Well I'm off... the first stop is the most dangerous part of my trip, Jersey. I have a morning flight from Newark to Beijing so I decided to fly to Newark the day before, already it paid off First some good news, I did not got pulled out of airport security for additional screening! That is only the 4th time in like 15 flights i havent, and i was all ready to refuse the body scanners and hold up the line. I'm glad i decided to fly to newark the day before cause my flight was delayed twice for a total of 4 1/2 hours. but for once i really didnt care. i was so tired that when we were landing i woke up and thought we were just about to takeoff. Well the next time ... read more

First, i apologize for not updating in awhile, with only a few days left I have been doing a lot of last minute stuff. With all my bad luck in the past, one important task I had to do is register my trip with US embassies in each location. In the past, this was much harder since you would have to go to each embassy but now they have a program called Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) that allows you to register online (https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/). The main reason I find this important is because they can contact you when an emergency happens in the country you are in or going to along with services like reissuing a passport if you lose it, putting you in contact with legal services if you need it, and much more smaller ... read more

Netbook: Macbook Air 11" Since I will not be bringing a cell phone and most places have internet, I decided to risk it and bring a netbook. The thing truly weighs next to nothing. I also got Skype and a headset Ipod and headphones Flashlights: I have a Petzl headlamp that has a low light setting, high beam setting, and a red strobe light setting. Waterproof bag: This can protect my camera from sand and water. I think I might still buy another one though just in case Camera Extender: One of the down sides of traveling by yourself is that you can't ever really trust a stranger to take your picture without running off with your camera. So I bought a XShot camera extender that easily attaches to your camera and you hold the other ... read more

99% of travel websites will say something like "pack half of what you want to take and take twice the money." While I know the importance of traveling light, I think you should take what you want and will make you comfortable. For me, its a curling iron and hair dryer. Ok, thats not really what I take cause i have a shaved head, but i'm not the lightest packer in the world. Basically, I have been trying to only get lightweight and quick drying stuff that is multi-purpose. Here is the gear I am taking and living off of for the next 9-10 months (i will constantly be changing this entry before i leave and will be buying stuff at the places i'm going) - Backpack: Osprey Waypoint 85 - This is a 85 liter ... read more

While I am working on getting everything I need for my trip, I figured I would tell everyone about some of my interesting airport or airplane stories. I dont know if its my good looks or my great personality, but people seem to have health problems around me. One time I was waiting for my next flight in New York and was surrounded by doctors from India when a 90 plus year old man started having serious medical issues nearby. All the doctors quickly got up to help out a few sections over when an elderly black lady came up and sat in the empty seats. I tried to politely tell her people were sitting there that they were just helping out but she could have my seat (I really only had good intentions). She looked ... read more

Europe » Italy February 23rd 2011

Well my trip to Italy was very last minute. In fact, I had to renew my 3 month visa in Israel so I went to the airport very first thing in the morning and asked for a flight leaving soon and they had one to Rome in an hour. So I was off. My plan was to spend a few days in Rome and maybe see another city too. First, I loved Rome. It's a city that has something for everyone. I just started walking around the first day but I found myself stopping at almost every building finding something I loved. I wish I could rave about the food there like everyone else but I have an unhealthy fear of tomatoes and anything with tomatoes in it, including pizza, pasta and almost every other ... read more

April: China, Hong Kong May: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia June: Thailand, India, Portugal July: Spain, Greece, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic August: Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia September: (first 2 weeks open), Ireland, Scotland, England October: Brazil, Argentina November: Chile, Bolivia December: Peru Some of the changes I made to save some time was to buy a cheap flight from Spain to Greece instead of seeing southern France and Italy because I've been to both countries already. I am also trying to decide if I would rather see Bulgaria, Romania, & Croatia after Greece or if I want to find a flight from Estonia to Ireland and see Scotland, England, and Wales. I might be able to do both and extend my trip about a month. If anyone has been to these countries or has ... read more

One of the last major parts of the pre-trip purchases was to get travel & health insurance. This ended up costing me $1,600. At first it seemed steep, but when I think about what I am covered for, it seems worth it, especially for a long trip like mine. This was the first time I had to purchase it, so it took longer then I expected. I ended up picking Access America and so far they seem great, hopefully though today would be the only time I have to contact them. For those that don't know much about travel insurance here are some of the things that it covers. Besides giving me medical & dental coverage, it covers emergency medical transportation in case I am in a area that doesn't have a good hospital and it ... read more
