Our trip began with an hour drive to Burlington Saturday afternoon. Our flight leaves at 5:45 am Sunday so we thought it best to get a hotel room close to the airport. Nice room with comfy king sized bed. We were both falling asleep watching TV at 4:30 pm so decided we’d better get an early dinner and picked the 99 Restaurant near the hotel. We sat at the bar, Freddie got a tropical drink made with their pineapple infused vodka, I had a yummy Manhattan….off to a great start. I got a text from my mother’s live-in aide agency…more aide drama…Fred said “shut your phone off”…I complied. After more cocktails and dinner we were waiting for our check, and nature called….no not in the way you usually think. Fred and I both had colds and ... read more

While having a lazy morning, we discussed our travel options for the day...Pisa was too far, other options were the small town of Orvieto or Tivoli. We opted for the shortest drive - Tivoli to see Hadrian's Villa...Villa Adriana. Tivoli is about 18 miles northeast of Rome, about a 45 minute drive from the house in La Guistiniana. Weather was sunny and warm, great for wandering through ancient Roman ruins....but Lizzie wasn't thrilled at all...she wanted to know how long it would be before we had lunch, even though she'd recently had breakfast. Hadrian's Villa is more of a town than just a villa...it's a large complex of many buildings over 250 acres. This was Hadrian's retreat from busy Rome and his palace on the Palatine Hill, during the 2nd century A.D.. Many of the marble ... read more

After getting Lizzie off to school, we did laundry and house keeping getting ready for Craig and Deb to come home and our departure on Sunday. We kept an eye on the weather, hoping the clouds would clear. We decided to head to the city about 11:30 and visit San Clemente....the old basilica near the coliseum. We got of the blue metro at the Coloseo station and started walking to San Clemente. The weather was "perfecto", finally a gorgeous fall day in Rome....I was sooo happy, happy, happy!!! We knew we were too late to visit it before it closed for the long lunch break so found a nearby trattoria. We got a table outside, next to three German ladies - one of whom was a nun. They listened as we ordered our lunch in really ... read more

So it seems our Coliseum tour guide was spot on when she said October is a rainy month. The original forecast for this whole week was partly sunny to sunny, then it changed to rain Sun-Tue, then rain for the whole week. We went into Rome with the intention of visiting Villa Borghese which has a world famous art collection and a large park around it....supposed to be beautiful. We got off at the Flaminio station and started walking towards the villa....we knew we were in the right spot when we saw all the tour buses. We passed the small artificial lake which was being dug up so only had the photo on a sign to see what it looked like when full of water. We passed other old fountains...long empty of water, small café, kids ... read more

We were up in time to see the Sox clinch the AL East title....YAY!!!!! If we were home, we'd have missed the celebration. We planned on taking the 7:06 train to get us to the Vatican by 8:10...our tour started at 8:30 am. We walked to the train station in a light drizzle, getting there in plenty of time, only to find the 6:44 train was delayed then cancelled, then the 7:06 was delayed 10 minutes. By now the platform was crowded with mostly high school aged students. We boarded the train, which was already full, standing room only. The train made more stops, packing in more people until we were squished like sardines. I could hardly breathe, it was so hot and humid in the train and honestly think I could have picked my feet ... read more

I awoke feeling much better after 24 hours of coughing, sneezing, chills and a fever. We were more than disappointed to hear the Sox didn't win game 3 of the playoffs, but Koji did his best. We hope Peavy comes through on game 4. Our not so friendly neighborhood dogs were outside and were kind enough to stick their heads through the hedge so we could photograph them. We got the 9:36 train into Rome, taking note of the black clouds all around as we walked to the local station. Rain was forecasted, we were armed with raincoats and an umbrella but still hoping it would be a quick morning storm then clear. We took the FR3 line, changed to the blue Metro line and getting off at the Coliseo station. The meeting place for our ... read more

I slept til 10 am, got up to find Miss Lizzie stayed home from school. She was still coughing, not getting any better so Zio Frederico insisted she skip school. Notifying the school was a little tricky, but with the help of a neighbor he got through and left a message. I was up for maybe 2 hours then went back to bed and there I stayed, getting up to take decongestants and a pain pill. Freddie took over the dinner chores, what a guy!!! We tour the coliseum tomorrow...lower and upper levels included, then on to the Roman Forum....tons of walking. Wednesday is a guided tour of the Vatican, so even though I felt guilty wasting a day, I wanted to be sure I was in good shape for those days. So lets talk about ... read more

The weather looked to be decent so after a breakfast of pancakes (Lizzie had mini chocolate chips in hers) and bacon, we took the local train to Rome. Lizzie still was feeling lousy and opted to stay home. We took the local train to the Ostiense station, walked a few block off course and missed the visitor's center that had maps and info. I had read somewhere that on Sundays, the Appian Way was closed to cars, wrong. There's hardly a shoulder to walk on and no place to jump out of the way if a car gets to close....there's tall stone walls on both sides of the road. We passed the church called Domine Quo Vadis where St. Peter is said to have had a vision of Christ. There's also supposed to be a set ... read more

Another quiet day on the home front...Lizzie at school, Fred back to bed, I did laundry, light house cleaning and groomed Mr. Miles. The 3 of us went into the city for dinner, got off the metro at Spagna. The fountain in the piazza is beautiful at night but I forgot to take a photo...sorry. We found the store that sells pods for Debbie's espresso machine and bought a bunch, including the two highest strength ones. Should be really good with the warm frothy milk for breakfast. We wandered the area, bypassing the pricier places and found a Viennese restaurant...Blanko...on Via della Croce... that served spatzle, sauerkraut, and red cabbage with traditional German beef and pork dishes. We decided to do in Rome what the Romans do so Lizzie and I had ravioli and Freddie a ... read more

Lizzie's feeling a little better and was a trooper and went to school. Freddie and I decided on a short trip to Rome so we could be home when Lizzie got home from school. When we boarded the local train, there were two armed police officers on the train plus a conductor who was checking tickets....that was a shocker! We showed our red passes and driver's licenses and that was sufficient for the conductor. We got off the Metro at Spagna and it was a short walk to the steps. There's also a fountain by Bernini, and a column topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary. I've read they put lots of flowers on the Spanish Steps in the spring and its beautiful. We then headed towards Trevi Fountain looking for a sit down place ... read more
