Didn't think it rained much in Oz, but it does, and it's bigger and wetter rain here, and it seems to come without any warning. We've been chilling in our orange van, here at the lovely Rainbow Beach, sitting out the rain... '...Day 19 in the Big Brother Stupid Van: Captain Airwofl is rolling fags and now has a tidy store of 346 emergency smokes under his pillow. Pikey Pat's winning so far in the 'Grow A Hunchback' game, but Wofl's got a lead in the 'Cover Up The Holes On The Van Ceiling & Walls' sticker game as he eats more fruit...' ...We've seen a few 'Hippy Campers' around Rainbow and they look like newer vans with definitely better conversions inside - fridge, 240v hook up, kettle... and not that much dearer looking at the ... read more

We left Byron Bay, feeling at one with the surf and mother earth, only to be smacked in the face by the high-rise sight for sore eyes that is the Gold Coast. Who on earth let that happen? Surfer's Paradise it might once have been, but surely no self-respecting surfer REALLY thinks thinks that paradise is set in concrete 50 floors high? Surfer's.. cough.. Paradise must float some people's boats as it, together with the 35 km strip that makes up the Gold Coast, has reportedly over 2 million visitors a year. Not all coming to surf I bet... If you like theme parks, casinos, and shopping malls BIG TIME then you'd be delighted if, on completing the Gold Run on Blockbusters-can-I-have-a-'P'-please-Bob' you'd won a fortnight's 'trip of a lifetime' here. Maybe you've just got to ... read more

Headed on up the New South Wales coast, landing at a campsite in Ballina, near Lighthouse Beach. One of the things we've noticed is that some regular campers won't engage in eye contact, let alone conversation, when they see us by the van. Is it something to do with the colour of our van that upsets their sensibilities?? Or is it their pre-conceptions about people who hire Wicked campers? There's a notable difference between how fellow campers interact with us here compared to in NZ, and I'm sure it's not because Aussies are any less friendly than Kiwis. It's got to be something to do with the van, it can't be because we look like Pikeys! Looking at it, the van's a perfect illustration on the impact of branding. Essentially, they've got a fleet of old ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Coffs Harbour April 12th 2008

We headed further up the coast in the hope of dryer climes, arriving at Coffs Harbour, famous for it's surf and banana plantations. Stopped for lip-smacking fish and chips at the Fisherman's Co-operative on the marina by the harbour, and made our way to our base a little way up the coast in Arrawarra. The campsite kept us amused with its various wildlife roaming freely around the park - ducks, parrots, roos and a jewel of a diamond-back python who turned up unexpected in the cafe area as we're checking our email! Lich offered to do a Steve Urwin, but 2 girls from reception had bagged Sid in a pillowcase before he had the chance to do his heroics. People have said, 'Ooh, watch for all those snakes and spiders when you go to Australia'. It's ... read more

We've done about 450 km up the coast so far, stopping off at Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Port Macquarie along the way. The heavy downpours of rain over the past few days have surprised us, but it's autumn here so I suppose it's not going to be so mad hot and sunny... We've encountered a few examples of Aussie wildlife on our way, one particular introduction being quite unexpected and a bit of a lesson on being aware of what might be lurking in the dark! We were the only camper van on the site at Lake Macquarie, and since the clocks have gone back it gets dark around 6:00 pm. I was standing with the back of the van open, having a cup of tea talking to Steve when we heard a thud on ... read more

We drove in a Wickedly Orange way (back to map reading since we've no GPS maps for Oz!) to Meadowbank, a ferry wharf along the Parramatta River, and caught the Rivercat to heart of Sydney Harbour, sailing under the Harbour Bridge to Circular Quay. Had a look see around The Rocks district, near the Quay, where they have a weekend market selling all sorts of Aussie fayre - including roo jerky and skins! Forwent the roo jerky and had lush pastries in a fancy patisserie instead. Ventured over to the Harbour Bridge Pilot Lookout but decided not to part with the best part of $20 dollars to climb the 200 steps to the top, satisfied with the free view of the harbour and Opera House from the bridge. Countless people were parting with the best part ... read more

Our man in Australia, Wynski Bond, Commander 007.5333 recurring, and his assistant Sam Bond, Secret Agent 006.9 nearly 7, have been trailing the private criminal organization TANGO VAN MAN and its leader, Airwofl Lichmeister and his wife Pikey Pat, in 'Operation Wicked!'. On the morning of the 5th of April, Wynski and Sam manage to locate the whereabouts of Lichmeister's hide away, somewhere off the Old Windsor Road in Parklea, Sydney. Although heavily camouflaged and difficult to single out, the Bonds infiltrated Lichmeister's orange Wicked Van, to find the Lichmeister and Pat rolling Pikey fags and eating fudge. With the Lichmeister's cover blown, Wynski Bond made sure everyone on the camp knows who resides in the orange Wicked Van, and offered to do a few paint jobs on neighboring vans, much to their horror. After a ... read more

At the Kea depot we said our goodbyes to the van, and after a relatively nice flight we arrived safe and sound in Sydney. Spending a night in the Formule 1 hotel by the airport, we felt like caged birds after living in the van. We couldn't wait to pick up the new van and head off to the nearest campsite and resume Pikey Mode. So, this morning we headed off to the Wicked depot looking forward to meeting our new home for the next 6 weeks. And we were delighted to be given the really discrete and inconspicuous '007 Shaken' van; I suppose if you opt for a Wicked van it's designed to be noticed, and ours screams 'WICKED!' It's done 350,000 km and it looks and sounds like it! Somehow, we managed to find ... read more

We've just been looking through our blog at the things we've done over the past 6 months and we can't quite believe our time in NZ is coming to an end. We've had a great time here in NZ, and have met lots of friendly folk who have made us feel very welcome. Despite having cleaned the van inside and out and packed most of our stuff away, we're still somewhat in denial about handing the van over and being homeless and on the homestretch. We've given our fantastic BBQ to Pete who lives and works at the Arrowtown Camp whom we know will put it to good use, and perhaps give the odd sausage to Clarence the campsite cat. And we've posted back home most of the 'stuff' we've accumulated, in a huge box weighing ... read more

We've had a real mint time here in the lovely Arrowtown. Sadly, we've got to leave tomorrow to head over to Christchurch to sort out the van with Kea and hopefully get our buy-back deal completed before we fly out on 31st. We're very near the end of our 6 months tour of NZ. It's gone way too quickly, and we feel we're just settling into the pikey dream. Guess what though, today we tried a bit of the old panning in the Arrow River and lo and behold we found a flake! A real genuine speck of gold glistening in the pan amongst the black sand! When I say speck, I mean a smidgin dot, but it's gold nonetheless, which proves it's there to be had if you look hard enough. It's probably worth about ... read more
