South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 21st 2012

Of all the cities I was planning to visit in South America BA was the one that excited me the most. Maybe it was the Tango, the cobbled streets and all night café’s, the Red wine and steak houses or the football matches and it didn’t disappoint!! I arrived early on Tuesday 21stFebruary after a 7 hour flight from Quito which stopped briefly in Guayaquil. I remember the immigration cue was very long and it seemed to take ages to get my passport stamped and pass through customs. Having spent three months with family Vallejo I felt very alone and a little disorientated but also excited with the upcoming travels through Argentina. However the shuttle bus trip to the Ayres Portonos hostel was really easy and the weather was pleasantly warm compared to Quito. I liked ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito » Historical Center November 25th 2011

The main bulk of the trip was planned for South America where I wanted to spend at least a couple of months in Ecuador including XMAS and also visit the other countries I’d missed on the 2008 trip (Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and Chile). I arrived on Santiago on 22nd November and after three days headed up to Quito with Lan airlines (the same route as I’d done on the 2008 trip so it was a bit weird at Santiago International airport as nothing had changed!). It was great to see Marilu and her family again and also my Goddaughter Mady who was growing fast!!. Some of the highlights of Ecuador were (1) Going back to my favourite Pollo restaurant (2) Lagunas de Mojanda near Otavalo and having a barbecue (3) Centro Historico and the pigeons ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Nadi October 26th 2011

The RWC in NZ was an amazing experience but with the wet and cold weather I was thinking about the beach a lot! So one windy day in Wellington I popped into a bookshop and looked at a few guide books for the Pacific Islands that looked ideal for relaxing on the beach for a few weeks after the RWC. The options were the Cook Islands or Fiji. Both were in shoulder seasons with the rain arriving late November/December but Fiji won as it seemed more of a place travelers would go as it was on the RTW route via the USA. I also remembered that people I’d met from the 2008 trip were heading there and recommended it. How to travel around seemed quite complicated though but after much research on the Internet and the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island October 24th 2011

After Milford Sound I spent the night at the YHA in Te Anau a really nice small town on the edge of the fiord area and has the largest lake in the South Island . In the evening I went to the Fiordland on Film - Ata Whenua - Shadowland and had some food in a local Italian restuarant. On Friday 21st October I boarded the Navigator for the overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound is a very large and naturally imposing fjord (despite its name) in Fiordland, in the far south west of New Zealand. It is located in the same region as the smaller but more famous and accessible Milford Sound. It took second place after said Fiord as New Zealand's most famous tourism destination. Doubtful Sound was named 'Doubtful Harbour' in 1770 ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown October 24th 2011

I was really looking forward to visiting Queenstown I only made it as far as Wanaka on the last trip. The surrounding scenery was jaw dropping and the nightlife was great. On Monday I met up with some of the Haka group who were already there and we went to Winnies Pizza Restaurant they had desert Pizzza which consisted of Apple and Blueberry crumble on a pizza base!! The trip on the Gondola was good fun and there was easy access to the Miford and Doubful sound areas. I watched the RWC final in the Red Rock bar, great people, live band and good drinks mixed with a nail biting match which I thought the French were going to steal at one point!! The town went crazy after the All Blacks won!! ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand October 18th 2011

New Zealand was one of my favorite countries from the last trip and when I heard they were hosting the Rugby World Cup I just had to go back. I arrived late afternoon of Thursday 29th September and after clearing a surprisingly quite immigration and customs I was soon back in the Kiwi International hotel on Queen Street again. It felt great to be back and I couldn’t wait to explore again and headed to a couple of the pubs that I’d been to before. The fans were out in style and i got chatting to some South Africans who were confident in their team who were playing Samoa on the Friday. The Irish Pub Father Ted was packed with Welsh and Irish supporters. The Welsh were heading to Hamilton that weekend and the Irish were ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne September 28th 2011

It was great to arrive in Melbourne after having last visited in 2008 and I was looking forward to seeing the Quigley’s and experiencing the City again. I left my bags at Pat’s office and went for a swim and shower up at the City baths which felt good after the long flights from HK. It felt great to walk the streets of a Western city again after five weeks in China. The streets in Melbourne seemed deserted compared to Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong!! We left the city at around 4.30 to head out to Romsey which is a small village about an hour to the North of Melbourne (via the local of course). It was great to see the family again who had all grown up so much since my last visit and by ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong September 21st 2011

The journey into Hong Kong on Friday 16th September from Shenzhen was easy enough I just followed the crowds and there were plenty of other westerners travelling the same route. I got the bus from outside the airport to the train station with Andrew from Melbourne and Camelia from France. At the train station the directions are not so good but with a combination of asking the police and following the rough directions we were soon walking over the bridge which hundreds of people crossing to and from Hong Kong it was pretty exciting. On the HK side we got the MTR to Chungking mansions, which is backpacker central and at first a very intimidating place but you soon get used to it. In the afternoon I watched a World Cup rugby game which really got ... read more

Asia » China » Guangxi » Yangshuo September 9th 2011

I wanted to spend my last week in China based in one place and Yangshou had good reports from other travellers and had a mixture great out-door activities and a decent nightlife and also a good selection of hostels but was a small resort town with lots of surrounding countryside. The last three weeks had consisted of some serious travelling in terms of distance and constantly being on the go in some of the busiest tourist places at peak season. Shanghai, Yangzi River cruise, Giant Budha, Lijing, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dali and Tibet would have to wait until the next trip to China. In Yangshuo I stayed in two different hostels Long Time No See and Trippers which was around 15 minutes walk from the centre. I went to the amazing light show, chilled out in ... read more
