Today I woke up in the morning to take a trip to Manly, a neighborhood far north of Coogee that requires us to take a ferry for 45 minutes. The first thing all of us wanted to do was eat, so we went to the first place we saw, “Gourmet Pizza.” It was here that I accomplished the first of many goals for Australia: to eat kangaroo. It was actually pretty delicious, but it did not come in the form I was expecting. It was more like a beef jerky than the sausage that I was expecting. Either way, though, it was good. After lunch we met up on the beach to play a little ultimate Frisbee. Many of the Europeans were struggling a bit with it, but it was fun. Then we took a walk ... read more

Today after orientation we went on a pub crawl of the rocks. It was beautiful and I finally got my first views of the Sydney opera House. We started drinking on our tour at about 2pm and didn’t go home until about 8ish. After that, several of my friends and I went back to Coogee to get the most delicious $2 steak ever. While I was downtown, I also had my first encounter with a street performer today. He performed a stunt called the flying “Camel of Death.” I'll try to included a video of this for your benefit.... read more

Today was a rainy, lazy day. I woke up around 9am and made myself a breakfast of French Toast and Scrambled eggs. I’m pretty certain that’s more than I ever cooked in my apartment at school, so it was a good start. After breakfast I decided to do the “beach walk,” a path that connects the beach I live on to a beach about 4 miles to the north, Bondi (Bond-eye) Beach. I walked about half way there when it started to rain more and I got cold and walked back. I’ve included pictures of this walk in this blog. I really enjoyed it because there are cliffs that look out over the ocean which you can sit on and peer over the edge. It’s a quite a view. The rest of my day was spent ... read more

Today I get to move into the house that I’ll be living in for the next 4.5 months. I’m up currently at 7:30 waiting to head out to the university to sign my lease and get my keys. I was told last night that the internet companies pretty much only have contracts for 2 years. Sean said that usually the landlord contracts with the internet company, then the tenant pays the cost of the service during their stay. However, the Uni has already told me that Internet is not included…I hope that doesn’t meant I’ll need to buy a antenna from the phone company that will let me get internet through the Cell Phone towers… … I’ve moved into my house to find that the internet service of the previous occupants has not yet been canceled. ... read more

After an extremely long journey I am finally in Australia. Unfortunately, I have no place to stay yet and pretty much the entire University seems to be on Holiday, but at least I’m done travelling. The flights here were both very interesting: the first, because I sat next to a 22 year old girl from LA while we both took advantage of the free alcohol, and the second because of all the cool things I encountered in Business Class. (On demand movies/tv shows, reclining chairs, and seemingly endless food, to name a few). I was able to get a lot of sleep, despite a baby who liked to cry just as my sleep was getting most fulfilling. Once I got out of the plane, getting through customs and immigration was a breeze because we were one ... read more

Well, today is my last day in Bilbao. It’s a little bit sad leaving, but mostly I’m ready to go home. Spain was wonderful and all, it’s just that it’s not the United States. I need to live in a country where if I’m hungry at 1:00 AM I can drive down the street and find several extremely unhealthy options. Spain is not that country. I had my two finals today. I would be worried about them, but I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to get less than a B on both of them. I don’t know if they’re making classes easier because we’re Americas….or if it’s because it summer school, or if this is just how university in Spain goes. Whichever it is, it’s fine by me. Earning 6 easy credits for UIUC while in Spain ... read more

I know what you’ve been asking yourself: “Where has Jeff gone, and what will I do without his witty, informative blogs?” The answer is that I’ve been around and, well, you seem to have survived. Seriously, though, I really haven’t been doing much of anything. Going to classes and taking siestas are what take up most of my days. I figure that monotony here in Spain is still better than monotony in the United States. I’ve decided to include a few more pictures of my Dorm so you can see a little more accurately what it is to live in a dorm in Bilbao. Besides that…what to say…I went to get pizza at a pizzeria near the Guggenheim today. It’s no deep dish, but what can you do? I will most likely be going to ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Biarritz July 14th 2007

The title of this entry is appropriate for two reasons: 1) I went to France for the whole day today; and 2) These are the only two useful phrases I know in French (there is one more, but saying “Shut your mouth” is only useful in so many situations). Some of my friends and I took a bus for only 16€ from Bilbao, Spain, to Biarritz, France. It was a little less than a 3 hour drive and because both France and Spain are EU countries, I might as well have been driving from Illinois to Wisconsin—no passport needed (Just one more reason I like the EU: Free movement of people, goods, and money between EU countries). Despite my lack of knowledge of French, it was relatively easy to communicate with shop owners in Biarritz. ... read more

Today I did two very American things, both of which I did with my “social host,” Iratxe. The original plan was for a group of us to go with Iratxe to the beach in Sopelana. However, it was raining all day and was to cold for the beach so instead we decided to go to Getxo (a nearby town) to see Harry Potter. When we got to Getxo by metro, we had about 90 minutes until the movie started. In this time I did my first Very American Thing: Go to McDonald’s. Yes, I ate a quarter-pounder and it was…gross (just like in the US ). More than gross, though, it was expensive! It cost me somewhere around $9 USD to eat what they call “comida basura” here. (AKA junk food). But, on the plus side, ... read more

url='/Videos/4250.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/4250.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'Entering I went to the festival of San Fermin today (Aka, the running of the bulls). No, I didn’t run with the bulls, though I would consider it at a future, crazier date. I had to wake up at 4 am this morning to be at the bus by 5. After some confusion over whether the phone was ringing or my alarm was going off (it happened to be the latter; after several minutes of being confused as to why the phone wouldn’t stop ringing when I picked it up, I realized my mistake) I got ready an boarded the bus for the 2 hour drive to Pamplona. Once in Pamplona we made our way directly to the corral where the Bulls end up after the run (I didn’t actually see the run itself ... read more
