The ride out of Remington started nicely, but soon the clouds overhead let go with a vengeance. After only a couple of miles I realized that my gore-tex jacket was in serious need of some revitalizing spray, because the rain quickly soaked through it. And my shoes, which had been soaked the night before, kept my feet sloshing about in a bath. I stopped at a small Civil War battleground along the way and read the congregation of historical markers. According to some markers, it was the only battle in which Stonewall Jackson unsheathed his sword, while another marker claimed that [View Full Entry]

I can see my breath in the glow of my Palm Pilot screen. Above me the high-tension power lines are humming and the stars are gleaming. Soon the waning moon should rise. I’ve been talking about the School of the Americas for almost four years now, and I’ve contacted Quakers all along my route, letting them know when I’ll be coming through town. I’ve been promising my friends and family for months now that I [View Full Entry]

Prequel to a Journey

Greetings Friends- A couple of years ago I found myself standing on a smoggy street corner during a peace vigil & discussing transportation options to Ft. Benning for the annual School of the Americas vigil with a likeminded friend. We lamented the fact that our witness for peace in Columbus, Georgia was somewhat negated by our use of petroleum & automobiles to travel the 500+ miles. While we stood in opposition to violence in the service of capitalism throughout Latin America, we did so by transporting ourselves on tens of gallons of gasoline extracted with methods that were all too often [View Full Entry]
