Europe » Italy » Liguria » Moneglia October 20th 2011

My first impression of Italy was a fun one as they played the Call to the Post song (the song typically played with a trumpet before a horse race) when the plane landed and everyone clapped and cheered for the pilot for landing the plane. The Italian uproar was exactly how I imagined it would be. How fun! We struggled a little bit at first trying to figure out how we would get from the Pisa airport to Moneglia—the small town that we would be spending our first two nights in, but eventually we figured it out. The people at the information desk and the ticket counter were grumpy and difficult to understand, but we found some nice people to guide us to the bus stop. After taking a train to Sevilla, a bus to the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Cádiz October 19th 2011

I had class today from 9:30-1:00. I ate lunch with my host family and then walked to the beach to meet my parents for a relaxing afternoon. They seem to be enjoying Cádiz so far (except for the sparse bathroom situation). The tide was extremely low and the water was a little cold, so for the most part we just laid in the sand and talked about our plans for the day. At 6:30, Mom and Dad came to my house and put their luggage in my room so they wouldn’t have to drag it all the way to Italy. They finally got to meet my roommate Hayley and they like her a lot, which is not surprising because she is an amazing friend and roommate! I had no idea how meeting my host family was ... read more

Europe » Spain October 18th 2011

Tonight I picked my parents up from the train station at 6:30. I was drained from getting back so late from Paris and having an early class, but the minute I saw them I had a sudden burst of energy. I have missed them a lot over the last two months. I miss my siblings a lot, but as one of four children, it is a rare and welcomed opportunity to spend one on one time with my parents. I am so happy that I get to share this experience with them and that when I talk about things from now on they will be able to visualize it and understand me. They will meet my host family tomorrow, I am nervous!... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris October 17th 2011

Our last day is Paris was pretty much a fast paced marathon to go to all of the places Brian, Natalie, Devin, Hayley and I wanted to see before we had to leave at 2:30. We started by taking the metro to this beautiful garden/park in the outskirts of Paris that Devin had learned about through a friend who is studying in Paris. There are waterfalls, bridges, ponds, green grass, tunnels, and the best part… hardly any people. A few people were jogging or sitting on a park bench, but other than that it was extremely peaceful. We power-walked to the metro so we could meet up with Brian who had decided to go to a church while we were at the park. I wanted to go to the Eiffel Tower one last time before leaving ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris October 16th 2011

Today was a free day, which naturally started with a huge breakfast at the hotel. At 9:45, Hayley, Natalie, Brian, Devin and I took the RER to Versailles. We entered in the garden, which seemed to go on for miles. The weather was crisp and felt like fall back home. Everywhere I turned there was green grass, beautiful fountains, trees with leaves that we in the process of changing color and fluttering to the ground. There isn’t any space in Cádiz for grass or trees so it was a really nice change of scenery for us. We took a tram down to Marie Antoinette’s house and garden. I personally don’t have much of an interest in Marie Antoinette, so seeing her house was of little importance to me, but I enjoyed having Natalie tell me about ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris October 15th 2011

Today began with breakfast at our hotel at 9 AM. It was incredible. The pastries and crepes were incredible. We filled up as much as we could to minimize the amount of money we would have to spend on food for the rest of the day. At 10 AM our entire API group (which was a combination of the 8 students from Cádiz and also the overwhelming number of students from Sevilla) went on a 2 ½ bus tour. It was nice to see the city, but I felt like I didn’t get to enjoy what we were looking at because I didn’t have time to take it in. We stopped for 15 minutes at the Eiffel tower so that we could walk around and take pictures, but other than that I felt that the experience ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris October 14th 2011

October 14th, 2011 I can’t decide how I feel about Paris. Before I left, I wasn’t very excited to come here. I haven’t studied to language or the culture or the history so I wasn’t as interested in Paris as I have been in the Spanish cities we have traveled to. This is the first place that has a true language barrier for me. I can’t understand what people say, but sometimes if it is written the words are similar to Spanish. I thought the people here would be extremely rude and would automatically not like us because we are Americans, but so far everyone has been extremely accommodating. The food is great so far. We arrived in Paris around 11 PM so a lot of places were closed, but we found a little Italian restaurant ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Cádiz October 13th 2011

Monday was entertaining, because we had a discussion in class about the evolution of gender equality over time. I learned that men and women both get maternity leave in a lot of countries. In most of the countries the maternity leave is significantly shorter for the men, however in one country, both the mother and the father get 4 months! That seems a bit extreme to me… but to each his own! Our professor also took a poll on how many of us had grandmothers who went to college. I was shocked to see that only one student besides myself had a grandmother with a college degree. A girl in the back of the room said “well it is different for her because she lives in America”, which made me realize how many more opportunities ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos October 10th 2011

Our trip to Lagos was one that I will never forget. Before we left, things were chaotic. The original plan was for Hayley, Devin, Susan, Meghan, and myself to rent a car from Jerez and drive it to Lagos where we would meet up with our friend Tegan. The day before we were suppose to depart, Susan tells me that she decided not to go. She made a few excuses but none of them were valid. Susan’s lack of consideration created a huge problem for the rest of us because Susan is the only one of us who is over the age of 21 and therefore, the only person who could sign for the car. We were angry, frustrated, and upset that she put us in this situation less than 24 hours before we were suppose ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Cádiz October 2nd 2011

Due to the fact that I found a cockroach in my bed, I am attempting to pull an all-nighter so that I can sit safely on this stool, which has become my fortress of safety. I will update you on the yesterday and today. Last night I went to a bar called Woodstock with some friends from school. It was pretty low key, we were getting to know someone new who just came to Cadiz yesterday from Mexico. She said she was having a difficult time understanding the accent here. We didn't stay out too late (at least not by Spanish standards), we got home around 1:30 in the morning. Our host brother and sister usually don't get in until 7 in the morning! I went and had breakfast with Devin and Hayley this morning in ... read more
