Day 5 - Barstow to Lake Isabella, Distance Travelled 133 miles. Well we thought we were off to an early start with the alarm set for 8-30 this morning but upon opening the door we found that we were just about the only ones left in a campsite that had been packed with 40+ RV's the previous night! I just put it down to Shas's snoring! Still at least it meant the showers and loos were quiet! Yes we use the site facilities rather than the RV where we can, for 2 reasons: 1) there is much more room in a big camp shower (which have been spotless so far) than in the RV and 2) if you use the camp facilities, then that's fewer times you have to go through the fun and games of ... read more

Day 4 - Las Vegas to Barstow, Distance Travelled 157 miles So here we go, time to say goodbye to Las Vegas and luxury and hello to the good old 30 foot RV and back to basics... It was an early start as we knew we had some distance to travel and we weren't sure how long everything would take. A 7:00 alarm call was a massive shock to the system after the previous evenings wine and late night gambling session. Breakfast consisted of 'as much coffee, orange juice and toast' that room service could deliver to the room on one of those silly little tables, but it did the trick. Suitably revived, we packed, cashed in the thousands of chips we had won over the weekend (no need to call securicor for that!) and picked ... read more

Day 3, Las Vegas - Distance Travelled about 1 mile Ok, so last full day in Vegas so we had to make it a good one....starting with the obligatory 'All you can eat buffet breakfast' which will mean more pain in the gym when i get home. First up was a trip to The Mirage to see their Dolphin and Tiger habitat, usually this would mean a walk along the strip to get there, but with such huge interlinked hotels in Vegas you can usually 'hotel hop' your way up and down thereby utilising the air conditioning to the max and reducing exposure to beggars, Mickey Mouse photo opportunities and the scary 'rent a girl' brigade. Our hotel hop took us through Ceasars Palace....not quite as impressive as Crystal Palace but nevertheless worth a look. Gaming ... read more

Day 2 Las Vegas, Distance Travelled - 200 metres (bed - food - pool - food - gamble - bed!) After an exhausting first day it was time to chill...first came the breakfast buffet which appeared to be exactly the same buffet as the previous night but with omelettes, bacon and toast added. This was confirmed when the Japanese couple next to us appeared to sit down to a full roast beef dinner with yorkshire pud for him and a crab and prawn shellfish platter for her, at 9-30 in the morning! Only in the USA! Still a bargain at $19 and the gym work is a distant memory! After that we hit the pool avoiding expensive sunbeds and cabanas and having carefully worked out the trajectory of the sun so Shas would get maximum tanning ... read more

Day 1 London Gatwick to Las Vegas, Distance Travelled - A lot! So day 1 of Shas and Jason's big adventure started early in the UK with a 6am alarm clock for the Cab to Gatwick....Gatwick is changing beyond all recognition from when I used to use it a lot. Security now upstairs, Garfunkels gone (traditional pre holiday breakfast stop), huge new duty free where the old security used to be and nowhere to sit! Breakfast in cafe rouge was extortionate but much needed before the flight. We tried for the usual grovelling upgrade at the airline desk but were informed the plane was packed....and it was, mainly with stag do's of young blokes from Essex and Bristol most of whom seemed to have been in the bar since 7am. The two young idiots behind us ... read more
