unsuspecting. Not to mention the police and firemen who entered the burning buildings knowing they could lose everything at any moment, but still trying to rescue someone. Both moving places, but evocative of different feelings within me. |

The drills with the blackout masks sound hard- but what a great way to train- wish I knew where I could access that level of training over here. Winter is well and truly here now and my last dive was wrapped up snug in my drysuit with the water temp a balmy 5 degrees (yep- in the sea!!)- viz was good tho (gotta be positive!) I'm not sure how much sea diving I will get in from now on tho -the weather conditions are very variable and it has been getting really windy as well as much colder - I guess I'll have to stay wet in Horsea -doing a bit of DM-ing and looking forward to the spring! I'm glad to see that someone is still providing training in the skills everyone who gets in a SCUBA rig should be getting. I've been exactly in your shoes and felt as you do - in my Basic Open Water course. My Basic instructor was an ex-UDT man and we had to accomplish just those tasks in order to get our Basic card (plus a 25m buddy swim with one fin each and one snorkel - ever buddy breathe with a snorkel?). At the time I was new to SCUBA and thought everyone went through the same to earn their card! Now you know why I avoid diving with non-military trained divers. Again: well done! PS - can you see the gills when you look in the mirror yet? |

R&R was great for me, as is started with diving in Monterey Bay, which is never disappointing. The rebreather course went well, but I will take a refresher after I get home in Dec on my way to either Hawai'i or Oz since it will have been 5 months since the intial course with no bottom time in the interim. Seiko arrived in mint condition, no problems at all. It met me in Qalat, where we are now located. All the best! |
