So, dinner last night was rather yummy. I had a Zebu dish cooked with cassava leaves and of course some rice. Gee was with us to make sure we didn’t get up to any mischief and he’d brought Isan with him as a side kick. Isan is one of the drivers, and has been ferrying me, Jessica and Jason around. He’s a lovely young man, and a very patient and competent driver. My goodness he’s been working hard this week. I did feel a bit sorry for him though; his English isn’t good at all so I’ve had to do my best with my very bad French inthe car, and he ended up out with a group of people he doesn't know and couldn’t chat with! We did of course pay for his and Gee’s meal. ... read more

Today was a moving on day, and yes, that did mean revisiting THAT road, although calling it a road is probably a bit of a stretch! Somehow in the daylight with less dust being thrown up it didn’t seem quite as dramatic as the first time, but it’s still a drive I wouldn’t have attempted in Barbie. We drove for around 3 hours on roads similar to those before THAT road. In Madagascar the cars travel on the right hand side of the road, well they do when they aren’t in the middle of the road or on the left hand side. It really seems a bit random except when there’s another vehicle coming towards you and you move to the right hand side to pass. If you plan to overtake a vehicle, which of course ... read more

As I sit in Bole Airport after the first leg of our journey everything seems to be going OK. The 13 of us are all here, and so far no disasters. FYI, we have 2 Jesses and 2 Ians. The Ians are simple Ian W ans Ian L. The two Jesses however, both have the same initial, so Jess who is a Dive Master will be known as Jess, and Jess who isn't a DM will be known as Jessica. The flight was uneventful, and for me in Cloud 9, the Ethiopian Air business class, very comfortable, with good food, fizzy champagne and a nice big screen to look at. I hear it was less comfortable in the back, and that breakfast was served at about 3am. There are a few weary faces in the group! ... read more

Our last full day, and the last blog for this adventure. We needed to drop Sherri off at the airport before 17:00, and planned our day accordingly. Susan wanted a final waterfall fix, so we left Kilkenny and drove northeast to the Devils Glen forest and waterfall. The drive took us through a beautiful mountain pass, with long ranging views up the valley. It was only marred by the roadworks which delayed us by about 15 minutes, but hey ho! For the first time in this adventure the sat nav took us the wrong way, and we ended up driving along a rough track to a locked gate, which on further inspection was the entrance to a rehab facility. Well, we have imbibed a drink or two over the last 3 weeks and wondered whether the ... read more

Our penultimate full day, and the sun was shining ? We found a café for breakfast, then headed to the castle. The self-guided tour was interesting and well structured. It took around an hour, and there was plenty of information on the history of the castle and the Earls of Ormonde, the 25th Earl who died in 1997 being the last. Upon his death, the Marquessate of Ormonde became extinct and the Earldoms of Ormonde and Ossory and the Viscountcy of Thurles became dormant. The castle is now owned by the people of Ireland since the last Marquess of Ormond sold it to the State for a token sum of £50. Afterwards we had an ice cream, and explored the 50 acres of parkland adjacent to the castle. It’s beautiful, with lots of wild flowers and ... read more

We were greeted by grey, overcast skies and chilly temperatures. We left the Lodge, said goodbye to the doggies, packed Sherri, and set off to our penultimate stop in Kilkenny, about an hour away. Once we had found parking we attempted to find our lodgings, eventually asking in a café at approximately the correct address. Luckily the café owner was also our host, so we had somewhere to stay for the next 2 nights. The accommodation on this occasion isn’t Airbnb and was booked by me rather than Susan; I’m afraid to say the quality isn’t really up to the same standard as our last few accommodations, being small and a bit tatty. It is clean though, and we’ll only be using it as somewhere to sleep, so it’s not a major problem. We went for ... read more

Susan’s birthday! Of course, that means she gets to choose what we do today. We headed to Birr about 15 minutes north, and visited Birr Castle Demesne. This is a castle, still lived in by the Parson family who have lived there for over 400 years. The current incumbent is the Seventh Earl of Rosse (Brendan Parsons), Lady Rosse (Alison Cook-Hurle) and their family. The castle is situated in around 120 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland. We wandered along stone-lined paths, following the start of the Solar Trail, where information boards spaced to the scale of the solar system give interesting facts on the sun and planets; each step was the equivalent of 1.6million km in space. Once we got to Mars we turned onto the trail taking us towards the castle, finding our way ... read more

It was lovely when we woke up; definitely a day for shorts. Evelyn, our host from last night had recommended a route around the coast road towards our next venue, which we decided to follow. We both agreed that Evelyn is an amazing host, the best we’ve met so far on this trip. The annex we stayed in was spotlessly clean, the beds comfortable, and the fridge was really well stocked with an excellent choice of food for a DIY breakfast. We took advantage of her generosity, and had sausage, scrambled eggs and tomato, with apple juice and tea / coffee to drink. We were set up for the day! Our first stop was in beautiful little village called Timoleague where there is a ruined Friary which had been lived in by Franciscan Monks until the ... read more

Another day of sunshine! We had planned to drive around the Ring of Kerry today, before heading to our next stop about 2 hours drive away. I’m delighted to say though, that following a recommendation from Man with Donkey yesterday as well as one or two other people in Dingle, we changed our plan and did the Slea Head Drive instead. Slea Head is a promontory in the westernmost part of the Dingle Peninsula. National Geographic magazine once said it was the most beautiful place in the world; I’m not qualified to agree or disagree on that because I haven’t been everywhere else, but it is absolutely stunning! We had a yummy breakfast in Dingle Town, then headed off. As we left the town we spotted a Buddhist Monk who had been on the road near ... read more

Today greeted us with a blue sky and sunshine! As we’d been in Limerick overnight, we wrote one: Travel buddies, Susan and Bee Flew to Dublin citeee The picked up a car And drove very far Around Ireland – it’s very priteee! We packed up Sherri and headed just south of west to the Dingle Peninsula. This area is one of Susan’s ‘must dos’ and she’d done a lot more pre-trip research than me, so I was looking forward to it. The journey skirted round the bottom of Tralee, a great name place, which always makes me think of singing! We had a brief stop at Inch Beach, a large sandy beach with a surf school and restaurant. The surf school had a group of young people jumping around in the waves, all in wet suits. ... read more
