Today we say goodbye to Dunfeld and transfer to the Humala River Lodge in Songimvelo Game Reserve. By 9 we have eaten and our bags are packed into the two vans. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive almost due east. I plead for the shotgun seat this trip to ease the misery on my knees and behind. Bakkies has a treat in store for us. He stops by a local chocolate shop with an interesting specialty. You get to pick a a chocolate cup (and by this I mean a small egg-cup-sized cup made entirely of chocolate) with the choices being dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate. The cup is then filled by hand from a milk chocolate fountain. Very tricky to eat, but absolutely delicious! Bakkies provides his usual entertaining dialogue on the ... read more

We wake up in Dunfeld Estates to another fantastic day. Perfectly blue sky. We have been so lucky with the weather on this trip. We can now see where we have ended up. The location is idyllic: a circle of cottages around a central pond surrounded by tall trees. The air is filled with the sound of birds. Buffet breakfast at Dunfeld. Standard fare with an egg station. But there's pap en sous, which makes the whole thing African. Bakkies brings the van out back and we pile in for our day's adventure. He starts with a tour of Dunfeld estates. It's absolutely huge, and actually comprises three separate adjoining operations, all family-owned, one of them devoted exclusively to equestrian pursuits. One yearly visitor is apparently Bruce Murray, Anne's brother. The roads around Dunfeld are lined ... read more

Today we will travel from Cape Town to Johannesburg, and thence to a resort named Dunfeld. Unfortunately I am quite sick today. The cold/flu has its hooks firmly into me. But we soldier on. JP drives us to the airport and we say our good-byes. JP has been our almost constant companion for a week and has done his best to make our visit to Cape Town memorable in every way. Plane flight from Cape Town to Joberg on Kulula Air. Moment of panic when "now departing for Lanseria" is announced in the plane. But that is only the name of the destination airport. The plane is an older 737 and knee space is problematic for me. It's also apparently a super-economy flight, and you don't even get water unless you pay for it. I am ... read more

Today is highly anticipated by us. On tap is a visit to the townships, the shantytown areas just outside Cape Town. Breakfast close by, after which are transferred to the care of Godfrey, born and raised in the township of Langa, our destination. He tells us, "So far, you've seen one side of the coin. Now you're going to see the other." On the drive, Godfrey provides the historical context to the townships. These are the areas where blacks and some coloureds were ghettoized under apartheid. In some cases (such as the case of district 6, discussed yesterday), entire neighbourhoods were moved to the townships. Godfrey also explains the importance of tribal identity, passed on through the father. The majority of blacks in this region are Xhosa. Now, as you may know, the first consonant in ... read more

JP, back in the saddle, picks us up at 7:30. Today's itinerary calls for us to drive to Hermanus, a beautiful area about 2 hours out of Cape Town famous for its rugged coasts and for its whales—at certain times of the year, but not now. However, when JP hears that we did not manage to get up Table Mountain yesterday, he proposes a complete change of plans, feeling that today's good weather and tomorrow's forecast of cloud argue in favour of doing Table Mountain today. It is, after all, perhaps the number one must-see attraction in Cape Town. It is so agreed. We have breakfast at a local restaurant then head for the city. By the time we reach the cable-car station, however, a couple of the members of our party are feeling quite ill. ... read more

On the road at 7:30. Kobus, whom we met our first day here, is subbing for JP as our driver and tour guide today. It is a beautiful day once again, and we have an ambitious schedule ahead. We drive directly to the Waterfront. Again trouble finding a parking spot in the garage, probably because of Mothers' Day. They have an interesting innovation in this parking garage. Each spot is monitored by a detector, and a red or green light indicates whether the spot is taken. So you can scan your eyes around the garage, looking for green lights. In addition, the data is rolled up and displayed at every intersection; e.g., 5 spots available to the left, 19 to the right. And outside on the street before you enter the garage, you can see before ... read more

Pickup at 7:30. It is another glorious day of sunshine without a cloud in the sky. We drive down to Camp's Bay, the area we previously visited on the tour bus. This is one of the more exclusive addresses in town, where beautiful homes sit perched on rocky cliffs. We have breakfast at a little restaurant on the main drag near the beach from which we can watch people walking their dogs and jogging by against a backdrop of rolling surf. Our first stop of the day is a zoo called the World of Birds. We stroll through a seemingly endless succession of outdoor cages, some open to the sky and some not, depending on the bird. The variety is incredible and the bird sounds blend into a constant cacaphonic backdrop. Some other animals are represented, ... read more

Today is all about the wine! We get under way at 7:30 and head to a nearby winery called Durbanville Hills for breakfast. We are seated on an outside patio with a great view of the surrounding area. I have eggs Benedict again, but this time with springbok carpaccio. After breakfast we take a stroll outside along manicured paths that feature indigenous plants. One of these is an unassuming little ground plant called fynbos, which is apparently unique to the Cape Town microclimate. (Yesterday we saw handicrafts made from it.) We are up fairly high and the air is crisp and clear. Around us on three sides are rolling hills spotted with low vegetation and the occasional tree bent by the cool winds from the Atlantic. We can see Table Mountain clearly in the distance with ... read more

It has rained heavily overnight, a bit of relief for the drought. The morning is cool and cloudy. JP picks us up at 8 am. The plan today is visit the Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront in Cape Town City Centre, while keeping an eye on the weather to see if it would be appropriate to tackle Table Mountain later in the day. First it's breakfast at a nearby restaurant. Eggs Benedict are always a treat. After breakfast we pile back into the van and head for the V&A Waterfront. You might think, by the way, that the name should be Victoria and Albert, but it's named after Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria, who was the first British royal to visit South Africa in 1860. On the way, JP points out a couple of ... read more

We are travelling to South Africa in a party of three: myself, wife Violet and friend Karen. Our itinerary, which has been arranged by Go Touchdown Travel, includes one week with Cape Town as a home base, after which we will travel to the northern part of the country for a week in and near the major game reserves. Our route is Ottawa-Toronto on Westjet, then Toronto-Amsterdam (7 hours) and Amsterdam-Cape Town (11 hours) on KLM. The entire trip is 27 hours. The flights are long but relatively comfortable. Happily, both planes are newer 777s, which have acceptable legroom for me. We are well treated and well fed by KLM. For me, it is a chance to catch up on movies that I have wanted to see but would not be of interest to my dear ... read more
