Hello everybody. Poor little Susie's sick. We forgot that she's not supposed to have any alcohol with the tablets she's been taking, but we had a few glasses of wine at the wine bar last night and now she's not feeling so good. Hopefully it doesn't last long. We had a bit of a look around today, but it was hard for Susie to walk too far because she's sick in the stomach and has a headache, so we just saw a few things and then called it a day unfortunately.ol though, a few of the old ruins that haven't been restored, and there's no public access to them. I really like that, because you do feel like you're looking at something special, and you get a sense of the fact that it's 2000 years old. ... read more

Hello everybody! Rome has given me some faith that Italy isn't a complete waste of time and money. Actually, that's a bit unfair, it's not been so bad, but Rome has definitely been an improvement anyway. The people have been helpful, and the city itself is amazing. We arrived a bit after lunchtime, and since it stays light for so long, we were able to see a few things before bed-time. Getting to our accommodation was a bit of an effort. We were supposed to be staying in a nice little place, the only place we had fully prepaid before we got to Europe. But when we arrived we found out that to get there, we would have to catch the Metro all the way out of Rome, then catch another bus, if there is one, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence September 7th 2007

Hello everybody. I'm very cranky because I typed up a massive blog and then it deleted everything except for "Hello everybody"...the only bit I hadn't had to think about. So I'm going to do it all again. With reduced enthusiasm. Sorry it's been so long between posts, it's quite difficult to find internet cafes where we've been. Hopefully I won't get too confused with what day we did what. Today, we went to the Uffizi gallery, which was great, except for the queues. It literally took us two hours to get into the museum, but I think that's probably because we got there late. When you get in there, it's quite good, because unlike most of the other galleries in Europe, you can get quite close to some super-famous paintings. At the Louvre it was a ... read more

Hello everybody. We're still a bit undecided about Florence. It's got some great things...we saw Michelangelo's David today, which was obviously fantastic, but it's just a strange place. For example, the museum the David is housed in, you would easily walk past it if it wasn't for the massive queue outside. It's just another dumpy building. That's the thing about Florence...I've been working on this illustration all day... You know when you play with a kid, and it's fun for a few seconds, and then you wish you hadn't because they still find it fun long after you're very sick of it? If you're like me, in that situation, I try to progressively make the game less fun for the kids, although this rarely works. I think Florence is a bit like that with tourists. I ... read more

Hello everybody! You have no idea how much I wanted it to be windy in Florence so that I could have called this blog "Florence Gale-in-Night", but it just wasn't to be unfortunately. The weather is fine. Hot in fact. But still no internet, so no pictures. We didn't do a lot today, we seem to get very cranky when we arrive at new places...and the fact that the Italian public servants hate me doesn't help...we always get lost, can't work out where we want to go on the bus, or even how to get on the bus, and I get frustrated and decide to walk to the accommodation. This is invariably a BAD decision. Today in particular. Unfortunately, in Venice, the handle you drag the suitcases along with stopped working on Susie's bag, so we ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice September 4th 2007

Hello everybody! We've been married 2 years today! Aren't we fantastic!? Today we went to the island of Murano, where they are famous for making Venetian Glass. It was pretty interesting. They time their demonstrations for when people get off the water busses, so as soon as we alighted there was a guy shuffling us off (like it or not), to a demonstration of a master making a few things. They're really amazing, except in a way it's a bit disappointing because when you see the vases and things in the shops, you imagine some cute old man labouring intesively over one piece for hours, sweating blood due to the stress he's under to produce a piece worthy of being called Venetian glass...the reality is that he's a fat sweaty guy in a shearer's singlet, with ... read more

Hello everybody!!! When I can't think of a desperately funny title for my blog, I write the name of the city three times. You may have noticed. I'm sure you did. Venice is beautiful. The place we're staying in is a fair way out of the city, which probably makes it much cheaper. It's quite nice. There were a few mixups, because we were expecting to get into Venice the day after, so we had to book a 3 bed room in stead of a double room, and the lady didn't speak any english, so we had to assume everything was right, and we are all still in a bit of a state of confusion, but we will survive. One thing I have noticed is that all countries put the apostrophe in a strange place, which ... read more

Hello everybody. This will be a noticeably shorter blog. Today, we got in a taxi at 9:30, then got on a train, then got on another train, then got on another train, had some chips and bikkies, then got on a taxi, then arrived at our accommodation at 11:00 that night. Trains are nice, but I don't ever want to see another one. So I can't really write much about Venice, except to say that, for the 22 minutes I was awake, it seemed quite dark. Hope everybody is well, talk to you all soon Bye bye... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Avignon September 1st 2007

Hello everybody. Much happier today. Sorry for the rant... Anyways, today we went for a walk in the town and saw some pretty things and spent some pretty money. The town was actually the centre of the Holy Roman Empire for a time when the Romans got sick of the Popes so they fled to France and I think there were 6 or 8 French Popes in that time. They built a palace in the meantime (Le Palais De Papes), which is quite spectacular, and to be honest a bit unexpected in the rest of the town. We hadn't been shopping since we got overseas, and Susie's money was burning a hole in her pocket, so we spent the afternoon shopping. Susie bought some cool things and I got some cool things, so we both look ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Avignon August 31st 2007

I said we don't like Avignon, Oh no. ... And we're serious. It's windy and silly. And we're cranky because we had to walk a long way in the wind. I just about got blown off the bridge onto the road in front of a bus. And most of the day was spent on stinky trains getting here. Therefore, there are no photos. Tomorrow will be better. Bye... read more
