18th January 2008 The main news today is that it did rain, well just a few spots for about half an hour. After that it cleared up and we are back to 28 degrees. It actually feels hotter than that because it is also very humid. Today Bob and Vern had a boy's day in and mowed the grass and cut the second hedge. Bob enjoys playing with all Vern's big boys toys like driving the tractor or mower. The motorised picking machine though is a bit scary as you can drive it forwards or backwards whilst going up and down to pick the avocado's at a height of 4.5 metres, when Bob was driving it lurched so badly he was convinced it would topple over. Meanwhile Annette and I had a girls day out and ... read more

17th January 2008 Last night we stopped in L0redo Motel, Kataia. This morning Sand Safaris a tour company picked us up from the motel and took us on a tour up 90 mile beach to the very North of Northland, Cape Reinga. On the way we stopped at Aupouri where we saw the different products that are made from the ancient Kauri trees. These trees are quite incredible as some of them can be up to 4,000 years old and up to 32 metres in girth. Also many of them have been dug up from the peat or swamps and are still in good condition and the wood has a lovely golden colour when sawn and polished. The most impressive feature of the workshop was a flight of stairs hewn out of the centre of one ... read more

16th January 2008 This morning after a pleasant 2 hour walk (which Vernon told us was a half hour stroll) along the beach edge and cliff tops to Opua, where Annette picked us up. We left Pahaia and headed further north. We stopped at Waitangi where the Treaty with the Maori was signed 160 years ago. We had coffee in a lovely cafe entertained by two fantails sitting above us in the rafters. We are not sure what they were doing but we did move from the table directly underneath them. We stopped at the Marsden Estate Winnery for lunch which was served in a lovely open air dinning room overlooking the gardens and the vineyard. More photos of course. We carried on to the Pukeiti Reserve to see the native Kauri trees. The trees were ... read more

15th January 2008 Today we hit the road and left Vernon and Annette's house to drive North. For the first time since we arrived it was a rather cloudy day but still about 21 degrees. On the way we called into Whangargi to see some kiwis but we arrived to early before it had opened. We pressed on and called into Mangakahia Road, Titoki, to see Vernon and Annette's previous property, a 660 acre dairy farm with 450 head of milking cattle. It had a very similar look to a Devon valley surrounded by rolling hills with a river running through the valley. Very suitable for a Devon lad like Vern. Carrying on further North we arrived at Pahia where we had booked a motel for the night, by this time the skies had cleared and ... read more

14th January 2008 We are settling in nicely at Vernon and Annettes house in Mangawhai. Last night under the stars we sat soaking in the hot tub on their decking. Much to Dinah, Annette and Vernon's surprise, Bob entered the hot tub in his Birthday Suit!! Today we helped cut the hedge in preparation for our trip further North for 3 days before returning to pack for the trek South. The life here is idyllic, quiet, unrushed and in beautiful surroundings. we visited a lovely shell beach Te Arai, this afternoon and I was indulged by being allowed to take a few photos!! .... Discovered you can't get good help these days, Dinah and Bob did help us to trim the hedge, but only narrowly missed taking out an avocado tree in the process. Lovely to ... read more

13 January 2008 We are now in New Zealand with Vernon and Annette Dark. They met us at the airport in Auckland and we have now set up residence in their house. It feels a bit strange being upside down on the bottom of the world, but it just could be the effects of Jet lag having travelled economy class overnight from Hong Kong to Auckland yesterday. As usual Bob is playing up but it shows how much better he is despite the awful cough! The Darks house is lovely, built by themselves on a hill to take in the magnificent views all around. Whether I can capture them on camera remains to be seen (the views not the Darks, they will be in the photos whether they like it or not!). The plants and wildlife ... read more

11th January 2008 Today we had a conducted tour of the 5 star Shangri-la with Mari and saw the 52 metre high Chinese painting specially comissioned for the hotel which is in the Guiness book of records. Tried to photograph it but it is a bit big even for wide angle lens. Just thought you would all like this picture of some balancing terrapins in the Aviary gardens below the Peak which we visited today. More later. We went up Peak Tramway but visibility at top was very poor because of low cloud. Had a nice meal at the old Peak Lookout resturant. As promised we have added a few more pictures. The aviary where we walked to get to the railway was really lovely with exotic birds flying past our heads and beautiful butterflies fluttering by. ... read more

10th January 2008 We went around North Point on Hong Kong Island last night but quickly realised we were quite tired and after Bob had sampled the chinese equivqlent of Macdonalds at cafe de Coral we went back to our comfortable room on the 22nd floor and slept a bit. Up at 7.oclock as we were so hungry and had a liesurely breakfast of everything imaginable as we watched the chinese children scurrying to school in the rain.(It is winter here) We met Bob's scouting friend Mike Williamson for a visit to a beautiful modern reconstruction of a typical Chinese garden.. A lovely quiet oasis in a busy city. Across the road we visited the Buddist nunnery, the Wong Tai Sun Temple and gardens with many different temples and beautiful lotus flowers. After a nice lunch ... read more

Wednesday 9th January - Hong Kong After a lift from home to Birmingham Airport from Graham. We caught a National Express coach to Heathrow yesterday lunchtime in the pouring rain. At Heathrow we met up with Neal and Carine. Carine had worked magic as a BA employee and when we boarded our aircraft we were taken aside and asked to wait in the crew's kitchen before being upgraded to Club Class, much to our surprise! This is reccomended travel as we slept in our own little pod with in flight screens and FLAT beds.l We had an excellent choice of food and superior wine and slept very well. After 11 hours we landed at Hong Airport and transfered by the Airport Express into the city where we caught a taxi to our hotel 10 minutes from ... read more
