Penguins. What is there to say about them? They are cute and they are fluffy and they swim and according Warner Brothers they sing and dance. Now as much as I enjoyed Happy Feet that's not quite what they are all about. I think one word can sum them up. And that word is "guano". As soon as you approach a colony you smell it. It's rank like rotten fish and half the time they look like they've been doing their best to get as much of it on themselves as is penguinly possible. Then they don't look so cute. And I definitely wouldn't want to pick one up and take it home. But they DO have their cute sides. if they've just been swimming and haven't been near the guano yet they are clean. And ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica February 28th 2011

So on teh 28th, after another rough weather morning with no landings we finally got to make a landing / go kayaking in the afternoon. This was pretty exciting for everyone! Although it wasn't "continental" Antarctica and was just an island it was still the first time we were setting foot on Antarctic soil / rock / snow / whatever - we weren't really sure. The location for this momentous event was Petermann Island. So again we kitted up in thermals and dry suit and this time we were allowed to actually get in our kayaks. It was kinda weird seeing all my friends leave and head over at a much faster pace than me to the island. They were getting there faster, they were taking their good cameras, they didn't have to do any work ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica February 27th 2011

So the morning of the 27th dawned with two exciting expectations: 1. Crossing the Antarctic Circle and 2. Our first landing at Detaille Island. This was the day(s) we'd all been waiting for. Originally most of us expected to be going to the South Shetland Islands first and doing the Antarctic Circle crossing right at the end of our trip as that's what the trip detail stated. I don't think anyone was disappointed that we were doing things "backwards". It was never confirmed exactly why we did it backwards, but I think it was because our ship had made a commitment to collect some personell who had spent 5 weeks restoring an old research station on Detaille Island. Since we also had to drop most of them off at Port Lock Roy later in our trip ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia February 24th 2011

So we overnighted in Ushuaia and woke late for our last day here. We had until 4 pm to get everything done that we needed to do and we had an abundance of time for that since we needed to be checked out at 10. We were slightly concerned because our instructions were to leave our bags at reception and they would make in onto the expedition and be waiting for us no worries. But since this wasn't the normal hotel would that work? Just in case I haven't mentioned it up until now, my friends from the first part of this great big tour were: Sara and Ried - 28 / 29 yo Radiologists from the Gold Coast (NOT a couple); Lillian - a 34 yo writer from Adelaide; Stephanie - a 26 yo from ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Puerto Natales February 23rd 2011

From Puerto Natales to Ushuaia. What is there to say? It wasn't a pleasant day. The bus seats were fine for most of the day BUT it was a long day and to make life more interesting I was not feeling well. I had a slight tummy bug... nothing too bad but since my antibiotics were under the buse there wasn't anything I could do about it! The day consisted of bus to a random intersection in the middle of nowhere to be picked up by another bus. I was kinda happy with getting off that first bus though cos the... conductor or "hostie" or whatever was this deaf guy who kept using basic signing to tell me I was pretty and that he earns lots of money and that we should get married and have ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine February 20th 2011

I tried to think of something cute and funny to name this entry (I know - it would be the first time) but there is really nothing else I could possibly call it! It's gonna be about Torres del Paine and anyone who has ever been there, wants to go there or otherwise knows about it, those words sum up so much! It is just a spectacular National Park! Dominated by the three horns (middle, north and west I think - I really should go check) the stark beauty is apparent straight away. Until now I hadn't really commented on the weather, which to be fair is a bit of an injustice to the weather. Patagonia weather is typically windy, windy, windy, rainy and cold. I'm very happy to report that we had ONE day of ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate February 18th 2011

Wow, just looking at this now and I'm way behind. I guess that's what happens when I'm having so much fun. Anyways... I guess I should mention my day spent in El Calafate checking out Perito Moreno Glacier (I think the fact that I keep thinking of it as Perito MERINO says something about my Aussie-ness). This was a much more sedate day in comparison to my full day. The hike wasn't a hike. It was a walk. But before we went for the walk we went for a nice little boat ride. 50 pesos for 1.5 hours to go look at the glacier up close and hopefully see some calvings etc. I wasn't going to pay the moeny since I didn't have it, but Albert knew I wanted to and so he paid for me. ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Chaltén February 16th 2011

The second day of the group tour saw us travelling to El Calafate and then onto El Chalten for a couple of days. The third day we went on one hell of a long hike. Although, since my new shoes (did I mention that I had shit shoes and needed to buy some new ones) were giving me hell so I didn't get to go all the way to the top. Instead I skipped the part of the hike that saw the group going to the top of the trail to see the best views of Fitz Roy and the lakes nearby. That cut my hike down to "only 6 hours and 30 minutes. But I then wandered around town and bought ANOTHER pair of hiking shoes, got some souvenirs, put some washing in and booked ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia February 15th 2011

The drive from my hotel in Buenos Aires I saw lots of dogs... not quite sure what I was expecting but I definitely wasn't expecting so many dogs. There was one lady who was walking about 6 dogs all at the same time. It was a long wait at the airport since I got there around 10:20 and my flight wasn't until 13:00 but that was fine. I just sat and read and drank my first cerveza of the trip. I guess I kinda cheated though I got Stella since I knew I'd like it. Only $5 for Stella and that was airport prices. Not too bad I don't think. Stupidly I chose not to eat since I thought they'd give us something on the plane. But I don't think you could really call what they ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney February 13th 2011

So nothing of note happened in Sydney (thankfully) and I was up early the following morning to catch the plane to Santiago. It was one of those long flights that take 4 hours to get to Auckland and then stops for 2 hours for us to all get out, walk around and get back on. Followed by 11 hours going to Santiago. All I can say is OUCH. Big flight. Result is a very tired girl. I was very happy when I got my boarding pass. 12C Aisle seat. Right behind business class so that means extra leg room. I get on and there is some woman sitting in my seat. She'd been assigned at 12E (NOT and aisle seat) and her husband had been assigned 12A... since they had a new born they really wanted ... read more
