I am sending some pictures of the Cape Town Townships. There is so much history here of the pain of apartheid; you feel it in the air. People separate by race and the majority of South Africans still live this way. There were Black, Colored, Indian and White groups and living areas were divided by race. Still more then 50% of the population here lives in Townships.... read more

I just wanted to say, I woke up this morning to shear joy! I read all your comments and received many B-day wishes ( which I LOVED). More important were the many comments from those of you that see my journey, as something you would like to give some of your time and energy too! I am so proud that with only my eyes and a few thoughts put down, I have been able to whisper in a few people's ears, to help make a difference in our world. That is a B-day present that means more to me, then any material item. It is the gift of your heart, to care about people, you will never see or meet. I am so proud that a group of people, like me, who don't have money, fame, ... read more

Today is my birthday… I won’t mention which one but I will say that I have been dreading this one for a while. (By the way those that know how old I am, if you say it on the blog, I will not put it onJ) Spending this time in Africa has given me a new prospective on life and this is wonderful! I have made it to Cape Town, which is truly a striking city. It’s mountains and ocean are truly beautiful. I see why it is the top tourist location in Africa. As you fly into the city, the fog sits on the city and Table Mountain like a hat, on a lady, going for British High Tea. The air is crisp with the winter feel, but warm enough so you are still comfortable ... read more

I have made it to Johannesburg, South Africa; it was almost like arriving back in the United States. Suddenly, I am thrust back into traffic, Mc Donald’s, furniture stores and strip malls. I feel like I have left Africa and the transition is abrupt. For those that have only traveled to South Africa it is possible to be here and not truly see what the majority of what Africa is really like. This is a country of progress, High Speed Internet, Mercedes and TV commercials just like at home. Now don’t get me wrong, the poor here are as desperate as any in the world, but what South Africa has that the other countries that I have visited don’t, is opportunity. People here are have more opportunties then other nations in Africa, similar to the US. ... read more

The picture I took of those boys to me was the best way to describe some of what I have seen. Along with the beauty, the culture and the pride of Africa, you have to look into the eyes of children like these boys and see the pain too. I think they are wise beyond their years. I see great courage and strength despite their circumstances. I see the love they have for one another and the pride to stand there and be photographed by some silly American tourist. I keep saying, I want everyone to know both sides of life here, it can be good, kind and gentle. What has been the hardest for me is too enjoy the good, when the bad is simply outside the gate. In the US, what most, including myself, ... read more

Here everyone, my last blog was picked to be on the opening homepage of this site, that is pretty cool, that means maybe more will read these entries and simply realize how blessed we all are. I have made my way to Zambia. By, far these people seem the friendliest of those I have meet. I am not saying the other countries were not friendly, just more guarded in their reactions, with good reason I might add. Here it seems that they are really friendly and want you to have a positive impression of their coun, try so you will return someday. I have to say that I thought the Sheraton is Addis was the best hotel in the world, but The Royal Livingstone Lodge is far beyond that. It sits right on the Great Zambezi River ... read more

Today, we finally got out of the city to see how the majority of Zimbabweans live. There are many things to explain about life here. Going to Ethiopia and Zimbabwe is like night and day. The main reason is Ethiopia was the only country, in all of Africa, that wasn’t colonized by another country. The lay out of the country supports this. What I mean is, there really is not a civil plan. Their buildings and communities are just dotted around the city in no kind of order. 90% of the streets have no name so, a new person really struggles to get around within the city. Harare, on the other hand, was under Great Britain until independence in 1980. It looks very much like any western city you would visit. Civil planners designed this city ... read more

I just managed to get the last few blogs from Ethiopia on the site, so go backwards and find the ones you have not read. I am sorry, but I could only get 2 pictures to load onto the internet. Maybe I can catch up later with more pictures. There was not enough fuel to travel today, but we have fuel for tomorrow. That means I will get out of the city to see some of the countryside. Harare is just like any other city, except there are great shortages of goods. I went shopping in their department stores and the perfume cases contained one or two bottles. This was very strange to see. This city seems very much like those in the states, except, whites who live and work here stand out. More on that ... read more
