A law that is enforced in Mesopotamia but not in the United States is penalties for making loans. In the United States, people take out loans all day long. They use it to pay their bills, pay back their debts, or to borrow money. Making loans is just a natural thing in the US. In Mesopotamia, they had the code of Hammurabi, which included laws defining the penalties for crime and laws governing the rights of those who were injured, owned property, or made loans. The code of Hammurabi was the earliest set of laws recorded. Economically, if people couldn’t make loans in this country, our bills just wouldn’t get paid and the US would be known for being in debt. Socially, people would be with other people that have the same economic status as them.
