Vienna
We were in Vienna for last New Year's. What a fantastic city. The music is amazing, the foods superb and the people so friendly. 3 days is not enough. You will need to return.

Cycling
Did you ride along the Danube from Vienna to Bratislava? What was the track like?
14th September 2014

It was a great trail
Vienna to Bratislava was mainly a nice paved trail on top of the dike. Maybe a short bit was gravel, but that was fine. Also a short diversion at one point into surrounding countryside. All i alla great ride, which we easily did in one day.

This looks like a cycling journey I'm going to have to take myself at some point. I visited Austria years ago with my family what I really remember of that trip is my parents trying to corral and manage three (at the time) unruly boys. I went again after high school but stayed in Innsbruck & Salzburg. I love the bicycle tube vending machine. The picture of the pear tree reminded me I must head to your place to pick some pears & plums.

Great Photos and Blog!
Thanks for sharing your trip with us...it brought back memories of our trip. Passau was particularly fun for us, as we were hosted by friend of a friend who we still have contact with. Notice the many "Janh" Strassas and Pro Soccer Team Logos? This really took us by surprise! We look forward to your future blogs and visiting with you when you are back in Skagit Valley!

Trains + Bikes best practice
Amtrak is starting to slowly roll out more trains with capability to roll on normal sized bikes and stand them up like this. I see that I can't post a link so people will just have to Google it up...

Beer politics
Hi cousins! It looks you're trip started well. About "Budvar", it's definitely not the Czech version of Budweiser. The beers are completely different -- the issue is about trademark and branding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budweiser_trademark_dispute Indeed, Czech Pils or Pilsner is not for everyone, and as you might have noticed the locals drink a lot! I am not familiar with microbrews as I was not a big beer drinker when I lived there but there are a lot of different brands of beer which originated in the Czech Republic besides Budvar, and some or most of them are now owned by multi-nationals. I will try to remember my favourite brand to recommend by the time you are back in town....

Kafka Express
The Kafka Express - hmmmm . . . . I'm not sure if that gives one confidence. The trip so far looks and sounds amazing. I concur, the US could learn a lot from Europe: Whenever I'm biking down Highway 9 anticipating the next car speeding by or biking in the valley with the unused dikes holding back the Skagit River winding along beside me, I wish we were investing in bike lanes on all or most of our roadways & utilizing the dikes, ah well. Hope the skies clear for you as your journey continues. I love the bike carriers on the train.

Bikes loaded on the Kafka Express

The train looks very nice, though I think I would hesitate to get on a train called the Kafka Express. I would wonder if I would ever get to my destination.

Trail
We were there two years ago and told that trail was originally built for horses to pull boats down the river . Find out if there's any truth to that. Sounds like a wonderful trip

Danube
Hi...enjoyed your travel log this am. I wanted to pass on a good bike trail from Kelheim (near Regensburg) to Weltenburg Monastery. The trail follows the scenic Danube Gorge. You can bike one way and take the boat the other way. The Monastery serves a great lunch of kloster sausage, potatoes, and beer.

Great stuff!
I'm curious about the Greenway. What is this, bikes and foot only?
31st August 2014

Greenways, etc.
Al -- Danube route is a combination of separated and on-road and paved (mostly) and gravel. The Passau to Vienna section is the most heavily traveled bike route in Europe. Vienna-Prague Greenway is combo of same, but rougher, I think. Definitely hillier than the danube route. We will be describing in more detail over the next weeks, so read about it here :).

Picturesque Prague
So good to hear that you are off to a great start. Your excellent comments and photos bring back our fond memories of Prague. When you return look up the building cleverly called "the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers" building due to its dancing like architecture. Looking forward to reading more of your adventurous news.
