Kate in Africa's Guestbook

25th September 2007

Ohio is going to be a cold, cold place when you return. I hope you packed a sweatshirt for the trip back! haha. And, you done me proud, Kate, yelling at that Taxi driver. I oughtta give you a medal! In other news, Pittsburgh life has been fairly uneventful. And I really really hope you can come live with me in my Towa C!

Ooo Kate. I'm sure Sénégal will never be the same. Hope you're having fun and staying safe!!

Once again thanks for your reports Kate; it´s very intressting to read. How is the weather in Dakar? Is it raining a lot? Is it true that during the Ramadan there are no dans or open restaurants? I´m curios to know because I´ll soon go there.

That's so crazy. You should teach them some of our superstitions (pinch of salt, and ladders, and all that jazz) just to entertain the kids. :) And that is rather funny that they didn't know Jesus's name. Certainly made my night. And I wonder where your little brother went... Mischief-making perhaps?

Thank you Kate for your reports. I´m leaving for Dakar next week and are very intrested to hear everything about how it is during the Ramadan!!!

Kate, What is a Fantas?

Sounds like the perfect time to hit the beach! Not to mention, you can tell people what it's like to being in a predominantly Muslim country during Ramadan! That's pretty awesome. Also, so jealous for the Fanta.

Im so jealous, I want to leave Mentor

western food??
Where in the bush are they keeping you if you cant find westernfood in Dakar :) All the restaurants serve is western food I have tried once to find a nice senegalese restaurant to offer my guests but its impossible everything is "ála carte". And you can almost never be disapointed with the food you get and specially with the price...

Oh, Kate
This is too exciting! I'm listening to Rasputin and thinking of you. Eliza also wants you to know that you crack her up. I'll have to reassess some of the things is my package if you're paying out your butthole to have a couple of little things! Annnywho everyone says HI! And we <3 you tons! Martha, Eliza, Ryan, and Chase all give you props (and me of course)! Wanna give me a Senegalese name?

millet
Kate- first off I love reading your travel journal and your pictures. What an amazing experience! Before I left for school, I talked to your mom at Joann's (funny thing, I told her I bought some leopard print fabric and she was like 'why leopard?' and I wasn't sure why except that I like it). anyway-- the sour milk/millet thing sounds gross but I do feed my bird millet. (Pet parakeet). And he thinks its the GREATEST FOOD POSSIBLE. Millet is a treat for birds! haha I'm sure he'd love lakh, but then again, he's a bird... Tara

Survival of the fittest.
Kate, i miss you so much! and listen, you can do it! i mean think of it this way, you could be doing it for a longer duration now, and as Marcel Proust once indicated, "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes". Your blog entries are great! and your host brother in that picture is beyond adorable!!! soooooo cute!!!! i really do hope that your stomache gets adjusted to the food though! p/s: im glad that "someone" finally decided to get a travel blog! *cough* *cough* ;-)

That's too funny that you found a man who worked in the Senegalese embassy! At least he somewhat understood your dietary plight! <3 and IM me whenever you get the chance, chickadee!

Food cravings
Wow Kate, I gotta hand it to you.. I'm impressed with your food tolerance despite your little sickness. I'm on my way now to a squid-in-squid-ink lunch (blehhh) so I'm feeling you.. although i at least have the option of pizza for dinner! my list is: mac and cheese (you'd think it'd be possible in italy but its not) sweet potato (i'd kill for it) french fries with cheddar cheese sauce philly cheese steak
