22,000 Baht... No Thanks!!! After being quoted over 22,000 baht for a package to get us through the rest of our time in Thailand (which we promptly passed on), we decided to travel the old fashioned way...public transport. So instead of the air conditioned mini van, we headed for Huo Lamphong Station to purchase our tickets on the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai for the 16/04, before crossing the river to Thonburi Station for our train to Kanchanaburi. Doing it this way was invigorating... we were in control... we weren't being ripped off too much... and we get to see some great countryside for our efforts!! Sitting at the station gave us our first taste as the train pulled up. Hot, no windows and hard bench seats greeted us, dousing our enthusiasm, but there was ... read more

...And No .... We Are Not Being Shot At!!!! Over the last few days we have really realised how much the media can blow things out of proportion.... Landing in Bangkok was a lot easier than expected with dedicated lines to metered taxis and efficient baggage handlers. Leaving the airport.... no problems... finding the hostel.... still no problems. Started looking like a nice place when we found a local market selling $4 dinners just around the corner (and we weren't accosted by every suit shop on the way there.) The first full day in Bangkok, we spent looking at Wats (or temples in english), with first stop being Wat Pho, the temple housing the Lying Buddha. It's enormous.... probably measuring about 50m long and around 15m high. It is housed in a series of buildings with ... read more

And So Phuket Draws To A Close... But before it does, we managed to get out to Koh Phi Phi (the islands off the east coast of Phuket), for a day tour on a speedboat. These islands, and especially Phi Phi Ley, was the location for the movie "The Beach" starring Leonardo DeCaprio, and has become an enormous draw card for tourism since it being released. So from the top....we got picked up from the hostel and taken to the port in Phuket City before being ushered onto our speedboat. A quick check of the weather and I decided to for-go the sea sickness tablets, hoping to confront my inadequacies, and off we went. The first stint to Phi Phi Ley was to take an hour, and the first 30 minutes was a breeze. All of ... read more

A Short Flight And It's Country Number 2... We arrived in Phuket after about 2 hours in the air to walk out of the airport and get our first taste of Thailand. Boy was it sour!!! We fought our way through the taxi drivers shouting at us "where you go?" or "you need taxi?", just to clear our head and have a smoke. With Amy having a coronary, I took on the role of barterer and organised a taxi. All I can say about the driving over here is HECTIC!!! Lanes are a guide only.... the centre of the road is either a slip road to turn or an overtaking lane.... if there's 2 defined lanes marked at the traffic lights then you just make your own lane somewhere.....I think you indicate to go where your ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Singapore Zoo April 5th 2009

To say that Singapore Zoo is a bit out of the city is both fact and fiction... For starters, it takes about 70mins to get there involving 2 trains and a bus, but although it gets a little more forrested, you never actually leave the city. I have a feeling that the whole island is just one big city. So after hearing that it is classed as one of the best in the world, we deciding to head there for the afternoon. Now think of the local zoo.... now add a rainforest.... now take away nearly all the glass... and add some of the best laksa I've ever had and that's Singapore Zoo!!! From the moment you enter, it is an experience not to be forgotten. We managed to see Probiscus Monkeys, Orang-a-tans, and the African ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Sentosa Island April 4th 2009

So This Is What Paradise Is!! We were up nice and early today, mainly because Amy was bouncing off the walls, as we made our day trip to Sentosa Island. The island is only about 1km off the coast of Singapore and is considered the southern most point of continental South East Asia (even though it's an island off an island off the continent). About 20 years ago the military gave the island over to tourism to create a resort/theme park/wilderness precinct and when the government does something here, they do it in style!! Through the neon arch, we pay the $2 admission to the island which then provides all bus and tram transport free making the world your oyster so to speak. First on the agenda... a lesson in history. Fort Silosa, built back in ... read more

Asia » Singapore April 2nd 2009

The National Icon Of Singapore So after a much needed nights sleep, we were on the go again.... On the cards for today...? Firstly, to jump on to the Hop-On-Hop-Off sightseeing bus to get ourselves aquainted with the city because, so I found out rather quickly, sense of direction goes out the window when travelling on underground trains. It took us to some known destinations such as the Singapore Flyer and Orchard Road, as well as some ones we didn't realise like the Botanical Gardens. We spent an hour just doing the full circuit, sussing things out, before jumping off at the Flyer for some breathe taking views (165 metres or 42 stories taking 37 mins for 1 full rotation) After seeing the city as if we were birds, we headed along The Esplanade (which is ... read more

Off, Off and Away.... Well... sort of. After a rocky start at Perth Airport due to a baggage handlers strike, not to mention their computers going down (amazing how much we rely on them isn't it??), we finally headed off on the first leg of our journey only a mere 3 hours late. Of course that meant that we didn't get through customs at Singapore until after 8pm and so ensued the mad panic to find accomodation!!! The discovery of a free wireless at McDonalds in the airport provided our means and off we went on the MRT to find our first place of rest. OH MY GOD. the directions on the net were found to be just a touch vague.... the people couldn't speak english in the shops to help and just waved wildly in ... read more

My god, how time flies!!! It seems like only a week ago I started saving for this adventure and only two days ago when the tickets were bought. Then again.... planning is half the fun. So much has happened in such a short period of time that I hope I can remember it all to be able to regale it for everyone else's benefit. And like all stories.... We Start At The Beginning, Over the last few months there hasn't actually been a lot to do other than slowly accumulate the necessities for the journey, which then poses the two eternal questions of travelling - 1) What the hell do you pack for such a long trip, and 2) How much is too much? After much deliberation, research and experimentation, the answer to both these questions ... read more

Well this is the usual first entry i suppose..... test out the blog and so forth. The story so far So , i've booked and paid for my tickets, managed to organise nearly all the gear i'll need and begun to organise medicals and visas for my March 30th departure. I'm still of two minds about what to do about accomodation, whether to book the first couple of stops yet or just wing it a little longer. I've also still got to get a few transport vouchers for some countries, but all in good time. The Destinations For those that don't know the itinery .... here we go - Perth - Australia (home) Singapore - 1 week Phuket - 4 days Bangkok - 1 week Chiang Mai - 5 days Siem Reap - 5 days Phnom ... read more
