Hello! Today was a travel day. We left Galway this morning and headed to Sligo. We made one stop and that was at Kylemore Abbey. We got to see the Abbey, the Gothic church, and the garden. It was pretty cool. The Benedictine Nuns purchased the Abbey after Mr. Kylemore passed away and no one else wanted to maintain the grounds. They turned it into a boarding school. The school remained open until 2010 when they had to shut down due to structural reasons. In 1994 they began restoring the garden. They finished restoring it in 1999. It is gorgeous! After the garden we went to the Gothic church. There was suppose to be a choir but they did not show up. We waited for a little bit, then we went to the gift shop and ... read more

Hi again! Today was a fun day! We had a lecture on abortion this morning and it was very interesting. Ireland is very strict when it comes to abortions. It is illegal to have an abortion unless the mother's life is in danger medically or she is at risk off suicide. This bill was just past. There has been a lot of controversy when it comes to abortion. Many women go to the UK to have an abortion if they want to have one. One of the main cases dealing with abortion in Ireland was the X case. This case involved a 14 year old girl who was raped and her parents took her to England for an abortion. The Irish government stopped her and brought her family back before anything happened. They were put under ... read more

Hello! Today was a relaxing day for us. I have been experiencing pain in my lower back and hip when we walk (which is everywhere we go). So, this morning I got to experience a doctor's office in Ireland. It is very different than the states. The doctor called me back and came in right behind me. He checked out the movement in my legs and asked me questions. I said yes sir and he said that he is not used to being called sir. He said it was nice. After the doctor I got my medicine and went back to the dorm. I ate lunch and got ready for a lecture. The lecture was ok. The guy was really nice. Then we walked back to the dorms in the rain. That was fun! We were ... read more

Hi! Today was a long traveling day! We left Killarney at 8:00 this morning and started our day. Our first stop was short one. We went to a beautiful waterfall! It was gorgeous! When I looked at my pictures, it looked like I took pictures of a picture and I stood in front of a green screen that was made to look like a waterfall. I did not do that, the waterfall was real and I am so glad I got to see it. After the waterfall we went to Muckross Farm. That was cool! We got to see a cow get milked and we saw the different size homes that the people lived in during that time. The number of cows a person had determined the size of their home. It was really neat to ... read more

Hello again! Today we traveled from Dublin to Killarney. We stopped a few times along the way. The first stop we made was in Cashel. We saw a couple a chapels. They were really cool. I had fun looking around. The church had no roof because there was a tax put on buildings with a roof. There were also some men buried on the grounds. One of them was the Protestant priest of the church, who was also the Catholic priest of a church in Northern Ireland. He believed people would mess with his grave so he couldn't go to haven so he had "I may or may not lie here" put on his tomb. He thought that would keep people from messing with his tomb. That was the coolest story in Cashel. Then we moved ... read more

Hello! Today was another free day. I got up and hung out downstairs for a while. Then other people came down and joined me. It was nice to use wifi. It was after noon when we decided to go out. We went to this nice little bistro called Copper Alley Bistro. It was the best meal I have had yet. I got a beef burger and chips. The people were really nice as well. After that we went to get ice cream. I didn't get any but the other three that I was with got some. After we left there we stopped at the Disney store. That was so much fun! I was able to get some birthday gifts for my nephew! The sales lady was really nice. I did not want to leave. After the ... read more

Hello! Today has been a good day! We had part two of the lecture. We talked about the Irish Civil Rights Movement. We learned about Bloody Sunday and all that came from it. Bloody Sunday was a horrible day in Irish history. After our lecture we went to the Natural History Museum. The museum was huge!! It took us a couple of hours to go through it. We got to see many different things dealing with the history of Ireland. We got to try on old uniforms and see the old planes and tanks used by the military. It was really neat! I really enjoyed the museum! After that we went to Guinness. That was neat. They taught us how to brew beer. It is a cool process. They even let us taste the beer if ... read more

Hello again!! So, this morning I woke up at 5:00 am. I felt well rested but a little tired. I decided that I would sleep a little more. I'm still getting adjusted to the time difference and jet-lag. It was finally time to get up and go for the day. We had a lecture to attend this morning. We set out for the place where the lecture was and ended up getting lost. We walked for over 2 miles before we found the place. We were thirty minutes late but we made it. Dr. Meehan lectured on the birth of Northern Ireland and the history of Ireland until 1968. She talked about the things that led up to the Irish Civil Rights. It was so neat to see the similarities between the Civil Rights Movement in ... read more

I am so excited to be in Ireland! My journey began yesterday in Birmingham and now I am in Dublin, Ireland! This morning we have been walking around Dublin. We have gotten to see some of the sites and gotten a brief history lesson on parts of Dublin. We saw the Christ Church and talked about the history. We saw where some of the vikings' homes were and how they were laid out. We toured Trinity College Dublin and learned about the history of the buildings. It was so neat to see the different buildings and hear about the men who built them. The man who built one building was fired because it was to plain. The men who built the natural history museum were fired because their building was too elaborate. Then we saw the ... read more
