And so we arrived in Kerala. Nowhere to stay, no idea of where we would stay. But at worst we could sleep on the beach, and the beach is so stunningly beautiful it would not have been a bad option. We loaded our packs on our backs, and walked down from the bus stand to the beach; and there we got our first real glimpse of the Arabian Sea in all its glory. And it was so hot, and the sea itself was hotter than I usually have my bath water! And once again, we fell on our feet. Within about 5 minutes, we had found a guesthouse about 50 yards from the beach, and knocked down the owner (not literally!) from 700 rupees to 600 rupees for the first night. A big roon, a big ... read more

Just a bit about this place. Lonely Planet is fairly scathing about Kanya (the reason for all the different spellings is (a) I can't always remember the correct one, and (b) neither can the Indians). They are wrong - it really is well worth a visit, and we are so glad we went. Our original choice after Madurai was Ramesvaran, a peninsula between India and Sri Lanka. We only changed our plans because we would have had to return to Madurai again, and spent more time there before we could get to our next stop. Madness, of course - this is India, after all! Our hotel was right next to the temple down by the beach. And at 4.30 every morning, they started blaring Hindu chants from a massive speaker system; enough to rattle the windows ... read more

The tip of India, that is, though in places India is just one big tip. We went to a travel agent in Madurai on Monday and asked about trains to Kanniyakumari, the Southernmost point of India. "Sorry, the train today is full" "But we want to go tomorrow" Trains only on a Monday". OK, what are the alternatives. "You can get a bus. It runs overnight, about 6 hours. 250 Rupees each" (Thats just over £3). "Where do we get the bus?" "It will pick you up from your hotel about 9:30 pm". So we booked for Tuesday night. Madurai was 'exciting', but if you told a Scot you were planning to go there, he would probably reply "Mad you are; aye". Tuesday night we checked out of TM Lodge, and sat waiting for the bus. ... read more

An interesting last day in Madurai. We decided to visit the Gandhi Museum, which is a couple of km from the centre. We caught a tuktuk, and headed off. It was a very thought-provoking place; we, ot at least I, hadn't fully realised just how badly the British behaved over 2 centuries. I felt like apologising to all the Indians who were there. We decided to use a bicycle rickshaw for the return to the centre. A really old guy (he looked about 70) approached us and asked if we wanted a rickshaw, and we said yes. He led us off to where he was parked, and in we got. The further we went, the more exhausted the poor guy got, until he had to get off his bike and push. We got off too, and ... read more

Our second (and last) day in Madurai. Spent yesterday evening just walking and absorbing. We have booked a night bus to Kanniyakumari on the Southern most tip of India. Leave about 10, get there about 4am tomorrow. in time to see the sunrise over the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. I must try not to use the word awesome too much! Hope we can find somewhere to stay!... read more

And Mad it is! We arrived 4.30 this morning, on a sleeper bus after leaving Pondicherry at 9:30 last night. Quite an experience, a double birth over the seats. But on Indian roads, you get thrown about so much you can't sleep much, you are just concentrating on not being thron to the floor! We were ejected onto a street somewhere, we knew not where, in the centre of Madurai. We were immediately descended on by mosquitos and tuktuk drivers in roughly equal numbers - hard to tell which were more irritating! Eventually we asked a tuktuk driver to take us to the street where the budget hostels are. He told us it was quite a long way, and it took about 10 minutes through a maze of streets. Off he shot with his money, and ... read more

On Wednesday, our 2nd day in Mamma, we were taken to a local restaurant in the Indian quarter, far from the tourist area (in essence if not geography!), and had a real Indian food experience. Masala Dosa cooked on a hot stone, egg poori, which was a mix of egg, tomato, onion and garlic all cooked together on the stone and chopped up. It was all sublime! We were the only Westerners there. We drank mineral water (to be on the safe side!), and with extra dosas and sambar, the bill was just over 1 pound! Why go down the tourist strip? (When we went for breakfast that morning and I asked for something of the 'Indian Breakfast' section of the menu, the waiter told me there was nothing Indian available!) That evening, we bought a ... read more

Actually spendig the night in KLIA was much nicer that staying in Tune hotel the night before, A word of advice to anyone thinking of using this chain - DON'T!!. We found a couple of benches in the viewing area, and by about 11 we were sound asleep. Unfortunately they closed the viewing area at half past midnight, so we had to move! We found somewhere else, but getting to sleep near a snoring Japanese gentleman proved tricky for a number of people. So I woke him uo (politely) and told him to stop snoring. And, typically Japanese, he bowed and said thankyou! We woke at 5am, washed and cleaned our teeth, and shuffled off to the Air India checkin. You should have seen it!! About 150 people, each with what seemed to be half the ... read more

Actually, we are now back in Malaysia. Hair-raising 6 1/2 hour drive from Solo to Surabaya yesterday, because no trains on Sunday! Flight to KL left about 10pm, and as Malaysia is 1 hour ahead, we landed about 1am local time! We (Me, Baska, Tom and Liz) sat outside Tune hotel (grimsville!) drinking beer until about 4:30. The tried to sleep in a stifling room until 6:30. Got the bus to the international terminal to see if we could change our ticket for Chennai from tomorrow to today, as we didn't think it worthwhiloe to go to KL for such a short time. But today's flight had already left, 2 hours ahead of schedule. Why? we asked. "They are firing rockets in Chennai" came the somewhat enigmatic reply. "Is tomorrow's flight as scheduled?" "yes". We decided ... read more

Here we are in Java! We flew to Yogjakarta, and having met some natives on the plane, got a taxi ti Malioboro. Quikly found a more than acceptable hotel, and checked in. Breakfast at a street stall, then horse drawn carriage to the sultan's palace. Looked around this, then hired 2 bicycle rickshaw drivers (the normal form of transport here!) for 3 hours - at $3 for each rickshaw! Visited the bird market and a marionette maker. Back to the hotel, then out for beers and dinner. Next day by bus to Borobodur, site of the biggest Buddhist temple in the world. Stayed in a lovely place looking over the temple. Next day after leisurely breakfast we decided to go by bus (turned out to be 3 buses!) to a village just below Mount Murapi, the ... read more
