Saturday 17 February – Barra Beach and Tofo It was an overcast day as we woke and walked to breakfast at 8.00am. After cereal, eggs and bacon, it was clear this was going to be another day of rain as it was the previous afternoon. Not to be dissuaded, and because it was not suitable to go with the boat out in the bay, we decided on riding quad-bikes to Tofo. Gareth our guide took us the Flamingo Bay Resort amongst the mangroves, to register and to pick up the bikes. It looked as though no one was staying at the resort which wasn’t unusual at this time of the year. December and January are their raining season, as well as February…apparently. After getting our driving instructions, along with our guide, we revved the engines and ... read more

Thursday 15 February Inhambane This was a long driving day through local villages. We saw the rural life of Mozambique which makes up around 80% of the country. The roadside stalls were selling fruit, cashews (very famous in the country) and clothing as well as charcoal and grasses. Inhambane (pronounced in-yam-ban) is in the Jangamo District of Inhambane Province, Mozambique. It is a sleepy historic town some 485 km north of Maputo. It has some great colonial architecture (in a low-key sort of a way) and is considered by many to be one of the prettiest towns in Mozambique. It is situated on a peninsula overlooking a bay, and also serves as a springboard to the coastal resorts around Tofo beach (some 30km due east, along a reasonably good road). The road was relatively good up ... read more

Tuesday 13 February – I’m flying to Maputo, Mozambique!!! After a full breakfast on the ground floor restaurant of the Easy Hotel Kenya I wrote up my last bit of my blog so was up to date. I then decided to go for a walk around the outside of the hotel. Walking out the other hotel, past the security guard, to another security guard and through the security gate, I walked down the long driveway to the public road. For the next hour I walked along the roads, saying mambo to the locals. All along there were high security fences with electric of barbed wire on the top. The roads were terribly dusty as they were not seals, very rocky and Nairobi hadn’t had rain since 2017. I took some photos from the air to show ... read more

Sunday 11 February – still in Nairobi! After an excellent breakfast (which I had missed the 2 previous mornings due to the tours starting early) I decided to get stuck into my blog and to further plan my earlier exit from Nairobi, perhaps by flying to Mozambique rather than having to go to South Africa. After lunch, I caught a taxi to the Nairobi National Museum Tours. There are no metred taxis but they have a book which tells them how much to change going from A to B. There is such a dominance of paper-based systems – receipting, accommodation, etc etc. and yet I am sure there is one mobile phone for each of the 48.5 million Kenyans! The National Museum of Kenya opened in 1930 as a place for local naturalists to collect and ... read more

Saturday 10 February, Day 3 Nairobi – The arrangements with Douglas, my guide from the previous day, was for a driver to pick me up at 6.00am. Meanwhile, after waiting until 7.15am and after calling the Safari Link Africa office I eventually met Chris the driver along with 4 women from Chicago who had booked the same tour. The only advantage of waiting all that time was that I saw a magnificent sunrise!!! As usual, after fighting the Nairobi Saturday morning traffic, we eventually were driving on the very rough, pot-holed road which carried massive numbers of trucks going from Mombasa to Nairobi, to all the other more northern African countries. First stop was the Rift Valley which provided some of Kenya’s most dramatic scenery, with sheer cliffs, algae-rich lakes and desert expanses dotted here and ... read more

Wednesday 7 & Thursday 8 February – Kilimanjaro to ???Johannesburg It was up at 5.30am for a 9.15am departure to Johannesburg. Adam hadn’t been well during the night so I felt bad leaving him but he had all the medications he required. Arriving at the airport, I was one of the first passengers to arrive and the check in section wasn’t open. The flight was going via Nairobi. It was on time. When I went to go through to get on the plane to fly the second leg to Johannesburg, the attendant said I could not get on the plane as I didn’t have enough spare pages in my passport. I then removed the Brazil visa which gave me 1 spare page and I had 3 half pages left. The attendant said the South African visa ... read more

THE DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TREKKER UP MT KILIMANJARO I thought some might be interested in what our day looked like whilst climbing Kili. We were woken by Fadhili, our waiter at around 6.30am. He popped his head in with a tray full of tea, coffee, milo, sugar and powdered milk in one hand and hot water in the other. We then sat in our sleeping bag which was on 2 mattresses, and slowly woke up with every sip of coffee. Next was starting to pack up our sleeping bag, pack our day pack and pack our back pack which was carried by porters. I was so please that my back pack was under 8kgs, however the porter’s loads were all weighed so they had to share the weight. Before breakfast we had to ... read more

Monday 5 February - Day 8: Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m) Several of us had a couple of hours sleep (me) and some had no sleep (Adam). We were woken by the waiter and so dressed very quickly. Most of us had the majority of our clothes on as we slept in them. All I had to do was to put my snow pants on. We were given hot water to wash our faces. Fortunately, we didn’t have to pack our tent up which was one less thing to do. We knew we would be back for brunch. We all met in the tent to have our hearty breakfast – porridge, coffee or milo, egg pancakes and fruit. There was certainly a buzz amongst us. We got ourselves ... read more

Sunday 4 February - Day 7: Karanga Camp (3963) to Barafu Camp (4640m) After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb took us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It was a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. Adam was feeling better, with the extra Diamox helping. Altitude sickness is so unpredictable. I noticed Kerry had a very moist cough – damn! I was so disappointed for he but knew she was on a mission and she was one, very determined lady. Love that!! On arriving at camp, we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It was always important to keep hydrated and ... read more
