Geo: -16.4958, 145.46720-22/02/09 At sea Temps Air 29°C Sea 27°C 20/02/09 We've just been informed by the captain that we're about to pass the German cruise liner the Europa which is on a 165 day world cruise, it's has the highest rating within it's companies fleet and is rated at 5 Star + a standard cabin for this current cruise was priced at £110,000, recession what recession? We took on a sea pilot at Darwin I didn't know there was such a thing, I thought pilots were pilots once you've had one so to speak they're all the same, apparently not, they're different to the normal pilots you sea in coastal waters, the ones you normally associates with ships entering ports and the like. Certain areas of the seas require the services of these guys who ... read more

Geo: -12.4613, 130.84215-18/02/09 At Sea on route to Darwin Australia I heard an interesting conversation today where one chap was saying he finds it cheaper to go cruising most of the year than pay residential home fees which set me thinking and he's right, dependant on the home in question and the level of service your expecting cruising is a viable option. Think of it, no bad weather as such, barring the odd storm, excellent food served where and when you want 24 hrs a day, plenty of varied and sometime stimulating conversation, as much entertainment as you can manage, and other than washing your clothes (unless your rich enough to be able to send it to the laundry daily) there's little work to be done. It's no wonder that some of the passengers think they ... read more

Geo: 3.04306, 101.441Friday 13/02/09 Singapore Temps air 33°C Sea 29°C Once again because of our size we couldn't berth at the cruise terminal which was a real shame as it's right on the harbour front and so easy to just nip into town, with easy links to the MRT underground and bus links as well as some great shopping, although it's no where near as cheap as it used to be. We berthed at one of the largest container ports in southern Asia which meant a 20 minute shuttle bus ride to the harbour front, so it was only a minor inconvenience. We had planned to visit a little known rainforest which is approx. 8mls outside Singapore it's not high on most visitors' lists of places to visit, but we thought it'd be interesting. The information ... read more

Geo: 4.21048, 101.976Thursday 12/02/09 Port Klang - Malaysia Temps air 31°C Sea 29°C Because of the size of the ship we had to berth in the commercial docks, meaning a 45 minute ( if your lucky) coach journey into KL which is the main only place of interest, as we stayed in KL two years ago we opted to take a 25 minute complementary shuttle to the 3rd largest shopping mall in southern Asia. Whilst there in addition to the normal tourist shopping ( I've never seen so many shoe shops, and women's shoes as well as being plentiful, varied, and available in just about every size, with the sales on they started from £3.00!!!!!) We took the opportunity to stock up with a few other essentials like lager, nibbles, soft drinks etc. before returning to ... read more

Geo: 5.36365, 100.311Wednesday 11/02/09 Penang - Malaysia Temps air 32°C Sea 28°C Arrived 07:15 On face value there didn't seem much to do here so we originally decided to just meander through the town taking in the local atmosphere, but with the introduction of a 3 hr introduction to Georgetown tour it seemed like a good idea, and would still allow time to wander the local streets afterwards, so we booked up. Well what a mistaker to maker, the trip was boring with little to take in other than the local museum 45mins were allocated to look at a few exhibits which took all of 20 minutes so the entrance was cluttered with loads and loads of people awaiting the return of the coaches to take us to the next place of interest. This next stop ... read more

Geo: 7.97501, 98.3515Thursday 05/02/09 At Sea 10:00 Well the night wasn't too bad just like a 10hr roller coaster ride, slept quite well and enjoyed a cooked brekki so all's well with the world. 13:00 The captain announced that he had to make a wide diversion last night and that the cyclone is now behind us and heading for Madagascar with winds of 150mph + although we can expect to be buffeted for a while longer until the distance between us increases. Friday 06-09/02/09 At Sea, Air Temp 28-29°C Sea 28°C I've held back from expressing my opinions of my fellow passengers but it's time to reveal all, warts and all. Let me start by saying we're extremely lucky to have good company at our evening dinner table, they are Bill, retired General Manager (used to ... read more

Geo: -20.2554, 57.5517Wednesday 04/02/09 Mauritius - Indian Ocean Temps air 27°C Sea 29°C Arrived 08:00 to a clear bright day, we've booked an all day island excursion taking in the Black Gorge, Chamarel waterfall and the coloured earths, no sooner had we started off then the weather closed in, with the tops of the peaks alternating between being visible and enveloped in cloud. Fortunately by the time we had reached the top the clouds had lifted sufficiently to view the dormant volcanic crater below us making for a good photographic opportunity, however looking back seawards the view overlooking the bay and the beautiful coral sea in the distance was rapidly being obliterated by the descending clouds which then unleashed its payload in a deluge, swamping everything and everybody not covered up, we were luck to only ... read more

Geo: -21.105, 55.5249Monday 02/02/09 At Sea, Hot & Sunny, Temps Air 27°C Sea 29°C I'm naming today Digital Disaster Day on account of all the problems I'm having with a ship load of passengers who just haven't got the faintest of what they're doing and the on board staff who are used to working to the lowest common dominator and forgetting that there are some intelligent people on board. It all started 2 weeks ago when I joined up for an advanced photographic editing workshop after 50 minutes I'd learnt nothing new and the topics I wanted to explore still hadn't been gone over with the time still dwindling away I had to leave the course which had already over run it's timeslot by 25 minutes as it was time for evening dinner, I was assured ... read more

Geo: -28.7863, 32.0966Saturday 30/01/09 Richards Bay - South Africa Temp Air 27°C Arrived 07:00 at what we're told is the largest coal loading facility in the southern hemisphere, seems a strange place to berth but it's able to accommodate larger vessels with ease and is closer to most of KwaZulu-Natal game reserves. The trains bring the coal from the mines approx. 200mls away and they're enormous some are over 2kms long, they're so long that they're not allowed to stop, they load and unload on the move and even drivers shift changes are carried out whilst moving, albeit slowly, the reason being that the engines cannot generate sufficient power to pull the vast amount of wagons from a standing start. We were told that the previous week they had a major derailment which they've only just ... read more

Geo: -29.853, 31.0164 Wednesday 28/01/09 At Sea Left Cape Town 04:00 4 hrs late due to a force 9 gale preventing the pilot & tugs manoeuvring the ship through 270 degrees in order to depart the port, eventually they had to get the senior pilot and the 3 biggest tugs available to perform the manoeuvre and so eventually we started out on route for Durban. The weathers improved as the day's progressed with winds now force 6, it's a grey day but the temperature is still a very pleasant 21°C. despite the wind & swell it's not too bad. I'll have to nip up to the cyberstudy tonight to catch up with emails & blogs etc. Thursday 29/01/09 At Sea Temps Air 24°C Sea 23°C Weather's calmed down now with just a slight swell, nothing to ... read more
