I'm dropped off at the start of the Waimangu Volcanic Valley trail and find I'm the only one from my morning group to take this add on so I'm really pleased as they pull out of the car park and leave me to a whole blissful afternoon of solo hiking, just the way I like it. The lady in the reception area hands me a trail leaflet with loads of interesting info for various places along the trail. She explains that I'll need to catch the 3.50pm bus at the end of the trail to bring me back to the start point in time for Thomas to pick me up with his afternoon Wai-O-Tapu group. And so I set off to the start of the trail where I find some art work depicting 1886 tourists observing ... read more

Today I'm off exploring geothermal wonders about 15 miles away from Rotorua where I'm staying. Unfortunately it's little drizzly so I'm kitted out in walking gear - walking boots, fleece, waterproofs etc. We pick up a few people along the way including one ditzy girl who gets on the bus wearing the flimsiest little summer dress and flip flops. The only other thing she has with her is a mobile phone. Rolls eyes! As we drive out of Rotorua Thomas our guide gives us the low down on Rotorua. Of the 70,000 population a quarter are involved in the tourist industry looking after around three million tourists a year! We pass a race course on our left. Who knew, horse racing in Rotorua? I wonder if the smell puts the horses off. Did I mention there ... read more

We are greeted at the start of our tour aboard the dark green Hobbiton tour bus by our bus driver whose opening gambit is 'My name's Danny and I'm a terrible driver. It takes about an hour to get to Hobbiton, I usually sleep!'. And so the silliness continues with our hells angels look alike bus driver Danny. He tells us about the spelling of some place names with 'wh' being pronounced similarly to 'ph' as 'f' the best version of this being a place called Whuka Whuka! Who knows if it's true, Danny seems a bit of a leg puller. We find out that the farm used for the Hobbiton set was chosen after lots of flying over countryside to find the perfect mix of rolling hills with trees dotted about and views all round ... read more

Another glorious sunny day dawns so I make use of my free morning with a saunter around the little peninsula that sticks out into the lake at Rotorua. I start at the busy end where there are people queuing for boat trips, helicopter rides and water plane rides. The shore side is heaving with little black teal with golden eyes which I find out are New Zealand Scaup or Papa go. There are some odd looking black swans in amongst the teal with smatterings of red around their beaks. I've noticed a few geocaches are hidden along this part of the lakeside so hope I get to find my furthest from home ever cache today. The walk takes me through pretty woodland and where it's boggy there's a boardwalk. Reading the slightly knackered interpretive panels I ... read more

I'm picked up at my hostel and am joined by a young couple from the UK one of whom later turns out to be pretty important, but more of that later. We join a coach load of Americans who are a lovely bunch of mostly pensioners. It seems to be the thing to do when you retire in the US, go on large group coach tours in far flung places. I've met them all over. They always seem to have some indignity or other to suffer. This time it was having to wear lanyards with their names on as if saying 'If you find this old person, please look after them and ring this number so we can come pick them up'. On other trips I've seen them being forced to wear identical baseball hats, or ... read more

Rotorua youth hostel is peachy. I'm in a four bed female only room and no bunks! The reception staff are lovely and put a map in my hand and give me directions to the nearest supermarket. It's a bit of a Lidl moment at the Rotorua Pak 'n Save, but I manage to find enough veggie delights. Chores sorted I decide to start off my holiday activities with some inactivity at the Polynesian Spa. I opt for the slightly salacious sounding 'adults only' section. Fortunately, or unfortunately (depending on your proclivities) this just means no screaming kids jumping in the pools and splashing everyone rather than some car key swapping scenario. The pools are built on an historic Maori site The Pupunitanga, which means ambush, to remember the many battles fought here. Years later in 1882 ... read more

After reading how annoyed Intercity bus drivers get if you're not at the stop 15 minutes before the bus is due to depart, I made it a super efficient 25 minutes early and still wasn't the first. Stan our driver looks pretty ancient. I think it's the knee length socks setting off his wrinkly knees that gives this away. But he doesn't look that scary so when a couple of lads roll up 2 minutes before we're due to set off I'm not surprised that they escape with a bit of a whinge rather than a full blown rant. As we start to make our way out of Auckland I notice how many prefab style buildings there are, most with wooden shuttering and some with corrugated iron roofs. They actually seem quite cute and homey and ... read more

Yes, it really is another five hours flying time once you pass over Australia! But eventually the Chinese passengers are being told off AGAIN for ignoring the 'go back to your seats and put on your seat-belts' announcement that they've been ignoring all throughout the flight whenever we get a bit of turbulence, and we begin our descent. And beautiful it is too with lush green mountain folds giving way to a sun-sparkled sea dotted with islands surrounded by sighs of envy at realising people actually live on these mini spots of paradise. I know this won't last long as more people replace old passports, but for now I forgive my dreadful new passport photo for verily my new passport holdeth treasures of joy that help me queue jump like the VIP biatch that I really ... read more

Two flights of around 12 hours split by a stopover in Beijing of 9 hours. Doesn't seem so bad when it's written down in just one sentence does it? Trust me, if you can't sleep on a plane it's a killer! Luckily my crafty seat selections worked on both flights. Most people are flying with someone else and usually go to great lengths to ensure they are sitting together so putting myself in a two-seater isle seat virtually guarantees some extra legroom IF the flight isn't fully booked. I was supposed to get 4 hours free room time in the pay by the hour hotel IN the airport but the stupid Air China guy who I'd emailed about it had booked me into the Transit hotel outside the airport not the Transit lounge inside and there ... read more

Feeling uber excited at the start of my 'Journey to Middle Earth' sat on the train from Norwich to London. The title of my blog is of course a reference to The Hobbit whose film adaptations used New Zealand to evoke the other worldliness of Tolkien's fantastical imagination. I can't profess to being a particular fan, mostly because of Orks! Why all the rage and blood lust from dawn until dusk? What's their motivation? Instead of ripping out the guts of some poor unsuspecting random Middle Earth dweller why don't they just have a bit of a lie in before sauntering down to the local coffee shop for a frappeamericanolatecappocino (I'm a tea drinker, can you tell?) and a read of the Rivendell Review. Hobbit references aside I'm finding out a bit about New Zealand - ... read more
