Mr Powers - Colin Hutton

Colin Hutton Well I finally graduated... took me an extra year but I did it. B.S. in Wildlife Ecology and Concervation, I'm a certified hippie. And being a professional hippie means that I must avoid going into the real world for as long as possible. I'm starting by joining the Peace Corps. On May 14th, 2007, I leave for Panama to begin work in their community environemental conservation program. Don't ask me what exactly I'll be doing because I honestly don't know. I'll have a better idea when I'm there in a couple days. I think the program will be awesome. Panama has tons of wildlife and some nice chunks of rainforest left. I like wildlife and rainforests... it's a perfect match. I don't know how much free time and/or internet acess I will have so I can't say how often this thing will get updated.

I have been informed by Peace Corps that I must have a disclaimer on my journal. Therefore... all the crap contained in this journal in my own opinion and does not express the views of the US governmanet or Peace Corps.

Sorry I havenīt posted anything in a while. I got lazy and then the internet in my site went out and I donīt know when or if it will come back. Iīve got some pictures to put up but I donīt have them with me so Iīll try and get around to that next time Iīve got internet access. Yesterday was May 16 which means that Iīve been here for a whole year now. Honestly, it hardy feels like Iīve spent much time at all in Panama. Iīve been keeping busy in my site by teaching environmental education in the school. [View Full Entry]

I guess it's been a while since I posted something. Sorry about that, just kept slipping my mind. I'm sure much has happened since my last entry, but I doubt I'll be able to remember it all. Probably some of the most exciting news is my new house. I finally moved out of my host family's house and I'm now renting part of a house belonging to a gringo in my site. My host family is wonderful and I might have been alright spending the whole 2 years with them were it not for the youngest and oldest boys. The 4 [View Full Entry]

Island
Our Boat
Bonfire

The last leg of our trip took place in and around Panama City. I don’t really like spending much time in big cities, too many people and buildings, not enough nature. However, there are a few things about Panama City that I do enjoy, aside from it being 100 times better than San Jose. The first of these is the food. The prices may be a bit higher, but the restaurants serve tasty food here where they fail to do so almost everywhere else in the country. Foremost among these is sushi. I love sushi and the city has plenty of [View Full Entry]

Howler Monkey
Panama City
Butterfly

After a great time in Cocle, my sister and I headed off to Panama City. This was our launching point for the next part of our holiday vacation, Kuna Yala, or San Blas if you prefer. The flights for Kuna Yala all leave very early in the morning so we had to be at the airport by 5 AM. Not being a morning person, I was not looking forward to this part of the trip. Our ticket person did not help matters by being completely unhelpful, but I'm used to the fact that costumer service does not exist in this country. [View Full Entry]

Brittle Star in Sponge
Paradise
Anemone

It's been a while since my last post and I'm sure you're all dying to know what happened to the snake. It eventually turned up in my brother's room a few days later, when it "attacked and almost killed him," as he put it. That's a pretty bold move for a snake that was too small to eat a newborn chicken. Luckily my host brother survived the vicious attack. More amazing is the fact that, not only did they not kill the snake, but they put it back in the cardboard box for me. I had to let it go [View Full Entry]

Glass Frog
Sunset

Iīv done ben told dat my speling n gramer ainīt prefect so Iīs ben extra carful to right dis entry prefect. The title of this entry in English is īSnake vs Baby Chicken.ī Unfortunately, the outcome of this death match did not go quite as planned. Let me start with a little background info. I like snakes. This of course is baffling to every Panamanian since they are absolutely terrified of snakes. Iīm hoping to change their undeserved reputation of being deadly monsters by doing really crazy things... like picking up completely harmless snakes without them killing me. Impossible you say. In my last update I forgot to mention one of the best things to happen to me (and by best I of course mean humilating, but probably very entertaining to everyone else). It has to do with my second attemp at harvesting coffee. I told myself I would never do it again after my first experience, and I should have listened. But instead I decidied to give it another shot and spend a whole day picking coffee with family and friends. The first time I picked coffee, I realized that I really suck at it. This time not only did I [View Full Entry]

La Amistad... picture doesn
Strike a Pose!
This Tree Was Sooo Hot

It's hard for me to believe that I've been here for 6 months already. It definitely doesn't feel that nearly that much time has passed. I'll admit that there were many times in the beginning when I questioned whether or not I had made the right decision in joining the Peace Corps. Not that I wasn't enjoying the experience, but I kept wondering if I could have been doing something better with my life. I don't know what those other options would have been, but it doesn’t really matter anymore because now I'm sure that I made the right choice in [View Full Entry]

Sleeping Beauty
Panamanian
Quetzal

I'm not sure what's got into me but I'm actually going to use this post for its intended purpose of telling people about my travels... however not before I ramble on a bit as usually about stuff of absolutely no use to anyone wondering what to do and where to go if they visit Panama. Let's start out with the fantastic breakfast that I had this morning. I've been in site 3 months now and the food finally got to me. No offense to any Panamanians (love you guys, just not your food), but the food here is just abysmal. I [View Full Entry]

Smaller Island

Feeding Frenzy

Here are some fun guessing games that you can play out in the campo to kill time: 1. How long will the neighbors new puppy live? (You're crazy if you guess more than a month) 2. How old is that girl smiling at me? (Probably not older than 16) 3. Why is this person laughing at me? (I wish I knew the answer to that one) 4. What kind of meat is this? 5. Oh, it's chicken... what part of the chicken is it from? (There are some strange looking bones inside chickens that you probably didn't know about) 6. Do [View Full Entry]
