Up before dawn, bags ready at 545am. We left the Bilila Lodge for the Serous Airport. As dawn broke, we hopped aboard our chartered planes to fly over the Serengeti to Arusha, where we boarded our game drive Range Rovers for the bumpy ride to the border. Seth told us not to get unnerved, and good thing he said that, or I would have been very much so! Like the "mosquitoes" on the beach in Mexico, we were surrounded by colorfully dressed Masai women & men hawking all sorts of trinkets. They were very aggressive even after you said NO, asante sana. We didn't buy anything but many people did, just to contribute to the local economy. We will visit a Masai village tomorrow, so I will wait for my purchases until after that excursion. I can't believe our day. I fell last night, gouging up my left shin, bumping the back of my head and my butt. It made it pretty hard to ride in the vehicles with a sore left cheek and having to lean forward all day, and it was ALL DAY from 800am to after 530pm .We started out in the rain with a school visit. The kids were Masai, the school sponsored by the Serena Hotel. Roads were rough. But game was everywhere. After Ngorogoro, I was afraid everything else would be downhill from there, but it got better the further into the Serengeti you get; giraffe, a few bull elephants, warthogs and zebras as far as you could see. Seth must have been laughing inside when I said I'd hoped to see zebra. We even ... read more

Oh my goodness, we're not in Kansas anymore. After a 600am wake-up, early breakfast buffet and briefing, we were assigned our cars and bid farewell to Arusha. We drove through town on our way out. Saw the clock tower that is the midway point between the Cape of Good Hope and Cairo, the center of town, carts laden with fruits and vegetables, women with huge stacks of bananas. The market was going on in one town but I am not sure whether my photos will turn out. The towns could be in Mexico, except for all the Africans. Out in the countryside the Masai live in bomas, round huts made of elephant dung, with thatched roofs. Its really incredible.how they still live the way they lived thousands of years ago. We entered Lake Manyara Park and ... read more

Woke up at 530am. The chirping birds are deafening, but peaceful. We went to breakfast early. Met up with some of the Tauck people we had seen during the transfer, and we decided not to go into Arusha town. We figured its our only day to relax before heading out for an exhaustive trip ahead,so we reorganized our suitcases according to the next few days' needs, necessities on top and airplane stuff at the bottom. Feeling a bit more organized,we wandered around inside the walls of the Arusha Mountain Resort. Beautifully tended grounds. Small gift shop with sundries and gifts. Buffet lunch for two, $25 plus tip. The buffet includes many cooked meats and vegetables, lots of East Indian foods, salads, desserts. Good prices here. After this one pre-tour day, every meal will be included. ... read more

We arrived late tonight, Arusha Airport if a tiny little thing, maybe 100 ft. by 100 ft. We had paid the additional Euros to fly Economy Comfort class on KLM. Wise move. Not only was there additional legroom and seat recline, but it is first on and first off the plane, after Business Class, of course. We entered the organized chaos earlier than most on the full flight from Amsterdam. Tanzania Immigration fingerprints you on arrival, so each transaction takes several minutes to complete. A full Airbus took more than an hour to clear. Consequently we were waiting for the rest of the Tauck Tours members to clear immigration for quite some time. We had met a lovely woman on the plane who was meeting her daughter, who is in the Peace Corps near Arusha. We ... read more

Long, long, long day to get here. Horizon to Portland. Mt Rainier, Mt. St. Helens. Mt Adams Mt. Hood all in their glory outside the window. Delta Sky Club in PDX quite nice. Off th AMS. Took a sleeper and after veggie lunch took a nice 6 hour sleep. KLM Lounge 52 in AMS was huge! Lots of food and drink choices. Check in at the gate was long, with extremely high security. Got the pat down, maybe because of my long sweater. Another 8 hours flying with marginal movie choices, long long day. We arrived at 845pm and Colonel Uto (?) greeted us outside customs. We met several pairs of people from all over the country before we even got into the bus for the ride to Arusha Mountain Resort. At the hotel we had ... read more

I am going to Africa tomorrow. Unbelievable! After packing most of my things last night, my suitcase weighs only 41 pounds. It paid off to buy the uber-lightweight Eagle Creek. Hope it holds up under these circumstances. Lunch with Gwen then dinner with Maria. I am relishing my peaceful morning. There won't be much peace from here on out. Getting the place ready for Steph and Rylan who are staying here while I'm gone. ... read more
