outstanding hey cheryl - the updates and pics are great - feels like we are all taking this journey with you - i know that tova has said she is living vicariuosly through you
hope you are enjoying yourself - perhaps as a new occupation you should consider taking up travel brochures!!!
stalactites and stalagmites I love reading your blog but also so jealous! Thought I'd help you with a little thing that helps me remember the difference between stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites hold on tight so they are the one from the ceiling and stalagmites might one day grow up so they are the ones from the ground. Look forward to your next blog.
Melissa
Hey Cheryl ......
Looks like you are having a wonderful time. Man, you are seeing some real interesting sites. I had a friend go to the Taracota Warriors site and he said the same thing ... absolutely unbelievable ... I'm glad you had a chance to see it. Keep posting, I love taking this trip with you !!
Travel safe,
linda
Great Shots Have you considered contract work for Nat Geo or a travel mag? Great photos and descriptions. I check my phone, see you've written something, then run three red lights to get in front of a computer to read your latest entry. The warriors are amazing! Question is why? Any idea? Memorial to fallen warriors? Pieces to the world's largest chess sets? I think the shot of the old guy butchering chickens is great. They are chickens, right? Especially with the corporate towers in the background. Hilarious! The menu shot? Probably quite accurate. Let's hear it for truth in advertising for a change. Have fun! Be Safe! Aloha!
keep those pics coming Hope you realize you're saving me thousands of dollars by sending all these photos and the commentary too. I'll just save your blog and pretend that I've gone to all these places. Wow, what a trip you're having to date, keep up the great blog work, stay safe. We're thinking of you over here (mainly because we're all jealous...). and a Happy thanksgiving to you as well. Bye for now.
Your pal,
Russ
XI'AN THOSE PICS ARE AWESOME!!! GLAD YOUR GETTING AROUND TO SEE ALOT.....WHY YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT STANDING ON A TRAIN FOR 7 HOURS, YOU USED TO DO THAT AT THE BACK ALLEY..LOL MISS YA AND LOVE YA MICH
I agree with Cindy! Hi Cheryl,
I'm loving this process of following your adventures and can't help but agree with Cindy... you ARE brave and fascinating. You're living the life girl! Great pics that give a good sense of space and the awe factor. Want to hear about the food. Bring it on!
awesome! Finally got a chance to get on the laptop to send a quick note to you. The pictures are awesome. Hard to beleive this stuff still exists after all the crap that has gone on in the world. Have you had the old ladies purse surgically removed yet? That line cracked me up and yes it did look insanely jammed with people. At least you could see above it all! It looks like you are having a great time and enjoying it to the max. The adventure justs gets better and better and still so much to see, you may never come back. Let me know and I can sell some of your stuff and send you the cash.
The weather here has been phenomenal , shorts everyday! having lots of fun with Miika and friends. Trip is going fast but as always getting lots done. Enjoy the ride it may be your last chance to have authentic chinese food. Take care and love you.

Wow Very impressive!! Never even heard of this place...hope I get there. You know....the thing that really amazes me the most about all these things...the caves and the carvings and the hanging Monastery is all the work that went into it and how many people must have spent ALL of their time doing this stuff probably whether they wanted to or not and possibly against their own will. I feel kind of bad...even thought they created such beauty it makes their lives seem so un-precious and meaningless....so unfair.......lol.....I'm having and existential moment here!!Sorry!!
BTW you write very well.
hello from Vancouver Hey Cheryl, just wanted to let you know that I am really enjoying your travel log. What a great idea! You put so much work in to it and it is so well done.
I have never been to Beijing but will be going next month so it is great to see your pics and get an idea of what to expect (with less people) ...although I will be in Shanghai for the tail end of the World's Fair......which could be pretty crazy!! Are you heading there?
BTW I have to congratulate you on your spunk.....traveling by your self in areas where it is NOT easy if you do not speak Chinese!! Good for you!! And your determination...trying to see Mao's remains....etc etc etc...!!
I am so lucky ....I will be in China with a Chinese speaking friend when I go!!
Anyway I am off to Tokyo tomorrow
Safe travels
Allan
Crowds Hey Cheryl,
You makes me want to travel..... Would you still not be afraid of crowds if everyone was your height? Ha! You must be quite tall by comparison. Heights? Don't get along well with them. My feet hurt just looking at your pics. I have to agree with your assessment of the stilts. Built for 125 pound grasshoppers that don't leave foot prints or impressions in rice paper (see Kung Fu - episode 2). Glad you made it out safe! Rub a belly for me please. Aloha.....
Hanging Monastery Great photos. I don' know where you find the time to download them every day. I have a few years of memory chips that haven't been downloaded yet.
I would have checked out when they last replaced the stilts and beams holding the hanging monastery up there before venturing out for a stroll. I hope that they are not the original ones from 1500 years ago....
Braver than me Hi Cheryl
Lovely to be following your blog, going to send on to Morag and Laurie if that is ok. When I told them you were travelling, they thought it was going to be Ireland - so that must be next time. I truly believe that there is much more travel for you and you will end up meeting a man abroad and living abroad.
The pictures are stunning, but made me giddy just looking at them, thank you for sharing as this is the only way I would be experiencing it - I hate hieghts. Keep it coming Px
serioulsy Cheryl,
I am now telling everyone I know about how brave and fascinating you are.
Although I have never had the urge to travel to the Yungang Caves - I do now.
I will live through you until I gainthe courage to quit my job and tackle the world!
love, CJ
Hey Cheryl Hi Cheryl...sounds like your having a wonderful time. I feel like I'm getting a geography/history lesson from your posts, so keep em coming.
Miss ya...be safe.
很高兴收到你的来信 - (Good to hear from you) Hey Cheryl, This is very cool! I was just saying how great a time we live in where you can be on the other side of the world and even on a different day and we can communicate (almost) in real time. Great photos and descriptions. I thought Honolulu got crowded. Are you sure it was mammasan's purse? You know, being a good looking haole girl and all. Was I the only one that suggested proof of your being there would be nice? HA! Read your comment and thought that might be for me. If so, thanks! I feel like I made the blog. Can't recall if you spoke of the weather. By the way folks are dressed it seems mild. Is it humid? Does it compare with other places you've been? One other thing I'd like to know is, is the air fresh? I'm sure it depends on where you are but generally speaking what's the air quality like? Are you finding it difficult to eat? That would be my biggest problem. I'd have to train at home to eat lots of fish so I could survive. A friend of mine who I was bragging to about you told me to tell you not to pass up spending time in the country. Says it's amazing and the people are the best. Hope you get the chance to explore that too. Donna is in Calgary for two weeks (guess you know that and hope you hear from her). She surprized Miika at school and he was very excited. Love that little guy. Wow! Amanda has a new truck?! That is one charmed gal. Felicia and I are holding the course here in HNL and things are good. Any chance of swinging through on your way home? If you send me an address as to where you'll be and when I'll send you a care package of anything you need. Take care and I'll read about things next time.
Alohas!
Mitch

God bless the guts you have to tackle this type of travel, hardly serenity now!

So what is your overall impression of China so far. Do you like it? The crowds would be tough for me I think. I like the artsy shots you posted...a real travel blogger in the making! Have you met any foreigners over there yet? Where do you go next? I'm glad you are having a good time Cheryl. As for me, I have been paranoid about some bites I have on my hands so I will see a dermatologist this week if possible to see what they are. Darrell and I went to see The Town. It got 95% on rotten tomatoes and deserved it. It was really good. Okay better run. The bus driver has been coming much earlier and I have missed the bus three times. I leave the house around 8 am now...Bye for now, Robs
Glad you are having fun I am glad that you are having fun and seeing a lot of neat things. You have the time to do all things that you want to see. Just keep you head up and everything will be fine. Pictures are really good , the weather looks great not like here at home. Miiki say hi to you and have a great holiday.
Thake care
Shirley
