Day 22: Week 4: Sunday 28th. May 2006: Clear and sunny - lovely: Bussed to Oulu and staying in a self contained (great kitchen) cabin in the delightful camping ground at Nallikari. We look forward to doing our own cooking again and having a decent meal, though we only had a snack tonight. We are a stone's throw from the water (Bothia Sea) and beach. Bus stop at the end of driveway takes us into town. Fantastic storm tonight, thunder and lightning. Day 23: 29th. May 2006: Raining: Into town by bus and had a walk around. Very pretty, interesting place with many beautiful buildings, parks and gardens. Home for lunch then a walk into town in the pouring rain across a long bridge, but I was determined to take some video here. so we ... read more

Day 20: Raining on- off: Our hostel was at a ski resort, by a bus stop and easy to find + brekky included. Went into town for a walk around then up the hill to the Jyvaskyla ridge and observation tower. Our meals for breakfast, lunch and tea was rolls, cheese and meat - oh dear! At least the weather was not as cold as Helsinki. Day 21: Cloudy, cool and not raining yet: We were told to go and look at the gardens - we went on Bus 15 - the gardens were lovely but just like Waldecks. Back to town we walked around the harbour then onto Naissaari Island of beautiful wooden houses, an Old Power Station as well as a beach for swimming (Oh Yeah!). A signposted path circles the island. Day 19: Clear, sunny and cold: A train journey to Lahti, check into our hotel - hostel and a walk into town. Again the weather was cold, so we thought something hot to eat would be nice. Down by the lake are lots of eating places. We chose one where we queued up, cut off a chunk of bread and a slab of butter from the pat and then were given a bowl of home made pea soup with chunks of bacon in it, then a nice fresh doughnut. We sat outside at bench seats and table which overlooked the lake that goes up to Jyvaskyla (not the lake in the photos). Check out the "little bit of Australia" in one of the photos. ... read more

Day 15: (21st May) We arrived safely, checked into the hostel at Olymic Stadium, a quick walk around the area and by the lake, to an ATM , then shops for food. Day 16: Monday 22nd: Bright sunshine and warm: Today we started looking around sunny Helsinki by going by ferry to Suomenlinna Fort (4 islands) built by the Swedes in the 18th. century. Very interesting day walking around the islands. Day 17: Cloudy, cold and raining: the weather had changed to rain and more rain. We sorted out our travel plans for the next few journeys, went shopping for gloves as Vera was feeezing ( I already had a pair), had lunch at MacDonald's as it was the only recognizable food. We had a Helsinki Pass so used it again to take a ferry ... read more

Day 1 - Day 2: Week 1: Clear, sunny day; Departing Perth on the 7th May we flew to Japan (drizzly day) arriving on 8th May 2006. We were met by Richard (Vera's son) and spent a quiet day chatting and planning the next couple of weeks. Day 3: Cool, overcast: Fortunate for that quiet day as the next morning we were up early to go to the Fish Market to see the tuna auction. There is a viewing area for vistors, though we arrived too late for the auction we could see the tuna being moved and some being sawn up before packing. There was a lot of movement around with fork lifts and motorised trollies whizzing everywhere. The area was quite dangerous with this traffic, wet and slippery floors and lots of people. As ... read more

A 3 day outback camping tour in the Pilbara and Karijini National Park, then our stay at Cossack in 2003 The Pilbara is the heart of Western Australia's huge iron ore mining industry. On the drive across the country into the Karijini National Park the landscape is so varied with colours from daybreak to sunset changing as fast as the sun moves across the sky. The heat of the day changes accordingly and when you step down into the gorges the temperature drops but the water may be freezing so hypothermia can be a problem. We camped out under the stars and beside an Aussie icon, the windmill, in sleeping bags that kept us warm at night but had ice on them when we woke in the morning as temperatures drop low after sunset. Cossack is ... read more
