Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Valence July 11th 2011

It's that time of the year again. Our annual trip abroad. This year, we are swapping houses with the Quer family (Regis et Fabienne) from St-Peray, a small village outside of Valence in the Rhones-Alpes region of France. We're flying via Amsterdam to Lyon where we'll pick up the Quer's Opel Zafira (think Chevrolet HHR) and drive the hour to Valence and St-Peray. We'll be watching the Tour de France live, on the 18th stage (Alpes D'Huez) on July 22. I think it might be close to Grenoble on this map. Watch for us on TV. I will stick out at 6'4" with a bright orange Holland** baseball cap. (Plus I'll be the only qui ne fume pas des Gitanes ni Galoises). The travel blog software has changed this year. Looks like we'll be able to ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » Province of Utrecht » Utrecht July 26th 2010

Today we went back into Utrecht for the second time. I can't believe it has been exactly 2 weeks since we went there the first time! We headed straight for the National Museum of Musical Clocks to Street Organs. This is a museum that houses the world's largest collection of automatic musical instruments such as street organs. This was a really cool museum. We first walked around the second floor viewing area which had all sorts of displays. There were even cardboard discs used to play music on these machines! Then we took part in the guided tour (he did an abbreviated English version for just us) which was really cool! The guide demonstrated most of the instruments on display. They also had an activity room just for kids. One activity the kids both did was ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Hellevoetsluis July 25th 2010

Once again, we decided to pick a town and just go. So, we picked Hellevoetsluis partly cuz it sounded weird and partly cuz it is on the coast just south of Den Haag. It was an overcast day and we weren't even sure if things would be open since mostly everything shuts down on Sundays. We got there and found the VVV (tourist info) and got a map and found our way to the harbour. There was a really cool swing bridge fully functioning and in "full swing" (so to speak) when we got there. It opened up to let about 8 boats through. Then one foolish small sailboat tried to sneak through as it was almost closed. They got spoken to harshly on the loudspeaker. We did not understand a word of it but you ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Neuss July 24th 2010

Und today ve vere und Germany! Jahhh. That was German, Nigel-style! Well, today was one of our most fun days so far! We had planned on going to Dusseldorf but at the last minute (actually, around 8am this morning) we reconsidered and found a nearby smaller city called Neuss (pronounced Noice). It was quite noice! sorry about that one... Rather than picking an attraction, we chose a city on the Rhein and decided to play it by ear! We found parking and then found a visitor's centre and got a map. We then just wandered around to see what we could see which turned out to be a lot! The city centre had a ton of history including ancient Roman battlements from 16 B.C. The city is over 2000 years old - amazing. Then it was ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » Gelderland » Arnhem July 23rd 2010

Just wanted to start off by saying Thanks! to all of you who have sent comments and messages along to us! It is always nice to hear from our friends and family and we are glad you are enjoying the blog! Today we went to the Open Air Museum which was close by in Arnhem. This was a little like the Dutch version of Pioneer village but way cooler. There were homes and farms and mills and churches and a working cheese factory all around the huge property. You could walk and/or get around on these street trams, some of which dated back to early 1900s and still work. You could hop on the tram at any of the 6 stations and hop off where you wanted. We also stopped at the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Gouda July 22nd 2010

We're always making these gouda jokes - you know, the cheese eet tastes so Gouda! Turns out when the Dutch say it, they pronounce it Hhhhhowda (the repeated h's mean you do one of those noises at the back of your throat). So, we've changed the joke to Hhhhhowda cheese taste? We spent a few hours today wandering around the Gouda cheese market and shops! The cheese market was a fully functioning cheese market and it was surrounded by all sorts of stalls selling everything from cheese to t-shirts to fabrics to fresh fruit. We had brought a french baguette to eat along with the cheese we bought there as well as some apples. We also indulged in poffertjes which are the most delicious little mini pancakes with a dollop of butter and powdered sugar warm ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam July 21st 2010

Today went very smooth as far as transportation. We had no problems getting to the Park'n'Ride. Then the attendant was out of Metro tickets (subway/bus) so gave us 4 train tickets instead. The train was easier than the subway/bus (no transfer required) and was sort of like the GO train (not quite as nice but fine). It probably also helped that the weather was not quite so hot today. We found our way easily to the canal bus and hopped on. Made it to the Anne Frank museum with time to kill so we wandered the streets for a while and Nigel and Russell found some more herring which they cautiously ate! The Anne Frank museum was really great! The space they lived in for such a long time was SOOO small. The tour was very ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam July 20th 2010

Today was our first of two forays into Amsterdam. We bought a 48 hour canal boat pass which allows us to hop on and off at all the major attractions. Our first stop today was NEMO which was kind of like Ontario Science Centre only 100% of the exhibits were hands-on. It was a bonus that every exhibit/activity had Dutch AND English instructions! We've purchased a Netherlands Museum Card (at the first museum we went to - the Railway Museum). This gives free entrance to 400+ museums in Holland! We've saved a ton of money so far. Today, when we went to NEMO, the card also got us 4 snack vouchers (worth 22 euros) that we cashed in for 4 big slices of apple tart cake and 4 drinks! We also managed to have a brief ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » The Hague July 19th 2010

This morning we headed off to Den Haag (The Hague). Our first stop was Madurodam which is a big tourist attraction consisting of around 200 buildings in The Netherlands created by hand in miniature (scale of 25:1). It was sort of like the Dutch version of Cullen Gardens except that they were replicas of actual things here (some of which we've already seen and some not). For example they had a replica of Schiphol Airport and you could see the 747s taxiing out to the runway. It was really well done. Next stop was Scheveningen Beach which is on the North Sea. We had expected it to be similar to when we were at the North Sea in England and it was a little chilly, but people went in the water anyways. Well, here in the ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Zaandam July 18th 2010

We started the day with a run/bike ride with the whole family. We tried a new trail which was very nice and took us past several farms with cows, sheep, goats, chickens, baby chicks, and had no traffic except for one guy on a horse & buggy (and he had a buggy whip so I guess that industry hasn't completely shut down)! Part of the trail was just a cycling path across the top of a dike. I think this was my favourite run so far and I'll definitely do that route again. Today we went to the city of Zaandam and took in the Zaanse Schanse which is a grouping of mills and museums interspersed with (very) old houses that people still live in (I guess they'd call that a living museum - they argue ... read more
