South America » Colombia » Popayan July 19th 2018

County number two and the one I've been most looking forward to visiting....Colombia! Firstly let's dismiss the bad stigma from the past and look forward to an increasingly popular place to visit with incredible scenery and diversity (landscapes and people). A country where the people are full of life and are proud of where Colombia is headed. An early morning rise to cross the border (from Ecuador for us) should be considered at the moment due to the situation with Venezuela. Many Venezuelans are camped out in order to cross and their lines are long meaning crossing the border can take a while. We got there at 6 am and it took us an hour and half. First stop was Popayan after a 6 hour bus ride from Ipiales through some amazing valleys. We didn't know ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos July 14th 2018

The Galapagos Islands, probably made even more famous by planet earth 2's incredible footage of the baby Iguanas first steps in to life by fleeing dozens of snakes. We didn't see that kind of drama but we did see heaps of Iguanas, and I mean heaps. The Galapagos Islands is a great place to visit, it's so unique and special and a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you're in the area, GO! That said, the start of our trip to the islands was a little bit stressful as both our bags didn't turn up at the baggage claim for some bizarre reason which left us with no spare clothes and toiletries for 24 hours (apparently a common occurance). Also our bank cards were blocked which meant stress levels were high as we only had $30 ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Quilotoa July 8th 2018

From the Amazon to the mountains in mere hours, we managed to survive the extremely packed Quito buses (prime for pick pocketing, have your bag in front of you and nothing in your pockets) at only 25 cents a trip, to get to the south bus terminal (bus C4 to the end). One way to Latacunga then a change for Quilotoa on a local bus, both trips took two hours. We arrived at Quilotoa which is a small village on the top of the crater. A town with half built buildings and average $30 total per night accommodation but priced per person. Our accommodation included dinner and breakfast. At 3900 masl, the temperature was quite cold so having layers is necessary. We spent a very cold night in our room covered in three blankets. The aim ... read more

South America » Ecuador » East » Cuyabeno Reserve July 6th 2018

There are many different countries that you might want to visit the Amazon from amd many different ways in which to explore this incredibly vast and diverse rain forest. Our choice was to visit the Cuyobueno national park in Ecuador. Through Anna's work, we were lucky enough to get a free 3 night 4 day tour free for Anna and net price for me. Our tour was with Jamu lodge, one of a hand full of lodges available. Getting to the jungle from Quito is either by plane or bus (you can guess which is faster but also more expensive). Either way, you will arrive a Lago Agrio and be transported with the rest of your group to the Cuyobueno River, about 2 hours by mini bus. We had some lunch upon arrival and then took ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito July 2nd 2018

Almost ten years that I've dreamt of going to South America, and here we are! First stop on our 3 month exploration of this diverse sub-continent was Quito in Ecuador. We based ourselves at the Juana de Arco hostel in the old town. A very nice place to stay however get a room away from the main road as it is noisy almost all of the time. We took a walk around the old town and saw the main plazas under a grey sky which later cleared up. Quito is quite hilly and at 2800 masl you do feel the breathlessness creep in when going up any incline. Taxis are plentiful and a cheap way of getting about quickly and more safely (just make sure you get them to put the taxi meter on). The taxi ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre » Monterosso al Mare May 31st 2018

Sometimes it's hard to decide where to go for a long weekend in Europe, this time we decided to visit Cinque Terre in Italy after a recommendation from a friend. Flying in to Genoa, we immediately headed to the train station for a 1.5hr, slow train, ride along the North West Coast of Italy to the first Terre, Monterosso Al Mare where we were staying. Cinque terre comprises of five small and different towns along a small section of the coast. The five towns are Monterosso Al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. All can be accessed by train but to go just one train stop will cost 4 euros. You can get a pass but we were quite sneaky and didn't pay for any tickets. As it was a sunny day on a Sunday, lots ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Madeira May 31st 2018

The Portuguese Island of Madeira was a perfect getaway for the wife's special birthday and to escape the English weather in February. It's quite a small island but very mountainous and the only decent way to get around is to hire a car, although navigating Funchals windy and hilly streets was made easier thanks to GPS. We also took up an Airbnb about 10 minutes walk away from the main centre of Funchal which was ideal for the length of time we stayed. Our first stop was Pico deAiero where you get some stunning views of the deep gorges. We were lucky to have gone that day as it was the only day where the peak was only partly covered in cloud. There are a few walks you can do from the top which link to ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona August 19th 2017

Almost 5 years in Europe and I hadn't even been to Spain yet! In between jobs, we found an opportunity to go visit Barcelona for 4 nights. We found a nice AirBnb near Rambla del Poblenou which was in a good location and easily accessible by the metro. Barcelona is well known for it's architecture and the three main places that are a must to see is the infamous Sagrada Familia which is stunning from inside and outside with complete contrasts in style. It's pointy and rugged exterior is transformed in to a grand emporium with colourful windows and towering pylons. It is preferable to book tickets online and a few days before as they limit the amount of people that can visit inside these sites every 30 minutes. The same goes for Park Guell which ... read more

North America » United States » California » Los Angeles August 19th 2017

The second half of our trip was from Santa Barbara with its patriotic American flag lined main street and purple Jacaranda dotted streets. It has a nice beach with a mountain backdrop and plenty of shops around. We then entered L.A from the north and arrived at the Celebrity Stars to start with. I didn't realise that they extend for hundreds of meters on both sides of the road. If you did want to locate a specific star then i'd say to get a map that way you would find it easier. We then went to go up the hill for some city views but as it was a public holiday, the only options were to park halfway up the hill and walk or drive right through. We got a glimpse of the surprisingly small city ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Francisco August 19th 2017

After several trips throughout Asia, it was nice to be able to look forward to going the other direction to America. Two weeks from San Fran down to L.A with plenty of family time from start to finish. San Francisco is well known for it Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz and steep hills. The first day we did a first in our travels and that was to take a hop on and hop off sightseeing bus which was actually not too bad as we were able to get around the city quite easily seeing as it is quite big. The bus went over the Golden Gate bridge which was covered in fog which is actually a common thing, also very windy but that was quite a fun experience, almost like taking a level roller-coaster, hold on to ... read more
