1:12 We've made our way from Brussels into Germany now. We got as far as Köln, where we made a pit stop to sing mass in the cathedral there. It wasn't our best performance, but any means - there were tuning issues and such fun, but we still managed to pull off the the pieces we needed to sing. The cathedral is just as lovely as it was four years ago; it's a shame that we didn't have more time to explore... Or more properly that I didn't have time to explore any other bits of the town this time instead of the cathedral. We're back on the bus for the long haul now, on our way to Halberstadt, where we have a charity concert to sing as part of the festival this evening. It's going ... read more

8:35 up and on the bus for Brussels today via a tulip farm and some windmills, apparently, so this should be pretty cool! We're only a few minutes out of town and have already managed to see a number of huge wind turbines, as well as a proper old windmill. Several old windmills. The Netherlands are definitely living up to their windmill-y stereotype, that's for sure. We also passed a place called Baby Dump, which provoked a lot of curiosity. I don't know if we'll ever find out what it was. I just realised that this will be one of the few countries where I have not set foot in a proper graveyard/cemetery. Hmm... A little disappointed, actually. I doubt I'll manage in Belgium, though, either, so I guess my graveyard cred is going to have ... read more

After a fitful night's sleep, we set out this morning from the hotel for the Anne Frank house, the musem and old house where Anne Frank, her family and acquaintances hid from the occupying forces in the Second World War. They hid for two year, which to me is utterly amazing - imagine not leaving your house for two years, not seeing proper daylight for two years, having to be quiet for most of the day... The house itself is unfurnished now, per the wishes of Otto, Anne's father, but it still gives you a sense of the space in which those folks were stuck. i did fairly well for myself, until they show a video of Otto, speaking about his experiences in coming out of the concentration camps, and realising that he was the only ... read more

15:55 I maybe slept for 15 minutes on the plane. I'm exhausted. The last two hours of the flight I kinda just wanted to pull my brain out of my head with a pitchfork, I was so exhausted. But eventually we landed, my luggage made it, and I am fighting to stay awake past dinner so that I actually sleep tonight and get into a good routine right off the bat. 22:30 My first impression of Amsterdam was essentially "holy crap there are a lot of bicycles here". If you've been, you'll know what I mean. If you haven't, then believe me, there are a lot of bicycles. And scooters. But bicycles, really. Bike lanes everywhere. Bikes get their own traffic signals here. It's really cool, actually. I still haven't entirely sorted out the flow of ... read more

1:30 pm And thus begins our tour. My friend Roxanne dropped me off outside the church where we were meant to be meeting our bus, at the time we were meant to be meeting our bus... And there was no bus. So we waited. The time arrived when we were meant to be departing in the bus... And there was no bus. So we waited. Fortunately it was a lovely, sunshiny day, and waiting around outside was not that much of a hardship. The bus finally showed up about 20 mins late. We shoved our stuff underneath and we were off! Sadly. This means that our trip to the Donut Mill in Red Deer may be curtailed and/or skipped entirely. Sadness. 9:30 pm somewhere over Labrador, according to the satellite map thingy on the plane. So, ... read more

Hullo, and welcome to my revived travel blog... I'll get started in earnest on Saturday when I actually leave for Europe... but in the meantime... Something is seriously, seriously wrong. I'm packing and it looks like everything I want to take is going to fit in my backpack on the first try. This NEVER happens to me. This is making me seriously wonder what I'm forgetting. And honestly, I can't think of what I could possibly be forgetting. I've made lists. I've cross-referenced the lists with one another (yes, I am that much of a nerd). There are electronic lists and paper lists. I have been checking things off methodically as I add them. Or maybe because I've been traveling so much for work over the last little while I've managed to actually become really good ... read more

Spent yesterday in Mainz with Nicky, doing some shopping. Picked up an extra bag to put some of my stuff in so that it wouldn't get lost if AC f'd up again (in all honesty, I haven't had too many bad experiences with Air Canada, unlike some people, but they have managed to lose my bags once, and they've also managed to destroy one of my backpacks, so...), and some really nifty shoes... Today it was off to the airport - bus into Mainz HBF, train from Mainz to Frankfurt airport. 10-hour flight from Frankfurt to Calgary, then a short hop from Calgary back up to Edmonton. My parents met me at the airport and took me to dinner, which was lovely. I'm not sure how I feel about being home. No, that's a lie, I'm ... read more

So the Rhineland.... absolutely gorgeous. The train I took today from Mainz to Köln follows the Rhine and it was nearly impossible to stop staring out the window. Honestly. I tried to start writing this entry on the train, but had to put down the iPhone. I was too afraid that I'd miss a castle or a chateau on the river bank, or miss seeing a small town with an amazing church.... or the vineyards that seem cut into the rock on the hills lining the river valley. I think this is probably the Germany of my imagination, and that's part of the reason I'm loving it so much. I had decided to head to Köln for the day today. I had no real plan other than to see the cathedral there, as I was in ... read more

I'm taking the last few days of my vacation pretty chill. I really don't intend to do too much. And that was what today was all about. I think I finally rolled out of bed around 9... lounged and munched breakfast/had coffee until well after 11, did a load of laundry (which was an adventure... First, trying to find the laundry room in Nicky's building... down to the cellar, hang a right, and trying to find a door that had something about washing on it... given my craptastic German... turns out it was the first door on the right, as I determined on my second pass. Then there were the washing machines themselves. Entirely in German, as were the instructions. I'm pretty sure I washed my clothes in cold water, as there seemed to be temperature ... read more

Was not nearly as hung over this morning as I thought I might be, which is pretty good, although I seem to have done something to my foot - and have some mysterious bruises that are probably from bumping into benches in beer halls and the like (one particularly nasty one right at shin level I think I owe to the bench at the Hofbrauhaus...), but having said that, I get mysterious bruises when perfectly sober, so whatever. The foot is not a mystery - I actually injured it on the 2nd, I think - I was getting off the escalator at the Munich HBF, and felt something in my left foot... not snap, precisely, but there was definitely something that moved in a way it shouldn't have, and there was a major pain for a ... read more
